I forgot to post this link earlier, but here's a lot of info and thoughts on this recruit.

Bobby Thomas was recruited to play DB and he wound up back at RB, maybe Brown will wind up in the same situation. (Macon never played defense either)
People are making a lot out of losing PJ and BJ. I'm not that concerned about our backfield next year. PJ was hurt most of the year and BJ was a good second back, but I never thought of him as a feature guy.
I think Macon and Thomas will more than equal what we got from the position last year. When you factor in talented RS freshman Chris Bullock and possibly Brown (or even Mahone) I think we look pretty solid.

From the whole recruiting conversation, I get the feeling Brown came here because we told him he could be a RB. Kind of like how we got J5.
I'm very intrigued about this recruiting class as a whole. We finally seem to be winning some of these battles for 3-star recruits from bigger schools. I'd be willing to bet the beginning of SEBO construction has a good deal to do with the recruiting success.

ESPN recruit tracker on Jahmal Brown
From ESPN's recruit tracker...
Brown is a hardnosed, tough runner with great balance and a low center of gravity. He reminds us of former Syracuse running back James Mungro, only not as fast. He is low to the ground and shows excellence patience and vision to and through the hole. He is shifty and always keeps his legs churning and pumping. Breaks a lot of tackles and is tough to get a beat on. Looks like he is not moving very fast, but he is deceptive. He has decent elusiveness and good hip flexibility which allows him to move laterally very well to avoid tacklers. He has good hands and is an adequate receiver out of the backfield. The problem with Brown is that he lacks great speed and make you miss ability. He will come up with big runs and chunks of yardage where he breaks a lot of tackles and gain extra yards, but he is not going to be an explosive guy that is a threat to go the distance everytime he touches it. He is a solid competitor and good runner that is tough to bring down.

Brown sounds like the kind of running back I like. Tough, elusive, and hard to bring down. His lack of breakaway speed is something we can work with. There bave been a lot of great running backs who carried that label and did just fine. Chester Taylor (Toledo) and Michael Turner (Northern Illinois) both lack break away speed but are in the NFL and doing well. I don't recall Emmit Smith having great speed but he was one great football player. Also, Cleveland Benedictine has a great program and they play a very tough schedule.

I would bet not one recruit has come in here and said that Sebo center sounds sweet I am going to BG. I would also bet not one recruit we lost said I would have went to Bg but the Sebo Center wasnt ready yet.Jacobs4Heisman wrote:From the whole recruiting conversation, I get the feeling Brown came here because we told him he could be a RB. This is my favorite time of year. The time of year when we all swoon over the Virgil Robinsons and the Reggie Harwells and are so happy about the new recruits and when optimism is renewed. Lets hope Luke Alaxander a good next season and laud the coaching staff for getting him here.

Yes we have. And when we are done with the SEBO, we still won't have then best facility in the MAC and we can't just stop with that upgrade. Facilities and recruiting go hand-in-hand....they are the bloodlines of your prgram and you can never stop seeking the best in either. You are never done in either and if you slow down in either area, you will get passed by other schools.Flipper wrote:We HAVE lost recruits in the past because our facilities were lagging compared to other MAC schools.

Anyone else remember 14 years ago when all we heard was "once we build the field house and have an indoor practice facility we are going to land some great recruits"
This is an on going thing, trying to keep up with the Joneses and get something shiny and new on campus to entice the 17 and 18 year olds to come here. . .

RWT: I read that as we got J5 because we told him he could play QB, so maybe we got Brown because we told him he could play RB.Redwingtom wrote:You're not saying that we told J5 he could be a RB are you? 87's right -- we got J5 because we said he could play the position he wanted to (QB). I get the feeling Brown will be here because we said he could be a RB, while bigger schools wanted him to be an safety or something like that.Redwingtom wrote:You're not saying that we told J5 he could be a RB are you?
