BG and Ohio State head to head

Post by FALCON FLIER »

After the Falcon hockey team swept OSU this past weekend I got to wondering what the all time record was in all men's sports between the two schools. I have a feeling it is a lot closer than most people might think and I would not be surprised if BG has a winning overall record against Ohio State in head to head meetings. I know we have a big edge in hockey and I believe we are 3-3 in basketball, and 0-3 in football. Can someone find out what the records are for hockey, soccer, baseball and tennis. I think those are all the sports the two schools have in common on the mens side.
I know each school has 1 national championship (BG in hockey 1984, Ohio State in football 2002). I also believe BG has had more Olympic Gold Medalists in the past 45 years than has Ohio State. We have a lot to be proud of as Bowling Green fans. Any information on this would be appreciated. I'd like to have something to share with my Buckeye-loving, BG-dismissing family members.

What's your cutoff on National Championships? I know that OSU has won multiple hoops titles, and many football titles in the past. BG also has the "Small School" national football championship as well.

I know Scott Hamilton won gold, and so have multiple BG hockey players. Offhand I cannot think of any recent medal winners from OSU, but I'm sure there are some. Obviously OSU still boasts Jesse Owens, but that is beyond your 45 year cutoff date. OSU's trump card could be that they have the best golfer of all time. BG does also have a golf team, but we don't have too many Jack Nicklauses running around.

Interesting topic...

First of all, as I'm sure the Buckeye lovers are salivating all over already, they have alot more than 1 national championship. Their football and men's basketball teams have probably combined for a dozen or more over the years. Of course, in the last 30 years or so, counting football, men's b-ball and hockey, I think the 1-1 is right.

Hockey is 88-57-5 over the years. Don't know about baseball, soccer or tennis.

Did Scott Hamilton actually attend Bowling Green State University? I know his gold medal and world championship banners hang in his 'home' ice arena and he donated a big chunk of change to the entreprenuership program, but did he actually go to BGSU? I know he "graduated" from Bowling Green High School by taking correspondence courses from Colorado Springs while trainning. . .

OSU leads in football, 3-0 (which could easily be 2-1 in BG's favor with a couple more breaks  )

BG now leads in hockey 92-60 with a few ties (according to last weekend's program and CCHA notes. I know it could be a few games either way like TG's post. Bottom line is we have a huge lead on them)

OSU leads in hoops, 3-2, according to this year's hoops media guide.

In baseball, I think OSU leads something like 28-17. I'm sure Factman can verify this.

All in all, considering the budget gap, recruiting and facilities advantage OSU has, I think BGSU has done quite well head to head in just about everything. Of course if OSU would play at BG just ONCE in anything....

You know I really have no idea...good call. I always assumed he did, since his banners hang in our ice arena, but you're right it's also the home ice for all of BG, not just the university.

This is an interesting topic, but it's asking a lot to try and stack BG up against one of the largest athletic departments (if not THE largest) in the country. Their budget is so much larger than ours it's not even funny. Head to head though, we have held our own, mostly by virtue of a large % of the matchups being in the one sport in which we have a greater tradition than does OSU.

BG boasts Gold Medal winner Dave Wottle (sp?) as well...not to mention the hockey players on the 1980 Olympic team.

As far as I know, Hamilton did not attend BGSU.

As far as BG vs. OSU, you'll never get anywhere arguing with (most) OSU fans and trying to convince them that BG is better at anything than they are. I'd suggest a more productive activity, like banging your head against your desk every 10 seconds or so.

Scott grew up in BG but never attended the university. When he advanced beyond the abilities of the local instructors I believe that he started training in Denver (who also like to call him their own). As far as I know, he never went to college (not that he needed to) but still calls BG and the university home, thus the generous donation he recently made to BGSU.

OSU has Butch Reynolds (track) and maybe Katie Smith (bball) as medal winners. John Cook and Tom Weiskopf (sp?) were other good OSU golfers.

OSU has only won 1 national title in hoops (1960). They lost in the championship game in each of the following two years to UC.

6 national titles (or at least a share of it) in football.

Dave Wottle:

Also, there have been a few basketball players (and I think a couple volleyballers) invited to the Olympic trials, and Bernie Casey just missed making the 1960 US track team by a couple spots at the trials.

Even without the hockey, I'd say we've done very well against OSU. 3-2 in hoops, and two of the football losses were a few plays from going in BG's favor. All road games, too, of course.

Tecnically OSU has zero NCAA National Championships in football.

The NCAA does not sponsor a National Championship in Men's Division I-A Football.

Tressel has won a couple NCAA National Football Championships at Youngstown State, however.

OSU's "national championships" in football are as imaginary as the Easter Bunny- they are both nice to believe in and serve a purpose but they truthfully really aren't what they purport to be. . .

Before some of you go off on me please note this is somewhat tongue in cheek but I do believe it to some extent. OSU fans would quickly say our College Division National CHampionship shouldn't be counted so I would counter with none of theirs should count then . . .
