FF subscribes to Research on Ice which are emails sent out by Paul Shaheen discussing the most recent NCAA recruits. He does a great job of researching each recruit for the D1 universities. The emails generally have a paragraph dedicated to each recruit. The last one he sent out discussed just this recruit which is very unusual. Here's what he had to say:

Raleigh-ing Cry

Research On Ice, Wednesday, January 18, 2006

Bowling Green head coach Scott Paluch knew traveling far and wide would be necessary to recruit his program back to competitiveness and respectability, but he probably never thought that Raleigh, North Carolina would end up being one of his most important ports of call.

However, the trip Paluch made down 'Tobacco Road' back in December has paid huge dividends one month later, as Fargo-Moorhead center Kai Kantola has given his nod to the Falcons for the fall of 2006.

Though only the 18th leading scorer in the NAHL to date, the 6-1, 176 pound Kantola plays like a man-child on both ends of the ice, and as of last week was ranked as an A Prospect (and 80th overall in North America) in the NHL Central Scouting Bureau's mid-season rankings.

If Paluch went far and wide to get the left-shooting Kantola, the 18 year-old has traveled even farther to gain the status he enjoys today.

Not only is Fargo-Moorhead a long way from home, Kantola previously played a season in Finland, his family's ancestral home, and whose language his parents both spoke as children.

In fact, now that Kantola's a high-school graduate--he finished up his schooling last spring--he even spends his evenings learning Finnish himself.

Not only has he raised eyebrows with his NAHL play, Kantola also did well representing the United States during Team USA's run to the bronze medal during this year's Viking Cup played over the Christmas holiday.

Though born in suburban Toronto, Kantola moved with his family to the Raleigh area when he was only seven years old.

But no matter Kantola's roots, this is a big get for Bowling Green, now 11-13-1 and winners in seven of its last nine. This weekend, however, the Falcons will face a strong test in the Michigan Wolverines, who'll play the Falcons in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday night.

Looks like an incredible get for BG and, once again, Scott has proven that, through hard work and persistence, you can still recruit the blue chip players to Bowling Green State University! I'll definately add his stats to my updates.

Of all the players there this year, Kantola may have the most on the line. With most of the top junior players already committed, Kantola may be the best Division I prospect left. He has visited Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio) and Bemidji (Minn.) State, with two visits remaining.
Sounds like this kid has been under the radar of a lot of programs. Hopefully, he will be even better when he gets here. This really goes to show how much Coach Paluch really puts into recruiting.

Is it really official that this kid is coming here? If so then an awesome get for sure! :D

He has verbaled, nothing is "official" until he signs his letter of intent in the spring. Until then the coaching staff and university can't make any comments about him.

Once a player verbals, however, it's very rare (though it has happened) for him to back out.

Great to see it's official.

If I had a private jet, Pooch could use it any time!

I only go in to my closet when I need something to wear so I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about. 8)

Then, again, trying to get in there sometimes is rather difficult...FF must have a couple of hundred pairs of shoes littering the floor!

Recruiting

Post by justlike84 »

Yes Mawell was at the scrimmage. He is a talanted defenseman that plays smart on the ice. We still need to adress the need of a back-up goaltender we recruited a good 3 we still need a 2.

Updates:

Cepis has picked up another goal. He now has 9 goals and 6 assists in 34 games.

Perkin now has 12 goals and 12 assists in 38 games. Looks like a balanced player.

McIlrath is starting to climb up the scoring ladder in Indiana. In just 9 games he has 4 goals and 5 assists. If he can stay healthy he's going to be a good one!

Greer's game has improved also. He's played in 14 games and has a 4.41 gaa, and a .882 save percentage.

Nick Bailen (and '08 defensive Recruit) has picked a goal and now has 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points.

Josh Unice's stats haven't changed from the last update. Incidently, in case I haven't mentioned it, Unice is from Toledo.

Kai Kantola is currently 2nd on his team in scoring with 20 goals and 19 assists for 39 points in 34 games. He's just one point out of first place on his team.

Not only that, but last night, Biz Markie dropped the ceremonial first puck before the game!

Kai Kantola goods like a great pick up.
Brian Moore looks like a great addition.

Please remember that Kai ( # 80 ) was our back up position after Trevor Lewis( # 46 on the http://www.insidecollegehockey.com/7Arc ... s_0417.htm recruit list )
went to U of Mich.

Scott and Ron are getting good recruits.
Many of the best players are still going to the programs which appear to have solid Administration support.

Sorry to be realistic, we need major renovations to the arena so that we can
get the top recruits that Ron and Scott want as the 1st picks.

But look on the bright side of that list of recruits;
MSU got # 120 Michael Ratchuk ( and his father) .
