Minnesota vs MAC Opponents

Found some interesting information. Minnesota seems very willing to play MAC teams under this new MAC/Big Ten scheduling agreement. Look at their future games against MAC opponents (this is from a Minnesota Insider fan):

2006
8/31/2006 @ Kent State
9/16/2006 vs Temple (Well, not really MAC yet)

2007
9/01/2007 vs MAC opponent
9/08/2007 vs Miami

2008
8/30/2008 vs MAC opponent
9/06/2008 at Bowling Green

I wonder if the MAC is plugging a couple of lower level MAC teams onto Minnesota's home schedules in 2007 and 2008 in place of Minnesota playing at Bowling Green?

I think that Indiana and Purdue are going to be playing quite a few MAC games in future years too, but I haven't seen any good information showing their future games.

i wouldn't discount the fact that glen mason wants to be the coach at ohio state. since he was passed over a few years ago, maybe he's going out of his way to play games in ohio, and therefore expand the gophers' recruiting footprint; maybe he wants to steal a few recruits from osu.

or, it could be that, after nearly hanging half a hundred IN THE FIRST HALF against ut last year, he thinks playing the mac will be a cake walk.

IU plays at Balls Tate next year and hosts WMU. Didn't see anything about future schedules, though.

Nah, I'm sure he remembers the Rockets beating him down in the first half a couple of years before that.

I think that Glen Mason is happy to play MAC teams in Ohio because of recruiting reasons. He already does a good job of taking talent out of the state of Ohio that OSU and Michigan aren't willing to offer. This gives those recruits a better chance to come see the Gophers play a game in person (outside of an official visit).

In 2001 we were beating Minnesota 31-0 at halftime and of course won easily. In 2004 Minnesota was beating us 42-7 at halftime and of course won easly.

Not much difference there. Funny how BG fans have selective memory when it comes to UT.

FWIW the Sentinel stated that the Minnesota at BG game was a one off and the falcons would not be making a return game at Minneapolis.

What happened in 2001?

We were winning 31-0 at halftime over Minnesota. We pulled the starters and played 2nd and 3rd teamers the rest of the game and basically just ran the ball......and won 38-7. They scored a TD with like 4 or 5 minutes left in the game to keep it from being a shutout.

In 2002 we played at Minnesota. We were tied late in the 3rd Qtr and converted on a fake punt for a TD to take the lead, but a penalty was called and we had to punt. They ended up winning the game, but the Big Ten officie apologized and admitted it was a bad call and our TD should have counted.

I remember covering the BG @ Minny game in 1986 at the Metrodome - one of the worst playing surfaces ever.

Just remember what goes around, comes around. You might not feel the same way the day it happens to BG. And that was a penalty call so it isn't reviewable.

Minnesota coming to Bowling Green in 2008

BLADE SPORTS WRITER

BOWLING GREEN - The first visit by a Big Ten Conference football team to Bowling Green State University is just a few years away.

The University of Minnesota announced it would travel to Bowling Green to play a non-conference game on Sept. 6, 2008. BGSU confirmed the agreement and that the game would be played in Perry Stadium, but declined to comment further.

BGSU's 2006 season opener against Wisconsin is a home game for the Falcons but will be played in Cleveland at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

As far as a return game in Minneapolis, if it's part of the agreement it likely won't happen until 2009 or beyond. The Falcons have a full non-conference slate in 2006, and in 2007, the teams' open dates don't correspond.

Minnesota finished 7-5 last season, seventh in the Big Ten, and lost to Virginia in the Music City Bowl.

In 2001 Minnesota played the University of Toledo in the Glass Bowl. The Golden Gophers' future schedules show a willingness to play road games at MAC schools. Minnesota is scheduled to open next season at Kent State and will travel to Miami (Ohio) in 2009.

NEW ASSIGNMENTS: BGSU defensive assistant D.J. Durkin will take over as special teams coordinator for the Falcons, the team announced yesterday. Last season the coaches handled special teams by committee.

In his second year as an assistant, Durkin will continue to coach the defensive ends.

"I think D.J. is a high-energy guy who is organized, can lead and will motivate our players to perform to the best of their abilities on special teams," BGSU coach Gregg Brandon said.

Also, two defensive coaches traded position assignments. Defensive coordinator John Lovett will work with defensive backs and assistant John Bowers will coach linebackers.
