Worst BG football memory?

Post by Rightupinthere »

On MACbbs, I posted about the game vs Miami when they broke their 20 game winless streak against us (17-13). The real kicker was their last loss before the streak was against BG in October of 87. We TIED them the following year and then the beat us in 89 to end the streak.

I still remember the Miami fans rushing the field. I was nearly decapitated by a low flying goal post. I also remember one of my high school friends flying me the bird then blowing me a kiss when she was running around under that goal post. "God, how I hate Miami" was my primary thought. Curse you Moe Ankney!

So, this begs the question, what is your most vivid and not-so enjoyable memory of a BG football game?

I also remember the Western game in 1988 when it rained all day long. I've never been so humid in my lifetime. We lost that game as well. Okay, we got KILLED in that game (37-10). Curse you Moe Ankney!

October 23, 1976 -- Down 9 - 7 to Miami with time running out and inside the Miami 10. Don Nehlen lost track of what down it was and we never got a field goal off.

Talk about fat punters, Stolz leaving speeches, and whatever. Nothing was worse than that.

I must state the obvious. The CMU fat punter game, hands down, is the worst. I all was set to go to Vegas, baby, Vegas. Had visions of blackjack tables and cocktail waitresses dancing in my head. Only to have them all disappear when the beer keg with legs rumbled, bumbled, stumbled 70 yards for the TD while our kick return team all seemed to turn their backs and look the other way. It was like the entire team was in on the fix. :x

I am going to say the toledo game 2 years ago. I wanted to go so I signed up to go with BG's little pep band that we took since it was over fall break and the whole marching band would not be there. When first arriving, our bus broke down and we had to push it around 2 turns and up a hill to the stadium. This wouldn't have been so bad but we were pushing a campus shuttle through the middle of tu's tailgating! Upon entering the stadium, I realized it was balls cold outside. We were pouring rubbing alcohol in our instruments to keep them from freezing up. When you emptied your spit valve, it turned to ice on the way out. Yay for spit icicles!! On top of all this, we lost 42-24 which I'm sure many of you know. I just hated going through all that game to see our defense come out so sloppy. Mix that with the offense not clicking and you have Harris only through for 165 yards and tossing 2 picks.

How about when Buffalo beat us, and [now] osu punter turrano missed some FG's to lose the game for us, breaking UBs horendous losing streak. That not something you want on your record.

I remember that game well. My cousin is a UT student so we went with him. We had good reserved seat tickets, but sat in the student section so we could hang with him. Of course the lovely event staff at Toledo didn't like having BG people sitting in the UT student section so they escorted us to our reserve seats on the 50 yard line. Of course we had to kick a couple of guys out of our seats and they had to go back to the GA section ;) LOL The worst was this guy escorting all the way around the stadium, and then he took the beers we had brought in! What a prick!

A worse UT experience than that was the one 2 years previous though. It was far & away the coldest football game experience in my life. And of course BG lost by about 35-40 points, as I recall. It was ugly. My UT student friend & I were among the few people that stayed throughout the game. Everyone else either left or was huddling in the bathrooms to stay warm.

Although I think my least favorite memories have to be from the 2000 season. The Pitt home opener was ugly as Antonio Bryant made our poor secondary (starting 2 or 3 freshmen) look terrible. We got absolutely torched that game (Bryant won the Biletnikoff that year). Although my truly worst memory was the week prior when I made the trip to Ann Arbor. Not only did our young secondary get torched in that game as well (David Terrell anyone?), but it was a freshman John Navarre that did it (Henson was hurt). We then had to hear how he was the second coming of Dan Marino cuz he threw for 320 yards in his first ever game. However, the lowest of the low came in the 2nd half when the BG cheerleaders decided to start cheering for the other team. THAT was an all time low and absolutely my worst memory as a Falcon fan. Watching BG's cheerleaders begin cheering for Michigan far outweighs any losses that we suffered on the field in my time as a fan.

Oh yeah, did I mention we were like 2-9 that season!? And wasted a year of Harris eligibility so he could play RB?! 2 games AFTER Blackney announced his resignation!?!? Talk about the lowest of the low :(

I think mine was also from the 2000 season, the Homecoming game against Akron. We had first-and-goal at the one, ran the ball up the middle four straight times, and didn't get in. We lost by 6. I was totally disgusted with our football program that season. When something else came up on the day of the Ohio game--the last home game of the season--I had no qualms about missing the game. That's the only home game I've missed the entire time I've been associated with BGSU.

Worst moments:
Watching the CMU punter score.

Watching Vinny Palko unable to control his emotions after the 1994 CMU game, which somehow to me, seemed to symbolize the last of the early 90s success leaving with him.

Watching Blackney leave Ryan Henry in the game against La. Tech in 1995's opening game, then pulling Kidwell after he leads the Falcons on the best drive of the game, only to watch Henry throw three more INTs and one fumble. People were so disgusted by that game they were boo'ing in a lusty fashion when Henry went back out, and boo'ing the coaching staff as they left the field.

Seeing BG die on the field against CMU on the road, in person, the next year.

Taking down homecoming banners at DLP Stadium as the 1995 UT game ended, and the rockettes acted true to their nature after finally winning a game for the first time in in five tries. Ironically BG would lose the next three against them, but Pinkel still left with a losing record against us.

October 8, 1983. A doyt Perry record crowd of 33,527 watches the Falcons lose to Toledo 6-3. I remember McCLure throwing a pick in the end zone. As good a QB as Brian was, he didn't lead the team to an offensive TD against the Rockettes until 1985. That 1985 game was his only win against those bastages following losses in 1982, 83 and 84.

Doesn't he still have the all-time record for INTs?

O GOd I had tried to forget that. What a crappy day, along with a crappy game. Their frosh TB's ran all over us that night, and we couldnt do a thing about it. Going back to my dorm (the one right at the top of the hill, Carter Hall) at the time, was no better, as people flodded there to escape the cold and decided on a verbal gangbang of myself...especially when they realized I went to school at toledo... :?

"Fat Punter" lose against CMU in 1994 and the loss to NIU in 2002 were the two hardest losses for me. Both games crushed what was very good seasons for BG.

Fat punter. I wanted to run down out of the stands and tackle that bastard myself. It was like that game put a hex on the entire program.

The most memorable, or least favorite memorable moment was Gary Blackney's last game in 2000 I believe against UT. We lost that game 56-21 on national TV on ESPN. That was the low point. I remember the temperature was like 10 or 15 degrees, it was freezing. Most of the BG fans had left by then, but I was there with my friends as the seconds ticked to zero and my feet were frost bitten and the snot from my nose frozen! I just remember thinking to myself this totally sucks and in no way did I think the future of BG football would turn out this way. Glad I was wrong :)

I was there with my high school band that game. Our director was from turdledo so he took us and we had to sit by their band. For some reason I didn't realize how cold it would be and was wearing shorts...I'm a moron, we all know this already. All I can say is thank God for blankets!!!
