It tells me that they have the talent to be one of the top teams in this league but they HAVE to work hard and believe in themselves. Consistentcy seems to still be a problem. Yes I know it's hard to win on the road in the CCHA especially @ Yost but this team is still very Jekyl and Hyde like.
I love what Pooch is doing with this team but these players have to understand that nothing less than 110% is acceptable at this level in order to win.
Sweep the Lakers and get back to .500. That will be a huge confidence boost for the rest of the season.

Excellent post!! Those are my thoughts exactly. We KNOW the talent is there, but getting the consistency to show it game in and game out will be the ongoing challenge for this team and coaching staff. Sweeping the Lakers, on the road, will be HUGE!!

After reading some of the 'Goon fans first-hand accounts of Friday's game, it is starting to seem to me that consistency in confidence is a pretty big factor with this team right now. Little things like getting so jacked up on faceoffs that the guy taking it is hooking his opponent's stick before the puck is dropped (for which we got a delay of game penalty), and trying to force passes ahead in the defensive zone to create offensive opportunities indicate to me that the team wasn't very confident in their abilities up at Yost. They seem to have been intimidated.
They came out last night, though, and seemed to be playing much smarter. They were checking extremely hard (from the sounds of it), but more importantly, they were checking smart. I haven't looked at the PIM stats, but we really seemed to have won that battle, which we usually don't against Michigan because they are always so good at forcing physical play. This alone indicates to me that this team is perfectly capable of believing in themselves, but they are still learning how to do it night in and night out.
We are close, though. We are very, very close! A split with the #6 team in the country should bump us up in the Pairwise rankings, and we are in a pretty good position right now to solidify our game going into the playoffs. The upcoming series against LSSU should be quite telling - they are always tough!

If our team could play for crowds like the one last night every weekend I think the confidence level would skyrocket. I've been athletics my whole life, and nothings gets you pumped up more than stepping into the arena/field/stadium and seeing the stands full of your colors and cheering your team. I think if we started showing up to every game like we did for that game our team will really start to take off. Some of that confidence may even start to carry over on the road. Its always nice to beat a team at their place then smile and say wait till you get to our house. Last night was HUGE, hopefully we can keep the adrenaline going now!

To be honest, we probably only had a small amount more of fans than we normally do. Michigan brought down a ton of people and helped fill the place up. Now those fans who were there, were amazing!
You are right about UM bringing a lot of fans to the game. However the amount of student support last night was tremendous. You could tell just by the noise everyone was making that the crowd was a lot bigger than normal.
when the open end is crammed 10-15 people deep trying to watch.. ya know its a full house. that was as much fun as i have had at any BG sports event. and in my 5 years here i have seen a plenty!
