Dr. Bucko,Dr. Bucko wrote:Well, "61," as a retired Lacrosse coach I would have expected you to debate the issue. I have nothing against Lacrosse, Water Polo, Team handball or any other sport, ---- the point is, and regardless of what you say, there are too many sports at the secondary level now. The smaller schools can not handle another Spring team sport; they just can't do it without diluting or eliminating other sports, and that's not fair to the other programs. Lacrosse, by the way, is not even a State sanctioned sport in Ohio at the secondary level --- it fits into the same catagory as men's volleyball, water polo, water ballet, etc. --- Bowling Green needs to bring back some of the men's sports that they cut before they do anything else. And by the way, the most physically fit athletes in the world (on an anerobic/aerobic basis) are track and field athletes (according to a hord of information on the subect), and proper wt lifting is very much a part of their training routine much as it is in Football, and a flood of other sports. Don't knock it.
#1- I'm not "knocking" weight training...ALL sports do it now to various degrees because it's been found beneficial...only was pointing out that FB coaches originally didn't "like" lax because they wanted their kids to lift in lieu of participating in another sport.
#2- You're right in that Ohio has NOT officially sanctioned Lax as a sport, but the Ohio High School Lacrosse Association does sanction it, including official state tournaments etc. Many years ago, when lax was truly in its "infancy", I requested that the OHSAA officially sanction the sport to avoid practice abuse etc. and to level the playing fields for all programs. At the time, there were only about 12-15 schools playing the game, but more were definitely on the horizon. Now there are over 70 schools playing across the state with more schools anticipated...Biggest problem, to be honest, is finding coaches for the newer programs since Ohio, with the exception of the Columbus area, is relatively new to the game. If you know ANYTHING at all about the OHSAA, you should know it's a rather rigid organization, reluctant to make changes.
#3- You've stated that BG should "re-instate" the programs cut before thinking of adding lacrosse....Lacrosse WAS cut LONG before the track program(which I think was a mistake, incidentally), so it should be in line to be re-instated too, using your logic.
Finally, as to the funding of the sport...I Don't have an answer for that problem...I was only responding to the original post re: adding Lax to the program... I don't have an answer to the attendance problems of a top 25 FB team either, but I HAVE made suggestions to the athletic dept. re: organizing alum "trips" back to campus for games that are NOT Homecoming.

You are right/correct on all counts, '61! According to the State, by the way, "The Board of Control shall not accord recognition to any additional sport unless a minumum of 150 schools sponsor teams." That being the case, I wonder how field hockey (a strickly 'ladies' sport) got to the podium. There are only 30 such teams in entire state ---- mostly prep schools, rich suburban schools. Yet they are involved in a State Sponsored tournament every year. Perhaps that sport was grandfathered in. I don't know.

You're right in that Field Hockey WAS "grandmothered" in...why, I don't know, other than the usual equal opportunity for females argument... to be honest, if the OHSAA had a "clue" about how much money the lax tournament has brought it though the years, they'd have jumped on it to "get theirs" if you know what I mean.
Another sport that was given recognition along with field hockey was ice hockey, another sport played heavily only in recent years ( and a VERY expensive sport to maintain-ice time etc.) ...and then, dominated by NE Ohio teams i.e. St.Ed's, Padua, Shaker Hts. etc., along with a few NW Ohio teams, including someplace called Bowling Green H.S.
If you'll recall, I did say that small schools probably couldn't, even shouldn't attempt to put in lax as a sport...but, assuming coaches are available, there are usually plenty of boys left after Baseball and Track have filled their squads...To be honest, when I was a coach at Hudson, we got several kids who were CUT from the baseball team...and they proved to be valuable members of the lacrosse team...

Those of you who weren't at BG when we played lacrosse don't know what you missed. The games in the Doyt were big parties. We'd bring coolers right into the stadium and have our brews as we watched the game. The unwritten rule was: "As long as you clean-up when you leave, no one will bother you."Class of 61 wrote: #3- You've stated that BG should "re-instate" the programs cut before thinking of adding lacrosse....Lacrosse WAS cut LONG before the track program(which I think was a mistake, incidentally), so it should be in line to be re-instated too, using your logic.
Spring afternoon in the Doyt watching the Falcons crush tOSU was heaven. We had some pretty good competition in Ohio between BG, Ohio Wesleyan, Denison and tOSU.
I miss it.
Does anyone know what ever happend to Jim Plaunt?

I would have gone to those Lacrosse games. Sounds like I missed some good times there.Lord_Byron wrote:Those of you who weren't at BG when we played lacrosse don't know what you missed. I would love to see Lacrosse reinstated at BG ...
or at least some more information on the club team. BGSU96 and I would love to attend a club game at BGSU but there isn't much information available regarding their schedule, etc. Class of 61, you're preaching to the choir with me, Brother! Lacrosse is he fastest growing sport in Ohio HS, period. There are new teams popping up all the time! I am hopefull that BG can resurrect their once-proud Lacrosse Program someday!

Its been a while since I have been at BG and dealt with club sports, but here is what I can tell you. One, look up the club sports page at BGSU.edu. They used to list all of the club sports, and often they have a webpage for that sport. Usually the teams are decent about keeping up to date info. If that doesn't work, call the Club sports office, or stop by at the field house (thats where it use to be). I know they used to also have a club/organization expo at the union as well. Lacross may have a table there to find interested players.Eleven wrote:I use to play a bit of lacrosse as a young lad and am going to be entering my second year here as a student at Bowling Green and was wondering when the season runs and who I would get in contact with to talk to about tryouts, registration etc..

I, too, was hoping for some more info on the LAX team. I played in HS and was very excited to play here, but upon arriving, this was the summary given to me by a current player:
"f***ing... we party a lot and we f***ing drink and then like, f***ing, we go to OU at halloween and it's f***ing crazy and we party all the time".
This left me with one big question: "Do you play any lacrosse?"
Hopefully the team isn't the drunk tank it sounds like, because I'd love to play, so if anyone else can help me out with this as well, that would be greatly appreciated.
I'll check the link posted earlier also.

I don't know that I'd let that phase ya. Sounds alot like the rugby team (I never played, but friends and family did), and they're one of the best in the region, if not country, on a regular basis.
I had a roommate for a semester that played lacrosse, and he was drunk ALOT, but also seemed like there were some dedicated guys on the field, too. (Just from listening to stories, I never made it to a game.)
