If you stay in the #1 spot, I agree with you. However, trading out of a spot is not the same as passing on them. The NFL draft is about value. It doesn't matter if I go into the draft with my scouting reports and I think that player X is the best player in the draft for my team. If player X is rated as a 2nd rounder by the rest of the league you don't take him in the top 5.
If what you heard is true, and the Texans are giving Carr the bonus they will nto be taking Leinart or Young. That still doesn't mean that they will be taking Bush, but I would be shocked if they didn't. I still think some teams will be willing to pay top compensation to move into that spot. If I'm Texas I would be listening to all offers. The Lions snagged the #37 pick in the draft a couple years ago to drop down 1 spot. If the Texans could get a high 2nd rounder, or a future first rounder, to drop down a couple spots and still snag D'Brickashaw Ferguson, that's value.
You certainly cannot take D'Brick #1 overall, because it's poor value. The rest of the league will be slobbering over Bush, and he is a cannot miss talent, but that doesn't mean you have to take him. It's quite fine to trade out of a pick if you get value for your pick. I still wish the Browns would've taken Ditka up on that offer in '99 to trade his entire draft plus the 1st rounder next year for the right to choose Ricky Williams.
I don't get the love fest with Lendale White. He's got some power, but he's a full 2 yards per carry worse than Reggie throughout the season and doesn't offer that versatility. I think Lendale is a first round talent if you want a straight ahead power back, but it seems cliche to say that he'll have a better career than Bush. Personally I don't think White is any better than than the 3rd or 4th best RB in the draft. I rate Bush & DeAngelo Williams ahead of White for sure, and possibly Maroney as well. Of all the guys in the draft Williams is the one that it wouldn't shock me if he ended up better than Bush. That guy reminds me of LaDanian Tomlinson so much it's scary.
In the end it's a pretty good draft to have the #1 pick, it will be tough for the Texans to screw this up. If they take Vince or Bush they have a potential superstar. If they trade down they should be able to rape somebody for picks, and still come away with a pretty good player in return this year as well. If I were them I don't think I'd drop out of the top 5 though.
