Thanks for posting all those links, Findlay Falcon. I have very fond memories of Marc's time in BG, as I know you do too! What a horrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone who knew him. This has to be hard for Coach Paluch and all former Falcon players and coaches who knew him.
Yes, I do have some fond memories of Marc. One of my favorites was at a Dexter Shoe Classic Tournament in Orono, Maine. He had received a DQ in the last game before the tournament so had to sit out the first game of the tournament. We were talking to him during that game and he was so excited because the following day the team was going to Dexter Shoe and could pick out any pair of shoes they wanted and would get them free. :D

My thoughts and prayers also go to the whole Potvin family.

I ran across this today on the Providence Journal website:

"The United Hockey League has announced that it will establish a fund to benefit the two children of Marc Potvin, who died suddenly on Friday at age 38. Potvin, a former Providence Bruins captain, had been coach of the UHL's Adirondack Frostbite. Details of the fund will be outlined later by the league."

A Kalamazoo article about Paluch's relationship with Potvin. Some good stuff... including more quotes about the "BG family".

My condolences to the Marc Potvin family. I enjoyed watching Pots in my formative junior high school days. Rest in peace.

Redwingtom - that ESPN article is dated the 14th. Take a look at the link I posted from the Post Star dated 1-16-06. Looks like two more weeks until offical results are released to the public.

Wasn't his nickname "Potter" and not "Potsie"?

I remember it as Potter too but perhaps he became Potsie when he hit the NHL.

i had no idea, but marc potvin was a member of my church. my mom told me yesterday that there was a funeral mass for him on thursday the 27th (sorry this is late notice). he was also instrumental in the development of the fledgling hockey team at my high school alma mater.

anyway, another nice story from the repository.

H.S. hockey notes: Potvin a friend to programs
Thursday, January 19, 2006 By Andy Call REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

JACKSON TWP. - Count Jackson High School hockey coach Bill Houmard among those who will miss Marc Potvin.

The 38-year-old Potvin, who lived in North Canton, was found dead in his Kalamazoo, Mich., hotel room Friday. Authorities there said foul play is not suspected, but also said results from toxicology reports obtained Saturday will not be released for up to a month.

Potvin, a former NHL player, was a volunteer assistant coach for Jackson during the first two years after the club program was organized.

“It was a real plus for our kids to have him there,” Houmard said. “He did private coaching with a lot of them. He would also come to a lot of our games, home and away, and just tell the kids what he saw.”

Houmard said he often invited Potvin to speak to the team between periods, sharing his observations as well as encouraging the Polar Bears to play better.

“To hear him speak between periods was unbelievable,” Houmard said. “He was like Knute Rockne. But he did it without screaming and yelling and theatrics.”

Potvin helped the North Canton Hoover team in a similar manner during its first two seasons.

The funeral is today in Kitchener, Ont. A funeral mass is set for Jan. 27 in North Canton.

The United Hockey League has set up a trust fund for Potvin’s two young children. Donations can be directed to Pam Farkas at Unizan Bank, 1340 North Main St., North Canton, 44720.

The Jackson hockey team has a tribute to Potvin on the front page of its Web site. Friends can also post messages of tribute to Potvin on the Web site www.mem.com. Enter “Potvin” in the search field.
