Recruiting Dead Period

Post by Salsa »

I believe a recruiting dead period begins 12/19 and extends into the early part of January. During this period, coaches cannot visit or contact prospective recruits.

So, we may not hear much recruiting news for several weeks. I'm guessing that we have received some verbals that have not been made public.

Here's a list of the verbals that I can remember.

Pronty WR
Corner RB
Riecke TE
Brighton DB
Smith DE
Culberson-Fehling DT
Sheehan QB
Donahue OL
Fells LB
Mahone S
Jackson LB

That adds up to 11. Have I missed anyone?

Some other names are Mark Krauss, Marcus Hyde, Edner Alcin, Ian Conyers, Shawn Bernaky. Rivals and Scout Insiders list 5-10 or so more that they say we have offerred.

Don't you think that the coaches have already offerred grants to those they hope to fill out the class?

We already have 4 verbals from defensive linemen or linebackers. I'm betting though that the coaches hope to sign some more at these positions.

Other priorities are probably receivers and kickers.

We've had good luck coming up with late verbals. Examples from last year are Antonio Smith and Kenny Lewis.

If we can get a handful more good ones like this week's Fells, Mahone, and Jackson, this year's class might end up being Brandon's best yet.

By the way, does anyone know if Lovett wants definitely to change to a 3-4 defense?

Let's hope we get some more news before the dead period kicks in.

This Culberson-Fehling kid I hope becomes something other than a DT, cuz if scout is in any way close to being acurtate about his size than yikes. They say he's 6'3 and 215lb. Come on!

Does somebody else want to take this one?

I actually did not realize that there was a dead-period in December. I guess I was under the impression that the dead-period began in late January? Estoy muy confudado...

Dead period runs from 12/19/2005 to 01/01/2006. We have some visits set this weekend, I do believe. SOme of those kids may commit before they leave and then go home and blab about it to the hometown paper.

Here's the NCAA recruiting schedule for all sports...

The kid is 6'3. Assuming he has a fairly large frame (safe assumption), they could redshirt him and put 50lbs on him.

Well if his 40 time is accurate as well than theres no place for a player of that speed than on DT , but if 65-70lbs can be put on a player then okay.

Don't roll your eyes at me! 99% of those reported 40 times are b.s. Also, I don't see why the kid has to be 280 - 285 lbs. There are plenty of very good D-1A defensive linemen who are smaller than that.

Yes there are.

However there are very few good rushing defenses that are built entirely upon undersized DL as we seem to constantly build on. I have no problem with some undersized kids on the DL, but it gets rather old to watch us constantly bring in nothing but 220 pound kids (to bulk up to DT), then wonder why our rush defense sucks.

Brighton DB
I didn't see a thread anywhere specifically that was dedicated to Derek, so I thought I'd include the little snippet on Derek Brighton that I ran across today in this thread.

http://www.thenewsherald.com/stories/12 ... 1010.shtml

Derek Brighton, Allen Park: The brother of former All-Downriver Allen Park star, Bryan Brighton, Derek became a star in his own right. His was one of those talented Allen Park players who would line up almost anywhere on offense and make plays when he got the ball. He rushed for nearly 700 yards and averaged more than eight yards a carry. He caught passes for 400 more yards. As a defensive back, he was a lock-down cornerback, who freed up the rest of the Allen Park defenders to make plays. His loss to injury was one of the big reasons Anderson was able to upset the Jags in the second round of this year's state playoffs. A 3.5 GPA student, Brighton will play football at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
