Any reports from the Recruiting Reception?
Any reports from the Recruiting Reception?
To all those that attended the reception, how did the recruits look on the video they showed? What did Brandon have to say about the class? Thanks in advance.

Brandon on DJ Young..."We don't have anyone that looks like him in the program, he's 6'-5" 280 and runs like a deer"
Glaud and Jackson both contacted us. If we hadn't had been on ESPN 15 times over the past few years, we wouldn't have landed them.
10-12 of this year's signees wil play this year.
One scholarship remains....he may use it sooner than later.
Meyer has helped us in Florida...as has Bobby Bowden. We'll continue to work the state.
My own personal observations....Big Bird can WHOMP that football. Tyler Sheehan has a cannon for an arm and our defense just got a whole lot faster.

Thanks Flip. These are the two key facts, IMO. 10-12 of these guys on the field, and let's keep our fingers crossed for a turn around in our game. Also, I absolutely love to see us recruit Florida.Flipper wrote:10-12 of this year's signees wil play this year.

I attended the reception today. I found it to be interesting to get a look at what is coming in, but I guess I didn't think it was overly informative. If all goes well, it looks like our kicking problems should be over.
Generally speaking, there are a few players that I think will get redshirted. I really think that they would be wise to redshirt the QB from Jersey. This isn't at all because the boy doesn't have the goods, but rather because we will want to get the most bang for our buck with him. Let's face it, if AT gets injured this year, a true freshman as a backup is not going to help much. I think they'd be better off to save that year for a time when we intend to start him. But, the good news is that he looks to have some braids started, so hopefully he'll have them hanging out the back of his helmet by the time he takes the field. That IS the sign of a top-notch football player, isn't it?
Greg Brandon said that the reason they only pursued one OL is because we have lots of them. They have been recuited heavily in the past 2 or 3 years, and the team is saturated with them. Plus, contrary to what you read in ESPN, we aren't losing our entire OL.
I'm not convinced that we have any sure fire bets to carry and/or catch the ball for us next year. I'm impressed with Bobby Thomas and Corey Partridge, but I'm curious to know where the burners will come from.
I know it will spark debate if I say anything nice about the defense, but it looks like we have some guys that might develop. I don't think that they will make major differences for next year, but there is hope. There is definitely one DL that will be really good, and we seem to be getting some help in the LB area. If they make the same amount of improvement to our secondary that they made last year.....well, there is hope.
I guess the reason I don't get too excited is because I don't think that ANYBODY really knows what these HS recruits will turn out like. Even ESPN, the major conference marketing machine, admits that many of the best recuits turn out to be guys that didn't make it on the top 150 list. Coach Novak at NIU was asked how he gets players like Michael Turner, and his reply was that there are plenty of great players out there that just get overlooked. Coach Cooper at OSU told Josh Harris that he would never start as a QB for ANY D-I school. A couple years ago, Justin Zwick was rated the 2nd best QB recruited. If you add it all up, nobody has a clue at this point what any of these guys will do.
So, feel free to pick it apart. I just saw that nobody had posted any replies yet.

Almost forgot...Winovich will line up at TE some, in the slot some and in the backfield some. He's a talented kid who they have to find a spot for. Brandon wishes he had his redshirt year back, but they needed hinm on the special teams and he helped us win some games...
The DB from Jersey via military school, Sansderson, is in school now and wil particiapte in spring ball. He's expected to be in the mix for a starting spot.
Derek Brighton is this year's kid that get's comparted to Cole Magner. Pronty and Kelvin Davis are welcome additions from my perspective because they both look like they have good speed and decent size

Twenty of the recruits were captains of their teams- good leadership.
The overall average GPA of the group is 2.95.
Coach used the word"burst" as in "look at that burst of speed", several hundred times at least!
I was pumped watching the Big Bird kick the ball way out of the endzone. I hope he gets used to our wind!
Flipper - sorry I missed seeing you- I had to get to the Women's game to save seats!

I enjoyed the reception- and the following huge win over EMU by the women bball team.
I was relieved to see (confirmed) a few of the names I had been hearing about and mentioned. My Florida boys looked right on to me re: Kelvin Davis. I understand it is film and he is playing against regular HS kids, but he looked fast with a bullet. And elusive. Likewise the Miramar FL safety they named for us looked like he can flat out play. Period. He looks like an early contributor.
And Magnone from state champ Steubenville- like the looks of this guy. My buddy over there said he was a monster- and he just might be.
My mystery man Carlos Tipton who was "tipped" off to me in a casual conversation with his HS classmate looked like he could run on film. I suppose he will be a redshirt candidate, but he looks like an athlete on defense.
QB's looked fine. Boy, I agree w/poster who mentioned Sheehan's arm- my! And quite nifty on his feet for a bigger QB.
A few other guys I liked just off the cuff were Pronty at WR, Brown at DB and the punter. Looks like a cannon for a leg. And, of course, the kicker. Good luck at all! Parents of the kicker- see you in Cleveland!

Just an observation on Winovich, if he is so talented, why can't he excel at any of the positions we have tried him at so far? :shrug:Flipper wrote:Almost forgot...Winovich will line up at TE some, in the slot some and in the backfield some. He's a talented kid who they have to find a spot for.

Winovich has a lot of athletic ability, hopefully they find a spot for him that he can contribute.
I really liked what I was seeing/hearing about this class leading up to signing day, and it sounds as though a lot of that has been confirmed from those that went to the event. We definitely got some talented players that can play some football. Hopefully we'll be able to develop them and get our team back to the level it was a few years ago.
Winovich back to TE? As we've discussed before, I'm not convinced he has the wheels to be more than a blocking TE. In the slot? I dunno. I've been a very strong supporter of Pete thus far and am still hoping he'll be a productive player.
BTW, couldn't they still redshirt him like they did with Macon?
Overall, I'm stoked about this class, though somewhat nervous that we're talking about so many freshmen getting a lot of playing time. Looking at the glass as half-empty, 2006 may be something of a rebuilding year.

Looking at the glass as half-full, this team of young, talented guys won't be picked to win the MAC in 2006, but I think they will surprise some people next year, while gaining valuable game experience. They may end up winning the seemingly weak MAC East. That experience should pay off in 2007-2009 when this squad should be 1 or 2 in the MAC, no doubt.1987alum wrote:Looking at the glass as half-empty, 2006 may be something of a rebuilding year.
