scUM This Weekend
scUM This Weekend
Last night, scUM was shut out in Munn by a score of 2-0. This put MSU 3 points ahead of us in the standings. scUM is 2 points ahead of us with 4 games in hand. Every team in the league except NMU and Miami have at least 2 games in hand on us. That's 4 possible points each team could receive that we cannot. Obviously, not a very good situation for us.
We are in an interesting situation this weekend. We are 3 points out of last, and 4 points out of second. Every team below us plays a team above us this weekend. Because of this, THIS IS A MUST HAVE POINTS WEEKEND!!! It's been proven that any CCHA team can win, any given night. Sweeps by the teams below us are not impossible either.
After this weekend we have league games left against LSSU (currently 3rd), UAF, Notre Dame (they swept us in November), and Miami (currently 1st, they also swept us in November). We need to put it all together starting this weekend.

Not sure how the rules read, but UM might be without top frosh defender Jack Johnson Friday night after a game DQ last night.

He is out for Friday. Here's video of the hit that got Johnson the game DQ. It is not his first DQ this season. On the hit, I believe it is Kolarik also involved. He is the one that grabbed the helmet of the MSU player on his way down. He ended up drawing blood on the play. Cheap shots have been a part of scUM's game for many years. Protecting our players is definately key for this weekend.TG1996 wrote:Not sure how the rules read, but UM might be without top frosh defender Jack Johnson Friday night after a game DQ last night.

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

yeah, Johnson does sound like a goon... I can't wait until he's playing for my Hurricanes!
(Which, of course, also means he won't be pulling stuff on BG!)
Though looking at that video, Kolarik seemed to have more of an intent to injure, with the stick to the midsection and the swing at the head as the guy went down.

The Skinhawks have a great thread going about this sonofabitch:

They also have a pretty good idea - E-mail Paula Weston at USCHO.com and urge her to write about this in her weekly column. There is no excuse for this type of play in any level of hockey, especially college, and the fact that the CCHA is seemingly doing nothing about this makes me absolutely sick and embarassed. Paula needs to write about this and bring national attention, and national pressure on the CCHA. In all honesty, I am scared of what this good might do to our players on Saturday.
Also, I have to say after watching this clip that Kolarik was just as culpable in this incident as Johnson was. The fact that both of them went after Howells at the exact same time at that point of the game, to me, indicates that they were coached into doing so. Unless it can be proven that Kolarik and Johnson were next to each other on the bench late in the 3rd period of this game conspiring to do this (and I don't think anyone will ever be able to), Red Berenson guided these actions, and he should suffer the consequences. If for a second I ever thought that Pooch was directing these type of actions from the bench (and for the record, I can't even imagine him ever doing so - he has class), I would immediately demand his ouster. The University of Michigan's Athletic Director and administration may want to think about doing the same. Berenson's teams have been pulling this crap for years, and it is amazing how when they lose a ton of talent in the preceeding offeseason they become even more goonish. Absolutely amazing.
If any of our players are hurt this weekend by Berenson's goons, I vote we declare ourselves CCHA champions and demand UM's ouster from the conference. Let the WCHA have them - I don't want to see this kind of hockey in a conference that I love.

That hit screamed pre-meditation. There's a different between a hit and planning it.
I loved what the NHL when Bertuzzi pulled crap like that, and I think the CCHA needs to take a serious look at this.

My biggest thing with that hit is the fact that Johnson left the bench as an extra attacker, and skated directly across the ice to make the hit. Now, I don't know about anybody else, but I know it takes a lot more than three steps for me to get across the ice.BGDrew wrote:That hit screamed pre-meditation. I'm not sure if it's the same way anymore, but I know it used to be if you got more than one game DQ a season, it was progressive. First DQ was 1 game, second 2 games, and so on. I believe Kevin Lune's fight against OSU at the Collesium resulted in a three game suspension because of the double game DQ he received (1 game for the first one plus 2 games for the second).

If that's the case (with the extra attacker thing), then yeah, that's cheap. The hit itself, aside from looking like a charge, seemed fairly decent. If there was an elbow at all, it was to the body. As I said before, not knowing the extra attacker part, Kolarik seemed to more of the dirty party.pdt1081 wrote: My biggest thing with that hit is the fact that Johnson left the bench as an extra attacker, and skated directly across the ice to make the hit. And I've said before... that Lune fight was, while we can argue all day about it being a black mark on the game, one of the most memorable moments I've ever done on radio.

Apparently, he suffered a concussion and a cut on the forehead or mouth. Haven't heard for sure exactly. This is Johnson's first DQ of the year, but he does have 38 penalties with 106 minutesrc_ziggy84 wrote:Is Howells (the MSU player) ok? The cut on the face was likely Kolarik's doing, with that wild swing he took him down with. The concussion, I'd say was Johnson throwing him into the boards.pdt1081 wrote:Apparently, he suffered a concussion and a cut on the forehead or mouth. Haven't heard for sure exactly. Hmm... 38 penalties, times 2 minutes per penalty... He's got an extra 30 minutes to account for here...
Interestingly enough, looking at stats for Marc Potvin the other day, his partial year with Hartford, he played in 52 games and recorded 246 PIM. That's gotta be a typo, right?
