Falcons 3 Massachusetts 2
The Falcons by some accounts had a good win tonight. If anyone has details please contribute.
If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back now and then to make sure it's still there.

I am waiting for Bleeding Orange to post a detailed report, even though I talked with him during the game. Also, Freddie, BGBill, I know you are all there.....Come on....give us your first hand accounts!!!FalconBlue wrote:The Falcons by some accounts had a good win tonight. "Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

UMASS is 5-11 and we were outshot 42-17...I don't know about a good win but a win nonetheless. The four teams in this tourney entered last night with a combined record of 20-37-5 and we are the highest scoring team in the tournament averaging 3.47 goals per game. UCONN has the worst home record of the 4 teams. This tourney can be won by us for sure!
Again, John Horrell stands on his head for us. Johnathan Matsumoto had 2 goals, Bryan Dobek had the other. A win is a win, way to go Falcons!! Bring home the trophy! By the way, did anybody see Michigan get their butts handed to them by Colorado College at the GLI last night. It just shows how far ahead of the CCHA the WCHA is. And Michigan State had to go to overtime to beat Michigan Tech.

As much as I like to see the CCHA win, I was just giddy when I saw the weasels lost 6-1!!falcons86 wrote:By the way, did anybody see Michigan get their butts handed to them by Colorado College at the GLI last night. FWIW, I don't think that score shows that the WCHA is that far ahead of the CCHA. Michigan is #6 and CC is #7 in the country. CC took total advantage of the fact the weasels had a very depleted lineup, with one player out for a game suspension (fighting), and several of their top guys playing in the World Junior Tournament (both Team USA and Team Canada, I believe). CC had no players in the World Juniors. Regarding Michigan State, they have been inconsistent since Comley took over. Who knows what they do on any given night.
GOOD LUCK FALCONS!!
BRING HOME THE UCONN TOURNEY TROPHY!!!!

Reversing the trend
As I've seen many around here note before, this team seems to play a couple of strong periods and fall off of the map in the third. Well, tonight they did just the opposite. They looked terrible in the first period, and as I told Falcon Fanatic early on, we were getting absolutely physically manhandled by UMass. Not in a bad way - indeed, there were no penalties in the first - but UMass was simply taking the puck and lifting sticks at will, and they were forechecking much, much better. UMass also plays the absolute best transitional neutral zone trap I have ever seen in my life. We could hardly get the puck into the offensive zone in the first because of it. But, after falling down 1-0, a late goal in the first (I think by Matsumoto, not sure though) kind of gave the team a it more confidence, I thought.
We came out with guns blazing in the second putting all kinds of pressure on Quick, and two goals later we were up for good. Their second goal (the shorty) was absolute junk, though, and was pretty damn embarassing. Our blueliners need to pull it together quick or we are going to lose a lot more than we should the rest of the year. There is absolutely no excuse for defensemen getting beat at the blueline while playing catch on a powerplay. None. That being said, I was pretty impressed with UMass, though. They are a lightning quick team that could benefit from better puck control.
And whoever said that Horrell stood on his head for us last night was absolutely correct. Granted, the vast majority of UMass' 42 shots were prayers from the perimiter (it looked as if their gameplan was to simply pepper Horrell), but he made more than a handful of spectacular saves including about four in ten seconds late in the third flat on his back. The kid is ridiculous and doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves.
Here's to hoping we bring home the hardware tongiht! Well, I'm not sure if we get hardware or not, but a win is a win! GO FALCONS!!!

Having not seen this exact game I can't comment on the lopsided shot count, but being outshot is not always a bad thing.cowboyjoe wrote:UMASS is 5-11 and we were outshot 42-17...I don't know about a good win but a win nonetheless. A couple of weeks ago I attended a game where the home team was outshot more than 2:1 (I think final shots were 43-19) but they won 3-2. At first glance the shot totals were a little alarming, but anyone who was at the game would tell you that legitimate scoring chances were equal: roughly 75% of the shots taken by the road team were unscreened shots from the blueline, and the goaltender handled them easily. Low percentage shots, in other words. On the other hand, roughly 85% of the shots taken by the home team were within 15' of the net and were quality chances (ie-- not directly into the goalie's chest).
Again, having not been at this exact game I cannot comment, but if this case was similar to the one I described above, it may not be so worrysome. In the game I saw, it seemed as if the home team was thinking, "You can take 100 shots from the blueline if you want, we know our goalie will stop them. But if we take shots, we'll do it from close range."

Andy mentioned at the end of the 2nd period that the shots didn't sound quite right...they must not have the quality stats crew as BG does.
