I wonder if we should run a poll and try to figure -- in AZZ's collective opinion -- the most greatest wins in Bowling Green history.

It would be interesting. Maybe Grant could even set up a special page for it or something.

I would suggest that maybe we start by just tossing out games we think out to be nominated. Then we could come back and poll it, just like they poll the Top 25.

The way I see it, this would be a list of big wins and dramatic wins rolled into one.

If we do this right, maybe they'd give us a page in next year's media guide :)

I'd throw out these games as obvious discussion starters, in no particular order:

-- Purdue, 2003
-- Northwestern, 2001
-- Miami, 1985
-- Purdue, 1972

If try to do this, I would *urge* old timers to really make a case for the games many of us may not have seen. Certainly Doyt Perry had some big, big wins. What were they?

There were a whole bunch of great BG vs Miami and BG vs OU games in the late fifties and early sixties, and I think one of BG biggest wins was against Delaware in 1959(?). It has been a long time.......I can't remember.
There were also a couple of nice winsa against Syracuse in the Nehlen era.

The Cal bowl against Fresno State in 1991 was a biggie. It marked our first ever bowl win and it eased the bad tatse in my mouth left from the "bye-ebye Denny" Bowl against Fresno in 1985.

He didn't have the advantage of working out of the spread. Geez, when Stolz pulled out the three receiver/single back sets (WR: Meehan, Boxley, Hunter; TE: G. Bayless, TB: White) it was about the same as introducing instant replay. McClure had tremendous poise in the pocket and could alternate seamlessly from a touch pass to a laser beam.

He was injured in the Miami game that season - does anyone recall the incredible comeback engineered by his backup, Rick Neiman, made possible by one "Dirty" Rick Howard recovering an onside kick? - and ultimately fell short of the NCAA mark. Nonetheless, he was part of an incredible team and was undoubtedly the cog that made the offense go.
I remember that Miami game well. We left the stadium with a few minutes to go thinking it was over only to hear thunderous cheers as we headed back to the dorm. Guess that taught us to leave early.
Oh, what a memory that is! My dad and I were at the top of the West stands yelling at people to get back in the stadium cuz BG was making an incredible comeback. Warthog, I believe I yelled at you!

That 1985 team is one of my all time faves...and it doesn't hurt that Mrs. Freak's cousin, Mike Foor, was a 2nd team All MAC DT from 82-85!

Big Games

Post by Class of 61 »

Factman,
The Delaware game you referred to was indeed during the 59 season, the year we won the National (College Div.) Championship.... The Blue Hens came into BG ranked #1 in the nation, we were #2... Led by Bernie Casey and several other guys who graduated with me, the Falcons won 30-8. and flat out dominated...
The most exciting game in my opinion still has to be the 1st Purdue game....simply because it was the 1st truly "big time" game that BG had played.... After the game ended, the PA announcer said that there would be a special victory party for the BG fans...Needless to say we all went, stayed waaay too long, still had to drive back to Cleve. in my 72 Valiant. Five fully grown men stuffed into that little car...We'd left at 6am on Sat. morning to drive to Purdue, got stuck on a detour through Indianapolis on the way home... I needed a "relief" driver from the Ohio line to Mansfield where he almost fell asleep... I drove the rest of the way, dropped all the guys off at their houses, and got home near 9am on Sunday!
Needless to say, when the Syracuse game came up, we'd learned our lesson, stayed overnite and came home on Sunday. Those Syracuse games btw were played at their old stadium, which was torn down and replaced by the Carrier Dome on the same location.
