That is unfortunate. That roof is one of the ugliest things on campus, just short of the penis rock over by the seal (Done't even get me started on that thing). The roof is the key to our poor acoustics, and all of the leaks we have. But then again the buckets and tarps would blend right in if they were only painted grey like the walls  Without wrapping the entire sheet of ice in seats I don't see how we will be able to maintain 5000 seats with any kind of boxes or suites. Without moving the roof I would recommend building a new "mail" sheet of ice behind the existing building and making the current sheet a secondary sheet. That will maintain the structural integrity of the existing building and a new building would give us some of the imporvements we need.

You know what I love about you?
Every single time penis rock is mentioned, you say 'Don't get me started on that thing!' :)

I really need to trek back there to see what all the uproar is about.

The Freddie Plan
FULL BLOWN PIPE DREAM...Plan C

Brand new multi-purpose convocation center on the site of the present tennis complex, possibly spilling over on to some of the intermural field. New building connects to existing ice arena, and ought to be designed to hold 6500 for hockey, 7000 for bouncyball, 8500 for concerts, etc (including floor seating). Gut the inside of the existing arena, including all existing seating, and extend the west wall about 20 feet (to the edge of the parking lot). Replace the existing ice surface (which runs north-south) with TWO sheets (running east-west). Two full sheets of ice would then be available ALL the time...great news for the community, youth leagues and a true revenue producer. The 'main arena' ice would be covered up with the basketball floor most of the time, only being un-covered for games.
Cost $55-65m, but it enhances lots of sports, and would become a major asset to the entire community.

Does BG have a Ralph Englested?

I like Freddie's ideas. Especially Option "C".
A main convocation Center with Hockey and Bouncyball, and 2
additional ice sheets. This would make Bowling Green and BGSU a
national center of hockey and figure skating again.

Yesterday I was walking through the Hartford Airport, I saw many teenage girls with hockey sticks. While we were playing at the U. Conn Tournament
( which we won) there was a girls hockey tournament in Hartford.
There were 200 teams, 3500 girls/young ladies, probably a like number of parents. Can you say $$$$ ? I met a family from Minneapolis, the daughter plays for Team Colorado on the weekends.

Can BG put on an event like this? Why not?
Last year Coach Fogarty established the "First Contact Camp" for potential
D - I hockey players. In it's first year this was a national event. In the years to come Ron will grow this in to a major national event.

Can we justify the Freddie plan. Yes we can. Would this help with hockey recruiting, yes it would. In 1984 Bowling Green was the center of the
skating world. NCAA champions, HS State Champions and Scott Hamilton won the Gold Medal .

I would not be opposed to "The 5/3 Arena At BGSU".

I'm not sold on the idea of having the ice sheet games are played on underneath the basektball floor. The ice is much crappier that way (at least, that's the case at Gund Arena, or whatever it's called now).

Since we're pipe-dreaming it anyway, give bouncyball their own wing of the new convocation center and let the ice breathe.

I am a fan of at least two sheets of ice. In addition to giving everyone and their little sister ice time, I think we'd be better equipped to serve the needs of the figure skaters vs. the hockey players. Ideal hockey ice is much thinner than ideal figure skating ice. I think it would be a great idea to keep one sheet more in tune with hockey needs and one sheet more in tune with figure skating needs rather than trying to split the difference and keeping the ice at a thickness that's not quite right for anybody's purposes.

Puckhead - first of all, it was great meeting you last week at the tourney. I hope you had a great time with your family!

Second, I can tell you for a fact that BGSU will never build a combined hockey/basketball facility similar to the Schott, at least as long as Paul Krebs is here. Paul was an Asst. AD at OSU when the planning/fundraising phases of putting up the Schott were going on and he witnessed firsthand all of the cost over-runs and excessive operational costs associated with this type of a facility. To this day the Schott is still hemoraging cash. I just thought I would throw this out there because it seems to me that this type of conversation is a bit of a dead-end without knowing the realities of having this type of a facility. While two new/renovated facilities may cost slightly more in the short-term, it would actually save money in the long-term.

When I first submitted my rant about the Ice Arena there were 2 topics:
1) Will improvements to the arena help the hockey program, help recruiting?

2) Has the Administration failed to support the team for the last decade? Has this caused the hockey program to decline?

We have discussed whether a new arena or a renovated arena will help the program.
Now let us discuss whether the Administration (Dr. Ribeau )
has failed to support the program for the last 10 years.
People have said that he is a big backer of BG Hockey.
I'm not sure if I have seen this. What do you think?
I think that it is time that the Administration made a Major commitment to the prgram.

To be honest, the administration hasn't made a big committment to any program.

I guess I'm going to disagree. Looking at our facilities, I can't honestly see where the administration has really put much backing into our football program.

A trend which seems to be breaking with the construction of the Sebo center. Perhaps the administration is starting to realize that athletics can help further a schools reputation with prospective students.
