Three Stars

Post by FalconBlue »

First Star: Dan Riedel (Ferris State)
Second Star: Matt Verdone (Ferris State)
Third Star: Alex Foster (Bowling Green)

Anyone know why #8 James Unger with a line of 1-1-2, 5 shots /+1 was not the 3rd Star? And he was robbed of a goal to boot.

Few things in sport are more subjective than the selection of a game MVP or 'three stars'. I also thought Unger had an outstanding game, but the only opinion that counts was the person(s) designated to make the decision. I'm not sure who makes this call at BG.

Isn't there some sort of award for three star "points" throughout the year? (Or am I thinking of a different league?)

In that case, when two players have equally solid games (say Unger and Foster last night), the University might give the nod to the one (Foster) with more points in that race.

Then there's the guy that selects three stars for almost every hockey video game I've ever played, which makes absolutely no sense at all...

There is no uniform way of selecting the three stars.

When I started at BG, little ballots were handed out to the people in the pressbox and then tallied up. That fell by the wayside for one reason or another by the end of my second year. I have no idea what the procedure has been since I graduated.

Different schools do it different ways. Some of them hand out the ballots and tabulate them, some of them just have the SID pick them. If the SID picks them, sometimes that person runs it by a few others for suggestions, other times s/he just picks them without input.

Hope that helps, but I'm pretty sure it just added to the confusion.

Yup, there's the Perani Cup awarded to the player with the most star points throughout the season. Jordan won it last year. Alex Foster is in 4th place right now!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
