Student Housing

Post by BGSU00 »

Has anyone else been following the harassment of off-campus studints by the city? They recently started enforcing a thirty year-old code that states that no more than 3 unrelated adults may live in one dwelling. They waited unti school started, then began citing students.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who lived in a house with more than three people. I was once in a five bedroom house with six other people.
The students are finding it hard to find a place to live as it is, now they are being forced to move out to comply with this code. The city of Bowling Green has turned its back on one of the biggest revenue centers in town and thrown some students out into the cold.
I have heard rumors that some of the landlords in town are fighting to change this outdated city code. They will lose out as well by not being able to fill their larger properties.
I think that the city needs to understand that simply because four or more people live in a dwelling it is not going to become Animal House.
President Ribeau is again standing up for his students through his communication with the city. Let's hope the city doesn't force BGSU's record enrollment to plumet.

We actually have another thread somewhere on here dealing with this. I do have to correct you on one thing though. The reason some students have been cited is because the houses they live in are zoned R-2, which is Single Family Dwelling. If your residence is zoned R-3 or R-4 you are fine because those zones are for Multiple Family Dwelling. When Greenbriar, ie Robert Mauer, built the Brentwood subdivision at the end of S. Mercer he mislead city council and asked for a R-2 zoning. After which, he is allowing students to rent outside the city ordinances.

My feeling is the students should not be up in arms at the City for enforcing a law that is on the books, but rather at looking at filing a rather large class action lawsuit against any and all landlords that are renting apartments to them in violation of the law.

These landlords know the law. If they are letting more than three students sign a lease, then the students should have a legitimate claim for damages.

And in the future, the students should look at doing two things:

1. Organizing some type of economic action against those realtors that have violated the law and caused hardships on the students.

IDEA - File a complaint against your landlord and place your rent monies into an escrow account with the Clerk of Courts. The landlord is going to be forced to take action to receive his/her money. If you were smart and paid into Student Legal Services, you have an attorney that will advise you as to how best to handle something like this.

2. VOTE in Bowling Green elections, and not worrying about what goes on back home. Back home does not affect you as much as voting in BG does. If you are upset with the city for enforcing this law, then you need to take action and vote against those members of the city council that you are angry at.

I personally believe the City of Bowling Green should enforce this law. I am happy they are not backing down to the university students. But I am not happy with those landlords that have taken advantage of (and continually take advantage of) University students.

Welcome to the real world. Some of the laws suck.

But you have to adjust to the laws, the laws do not adjust to you.
