Info on Detroit Rock City...

Post by Falconfreak90 »

Hey all,

I have a friend that's a big Steelers fan and is looking for info on Detroit. He's cool even though he likes the Steelers...and I've gotten him to a couple BG games in the past so...LOL

He was asking me about the area around Ford Field. Now I know Hammb and a few others go up there and was wondering if I could get a list of bars, restaurants, hotels...ect around Ford Field.
I hear a lot about Greektown...what kinda stuff is there?

Any help would be appreciated.

Well here goes although I'm not a great one for local bars. First off, Greektown is a few blocks away maybe a 10 or 15 minute walk. It's basically an area of Greek Restaurants and Bakeries along with the aforementioned Casino. Really only consists of two or three square blocks. There is one Tex-Mex Restaurant/Bar on the corner of Greektown called the Loco Bar and Grill that is pretty good. Around Ford Field and Comerica Park it is still somewhat sparse but there are businesses opening up every month. Hockeytown Cafe is right on Woodward across from Comerica. The Detroit Beer Company is on the Square as well again closer to Comerica. Between Comerica and Ford Field is the Elwood, a diner that is a hot spot before and after games. There is A Billiards Bar inside Comerica on one of the corners that I believe is open outside of baseball season. There are others as well and a few fancier restaurants like Small Plates that probably do not fit the appetities of Steeler Fans. Basically almost all activity is south and west of the stadiums. East is I-75 and directly north is apartments, etc. As far as hotels, there is only one adjacent to Ford Field but by this time, you couldn't get a room there and likely not downtown anywhere. Suburbia is more likely for hotels. I'm sure there is more that others can add.

Mike,
Can't claim much other than the ONE trip to the MCB, but Greektown is only a 5-10 min. walk away from the stadium.... we didn't do the casino bit due to time constraints (we headed back home after the game), but we ate (and met Ed and Michelle) surprisingly enough at an IRISH bar that is "catty corner" to the casino.... was crowded with people and decent food. I'm assuming your friend, being a P burg fan, likes to drink; and I'm not the one to help him with that, but we DID enjoy the IRISH place from a food standpoint.

unfortunately, i don't think that anyone has IC Light on tap. there is also a lack of a primanti bros. franchise in detroit. so really, he should just go without eating and drinking. the world could do with one less steelers fan. ;)

It is very hard for Steeler fans to become BG fans simply because of the color scheme. But hey, if I did it, anyone can :)

I'm a big fan of The Old Shighleghleh or however it is spelled. They offer a shuttle to Ford Field. It is a two level old school Irish pub with live music up stairs and decent bar food.

My bud's name is Doug and I brought him to the MAC title game in 2003 and the WMU game in 2004. He got used to it...
Every season he asks how BG is doing...gotta love that from a guy that grew up in Penn State and Pitt country.

I have friends from before I came to BG that live in Pittsburgh, Florida, and Arizona. Every single one of them asks how BG is doing in sports whenever I talk to them. Spread the word baby :)

I can't believe I used to make fun of my Dad for caring about BG sports

That bar is called the "Old Shillelagh" It's a pretty decent little Irish pub, but the prices are a little high, IMO. It is towards the stadium from the Casino.

It's really tough to know how many of my Detroit tips are useful for superbowl because I'm sure it all will change. For instance, normally I'd tell anyone going to Ford Field/Comerica to park at the casino. Parking there is generally free if you go into the Casino and get it validated. Validation is done by a computer and takes about 30 seconds...plus the 5 minute walk from the garage to/from the casino and it's well worth it IMO. They may not offer the free parking on superbowl sunday, however, no clue.

Greektown rocks. As mentioned it's just a collection of greek restaurants, etc. If he likes a good Gyro it's a good place to hit up, I always grab one when I'm up there.

Right across from Comerica/Ford Field Hockeytown is right there. The food is decent, but the prices are expensive, but if they're into hockey there is a lot of good memorbilia there. Right across from Hockeytown there is a Johnny Rockets. Personally, I've never been to the one in Detroit, but I'd recommend against them in a general rule. It's a 50's style diner that is way overpriced for pretty lousy food, IMO.

Typically I think the best value food in that area are the Greek places in Greektown. I've never been to the Detroit Beer Company that somebody mentioned, but I've never found a good beer drinking place up there before. The Shillelagh is probably the best cuz they have Guinness & Killians, seems that most of Detroit doesn't drink good beer, as far as I can tell. That said your friends are Steelers fans so they likely know nothing of beer anyways...tell 'em to take their Iron City with 'em.

If your friends are into gambling I think the Windsor Casino is much nicer than the American side ones. However, Greektown is the most convenient to the stadiums, and it's not bad either. I'm sure they won't be spreading anything but $20 min black jack on Superbowl weekend...they may up it to $25 min. They've got all the games that you'd expect at most casinos. Windsor & Greektown have the largest poker rooms (MGM doesn't have one, and Motor City is very small). I usually play at Greektown, $50-$100 buyin NL HE. They had 7 tables of NL going last Saturday, I think they've got about 35 tables in total. Half are smoking, half non and you don't get your choice (although you can request a move once you've been seated and you'll get the next available on the other side). Windsor's pokerroom is all non-smoking. The games at Greektown are LOOSE, easy money for anyone that knows what they're doing. That said, the rake structure is HIGH. So it's easy to beat the opponents, but you've gotta do it at a pretty decent rate to beat the rake. With all the people that will be there for the SB I bet the games will be even looser...they may also spread some higher limit games.

Other than gambling, drinking, and eating I'm out of ideas for downtown Detroit :)

If you are looking for "adult entertainment" bazookies was a good time after the Motor City Bowl and it is right outside of Greektown. Also, they have great double vodkas and red bulls at Hockeytown.

I've been to all the clubs in Windsor, and quite frankly I think the ones in Toledo are better. Canadian clubs don't seem to get away with as much touchy feely stuff as you do in Toledo. The Canadian clubs used to be good value when the exchange rate was better, but now you don't save much, if anything.

I'm a big fan of Platinum, personally. It's less than an hour drive from Detroit, so I guess that should suffice to anyone looking for adult entertainment.
