Reliving their YOUTH??? Are you serious??? Give me a break! This was not a bunch of us old farts trying to relive our youth, it was trying to show current students how awesome this rink used to be when we had it full and we all cheered in unison!! As YOU said the key is showing them our own past, which is what we did. I think you are taking the stuff about section E a little pesonal, and it's definitely not meant that way. As Flag City Falcon said, the crap that has been coming out of section E for the last few years is nothing but a clone of the garbage the the Weasels spout, just to a lesser scale. We want the rowdy fans, but we want some unity and strength in numbers when it comes to what we yell. That builds a tremendous atmosphere and makes it fun for everyone. Right now this team is in the verge of a HUGE breakthrough, the kind of breakthrough that we have been waiting patiently (ok, some not so patiently) for years now. NOW is time to get the students on board. Now is the time to show them what CAN be done. No one is saying it HAS to be exactly the same as it was, just showing them the where the traditions came from and how embraced they were. The evolution of the fan support and what is yelled will probably take a life of its own, as these things tend to do, but it sure doesn't hurt to take a step back, reflect a little and learn from the past AS WE MOVE FORWARD. "Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. I certainly don't want the students to relive my BG years - we had cheerleaders back then.
What I'm looking for is kind of like a huge card section, 'cept instead of cards they hold up their laptops- OK, maybe PDA's, and somehow Jordan Sigalet is involved, emailing to each one colors and stuff, and nasty messages are flashed.
We have the technology, yes?
All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.
I think we need to draw a few lines here, at the very least. First, even if I haven't even physically sat in Section E for more than two years, I don't think we need to be tearing folks down, however bad they may have gotten. I'm not defending the over-the-top vulgarity, its part of why I haven't gone back there. Nor am I going to go so far as saying that stamping it out, by communicating or force, isn't possible or desirable.
However I think folks must understand the mindset of the kids they are talking about, and reconcile themselves to no being able to get every single thing they want back.
I think attaching "sucks" to every last thing is unoriginal, a bit annoying. But vetting the word from everything the students ever say, isn't going to happen.
FF: What is amusing is that all but two of us know each other by name, but here, we read like a bunch of superheros and villians confronting each other. So long as we don't see either your husband or I in tights, I can deal with that.
But let me make it clear, I'm not calling anybody "an old fart." That wasn't what I was saying specifically. I was telling you how the students, when I was sitting down there, saw some of you coming down to lecture them on cheers. I'm not defending it, I'm not comments about the current Sec. E personally (because I've long since parted from it.) I'm simply trying to help by providing some insight into the same kids your trying to motivate.
I'm all for what Coach, you, and others are trying to do. I just think it stands a better chance of working if the efforts keep in mind how the people we are working with think.
I'll add a point I made in another thread, about a totally different topic. I do take a harder line in some debates because it has a desired effect. I'm not taking talk of Section E personally. Though I dislike specific way talking of some kids who sit in Section E, makes it seem like they are the same group I was part of, or that we are responsible for where those kids have gone with things. I think identifying them as "Section E" only gives them a unity they don't have, and a respect they don't deserve. I want to be able to talk about "Section E" and not have it compared, or linked to the small group that is still there. (Not speaking about or in terms of I assume Terry and the locals still sit)
When you tell kids about how things where, what was done, etc, it must be borne in mind that it comes across like people expecting them to replicate the exact same thing. The message can be lost if that is how its seen, and I'm not saying that it is, only that this is a risk.
What we need are recent grads that seem "Plausibly Colligate" to mix with our beloved students.

Personally, Nathan, I don't believe you're giving the students enough credit. The ones there seemed quite open to reviving some of the old chants. I'm not sure who went over to Section E or when but game time is the wrong time to try that. A) There's no telling how much some of them had to drink prior to the game and B) There's no way to get them all to pay attention long enough to understand what is being said. (Plausably Collegiate or otherwise.)
What Scott was trying to do is plant the seeds necessary to get the ice arena rocking again. Not necessarily to revive old chants, but just to get the old atmosphere back. A captive audience is the only way you're going to be able to do that by showing them (with the tape) exactly what the ice arena was like in the program's heyday. Scott desperately wants that back and this is the first step to doing that. It's similar to what Dakich did when he first came here and went into the dorms, only Scott is also incorporating the players (who are definately Plausably Collegiate!). When the players saw the tape they were in awe as to how loud the arena was. Believe me, they were impressed and will do anything to get it back.
The program is about to turn a corner and we need as many people there as possible to see it.
As a current student I would have loved to have known about this meeting. When was it advertised, and where? When I arrived here at BG in the fall of 1995 Section E was where the students went. I met some people I consider to be friends to this day. I have noticed the downward spiral in regaurds to language. It was around the same time things began to turn down at Men's Basketball games. Possible a correlation? I will just toss that one out there, but as a student that is my impression. The only way to stomp out that language, and it will have to be stomped out, is to actually have the policies of the Ica Arena enforced! How many games must we listen to the announcer state that foul language will not be tollorated before the athletic department grows a pair and does something about it? They are afraid the students will not come back. I disagree. Its like breaking a puppy of relieving itself in the house. It takes time, but it happens. One moment I was embarassed to be a member of the BGSU community was watching a besketball game where a call was made that the crowd disagreed with. You could audible hear the chants of Bull#$%t on the air. Something has to be done department wide. But it will not until Krebs grows a pair on this issue. It will be tough, but it is needed in my opinion. That being said, the word "sucks" will not be one of those vial words to go. It is in our vocabulary. It is this generations "goolllllyyyyyy" There are much larger issues regaurding true vulgar phrases. Firght the fights that are winnable. Just my thoughts.

I think I'm giving the students their due. You weren't one of the folks trying to change hearts and minds near the glass seats, but some of our collective circle, and others beyond it did.
The effort was honest, just not effective. And in reality, I suspect there are so few hard-core students going that the reception would be the same in any case. We are in a reset mode right now. As I think needs to be the case, it seems from what I'm hearing from you and the others, seeds are being planted.
Now if we could just get "Bitter Old Man" to wear something other than his black outfit with a white turtle neck sweater, then we would be getting someplace.

It wasn't advertised. The hockey players were required to bring 2-3 students to the event as a kickoff. The amount of room required for an advertised event would have been much larger than the alumni room at the ice arena could comfortably hold. It was just an initial event designed to plant the seeds for the coming year.
well, I actualyl gave Nugent props, the scorboard shold be reading:

for years, and he finally screwed up. Its abotu tiem the luck ran out, but the fact that the onyl talent on their team failed, and him being so good. He is sick talent, not liek J5 sick talent, but he is sick.
*note* I dont give him enough props to even fix the really obvious spelling errors I made ever other word in this post. Maybe my age is catching up to my typing skills here...
