REPORT CARD

Post by PhalconFan »

As the conference season starts here is my report card so far on the team.

Player Grade opinion

Brain Moten C Good Start, might have problems with grades next year

Darryl Clements D Too many turnovers( 6 assists 18 TO). Will not be back next year

Alvin Freeman C Not a team player. Will not be back next year

John Floyd C- 10 games in and still not in shape. Needs to learn to shoot (34%) Will be back up PG

Dusan Radivojevic C No defense needs to learn how to pass. Very Weak

Brian Guerin B- Looked good but got sick. Has best handles and can shoot. Needs to regain weight

Martin Samarco B+ Good shooter, rebounder needs to have less turnovers

Eric Marschatll B Needs to pass more, good shot needs to stay out of foul trouble

Steven Wright B+ Getting better every week. Shots a little bit too much

Matt Lefeld B Was D- but really has stepped up. Needs to stay out of foul trouble

Patrick Phillips C+ A lot of missed games last 2 years. Plays soft but takes care of the ball.

Perrick Robinson C Great on defense. Needs to work on shot. Doesn’t see the whole floor yet

Mawel Soler B Good over all game except 28 TO. Needs to control his temper

These are my observations. I think we will do better this year than most people think. We need to play more team ball and break the defense down with inside/out play or dribble penetration.

Welcome PhalconFan, that being said, I actually wonder how many of the games you've been to or what type of agenda you personally are attempting to carry out as your observations are as slanted as Farenheit 911 in very obvious parts.

Moten = C? What? I would give Brian an Incomplete. He has played in two three games, with any real minutes coming in what 1 or 2 of them at most and against a NAIA school. What I have observed is Moten is in love with his own shot and it will be very interesting watching Moten, Samarco and Wright play with 1 ball from here on out. All 3 on the court at the same time is a dangerous proposition for our offense. Also, I am eager to know how you have found Moten's class schedule considering he's only signed up for Sping classes thus far.

Clements= D? Were you in Virginia, when Clements logged his only significant minutes of the year? He has barely seen the floor in a non-garbage time role since. I would love to see your analysis of why Darryl won't be back next year as well.

Alvin Freeman= C? Again, when have you seen him play. Alvin is decently athletic and the star student on the team as a walk-on. Seeing as how his education is paid for and the athletic department doesn't have to spend a dime, I'll go out on a limb and say Freeman comes back next year. Wow!

John Floyd= C? We won't play another guard this year that he can guard and we may not have played one yet. However, how any Dan Dakich coached athlete is not in shape is beyond me. There's a difference between not being in shape and just being slow. Floyd is just slow, but a hard worker nonetheless. We could sign Wayne Ellington and/or OJ Mayo and John Floyd would still be our starting point guard. Mayo is a junior, I know, but you get my point. Dakich loves Floyd, Floyd loves Dakich. Trust me, as much as we don't like it, we have it for another year.

Dusan= C. You're exactly right, he plays no defense. I want you to show me anyone on this team that does . . . on a consistent basis. We do at times, but we haven't for 40 minutes yet. I would also like to know what European has ever played defense? I'm more concerned with Dusan shrinking 4 inches since he arrived than his lack of defense or his strength, or passing ability.

Guerin= B-? Did you watch the ND game? Guerin looked legitimately lost running the show and had to be scolded by Pat Phillips of all people to know which way the offense ran. His handles are suspect at best and he has average to below average quickness and defensive awareness from the limited action I saw.

Samarco= B+, ok maybe. No one loves their own shot more than Samarco. We needed his "leadership" early on, my question is when does it become a distraction? Samarco plays defense, most of the time. I'm not as sold on him as a lot of others are, but the potential is there to be a very solid contributor. It's a shame we only have him for another season.

Marschall= B. Foul prone due to being undersized. I refuse to buy this "plays bigger than what he is" crap. He's a solid 6'7" probably not much taller and is no where near the 235 he's listed at. I'm guessing he's a lot closer to 215-220. Marco Killingsworth (IU) has a lot more than 20-25 pounds on Marschall. On the upside, he has a nice mid-range game and solid handles for a "bigger" guy, but he's not all THAT big.

Wright= B+? I don't see it. Granted the jury is out on Steve. He has battled the foot injury all season.

Lefeld= B. I was the biggest critic of Lefeld's recruitment and his freshman year. I'll admit it. I don't know if I've seen another kid bust his ass to improve as much as Matt has in the three years he's been here. Matt's only problem, at no fault of his own, is growing into those size 18 boats. He has vastly improved his body shape and game since HS and early college. Matt's development is key to our success, but his guards have to step up and offer help as well.

Pat Phillips= C+? Pat is a hard worker.

Moon= C. I would grade him higher, myself. Easily the better point guard so far. Will never see the minutes he deserves b/c of the John Floyd love fest. Solid on defense, no shot at all and decent handles.

Mawi= B? This I don't see at all. His FG% is high, but he has attempted what 5 shots that weren't follow-ups, layups or dunks all year? Mawi is ok on defense and improving as a rebounder. He's exactly what I expected a mid-major Juco to be.

That being said, given your grades, how do you expect us to be better that what most people think? I don't get it. Please enlighten us to your observations.

I'm not sure how much sense it makes to try to assign letter grades to players, especially when you have so many freshman. I agree whole heartedly that we'll be better than most observers currently expect.

What makes you think that Moten will have trouble with grades year?!?!?!?

Marschall is currently a leading candidate for MAC FOTY, although it's early and a lot can happen. He's extremely eager, and there are clearly some things that need polish. However, where your "B" comes from, I would have no idea.

You're dead wrong on Dusan's passing. Passing and shooting are the two things that he does well. Also, I don't think he's "very weak". It was obvious from the ND game that he has some things to learn on D.

It's hard to say whether or not a kid will return next year without know the kid himself. Clements is lightening quick in both half-court and transition situations and has good handles. His quickness makes him very capable defensively. Unfortunately, he has the ugliest shot since Joe Moore, and at 6-4, that's a problem for him. Moten, Wright, and Samarco are ahead of him in the perimeter rotation. Next year, with the availability of Larson, Sullivan, and another player to be named later, Marschall might shift from the 4 to the 3, which could squeeze his minutes further. Clements needs to improve his scoring abilities to compete for PT.

Given our severe depth and foulling problems along the front line, I'm surprised DD hasn't rotated Freeman in at the 4 spot for 5 minutes per game.

Phillips had 2 very impressive moves to the basket against ND.

I saw Guerin in the Fall scrimmage and thought that he looked better than Floyd and Robinson. OptionQB, if a freshmen PG misses an entire month early in the year due to mono, wouldn't you EXPECT him to look lost running the offense, especially when most of the other players on the floor see little playing time as well? How is that even a remotely useful criticism?

OptionQB, I liked your Floyd love-fest comment. DD had the same thing with Eyink and Cory Ryan, and the result was that other players didn't get the PT that they deserved. Interestingly, Floyd only had 10 minutes against ND despite starting.

Why comment on Michael Moore's view of the team. This thread adds little value. Sorry maybe his next topic will.

He lost me at Dusan.

I've not really developed a lovefest for Dusan, but in what I've seen he looks like the best passer on the team. That isn't saying much, but if he needs to work on his passing I'd like to see you mention something about the PGs that couldn't throw a basketball through a garage door from 10 feet away.
