3rd in the West?
What does the media know anyway?

Re: 3rd in the West?
Every poll, quote, comment whatever gives me another reason to wish tomorrow was November 23. Of course, we need to win a few before that, but I hate the Rockets! (..and their fans, and their fat coach, and their phallic mascot, and their Astro-Brick, and the slums in which their campus lies, and...)rollalong94 wrote:What does the media know anyway?

Re: 3rd in the West?
I am actually surprised that only 3 media people picked NIU to win the west. I am not surprised at all by our position given everyone's points about the schedule and J5 moving on. However, defense does win championships and UT will not simply be able to "outscore" everyone on their schedule. The BG/NIU winner will play in the MAC Championship game.rollalong94 wrote:What does the media know anyway?

kent state
does bill needle have a vote, because i can't imagine that anyone would pick kent state to win the east.
i'm not surprised by the way that the west shook down, but i think that niu and bg (if we pull out at least one of those two games on the road) will MORE than give ut a run for its money.

Re: kent state
anyone that gets credentialed and shows up has a vote. So it could have been Needle, or a Kent State student journalist, or Dave Hackenberg could have spilled some hot sauce next to Kent State on the ballot, and when he went to lick it off, it formed a checkmark.jacojdm wrote:does bill needle have a vote, because i can't imagine that anyone would pick kent state to win the east.

But thanks, I was proud of it!
As a member of the media, I'm insulted. Really. It hurts.
If someone outside of the BG circle had to make a safe bet, third place would be it. We have two very tough games on the road and Marshall as one of our crossovers.
I've said before that the NIU game will end up being the most important game of BG's year (prior to the UT game, of course). Win it, and the pressure is on UT to run the table leading up to the Big Game. Lose it, and you have to hope NIU loses two MAC games down the road.
BTW, Toledo is AT Miami and AT Northern leading up to the BG game. If BG beats NIU, UT has a tough road before getting a shot at the West title.
And has anyone seen NIU's sked? MAC home games - BG, Akron, Central, Toledo. MAC roadies - UCF, Western, The Eastern Emus, Ball State. Certainly a favorable lineup.
Anyway, I want BG to win the West and the MACC. I expect them to do so. But if you're not a BG fan, it's easy to pencil BG in at third place. We'll know a lot more after the Northern game, for sure.

That's the funniest thing ever. I am sure he does get a vote, and I am sure he did vote for Kent. Bill Needle, the biggest dope in sports journalism....if you wanna call him a journalist. I am ashamed that he is associated with the Indians.jacojdm wrote:does bill needle have a vote, because i can't imagine that anyone would pick kent state to win the east.

Re: kent state
Good point...I saw Kent got a vote and laughed. Not that the Flashes will be a horrible team but they're not gonna win the East either.jacojdm wrote:does bill needle have a vote, because i can't imagine that anyone would pick kent state to win the east.

Last yr, BG was picked 3rd or 4th by every publication and news organization and look what happened.
UT is getting all the love....it will be a most sincere pleasure seeing BG clinch the West title on 11/23 while the rockettes lick their wounds. There is no way UT is as good as advertised. Offensively, they're very strong. Defensively, they suck.
GO FALCONS!!!! 33 days and counting...

Kent State could win....if the rest of the east (save Buffalo) gets anthraxed.
Bill Needle....what kind of a dip rips his name off of an obscure character from a cult show like SCTV? He should have called himself Doug "hoser" McKenzie.
I strongly advise all of you to pick up the newly released first cycle of SCTV Network 90 shows on DVD. Satire at its finest.... 8)

I almost replied to the Markey topic...
But dear Lord, you guys really hate anyone who does their job, don't you? Markey is one of the best, and he answers a question honestly in a chat and gets lambasted here.
Now, it's Hackenberg. Hackenberg is one of the best columnists/writers in the damn country, and if any of you (I'm sure a few have had the chance) have a chance to sit with him and speak with him for more than a minute, I would suggest it. The guy knows his stuff. Period.
if I'm not mistaken, Hackenberg (as well as Markey, which was pointed out on the other thread) have both covered BG in the past, and while I never saw Hack's coverage, Markey consistently outwrote the UT beat guy (Which, incidentally, if you want to rip on him, I could care less) in that span. In my opinion, BG fans, students, players, coaches, etc. should be, and for the most part, are happy with the excllent coverage the Blade gives them.
As far as the poll goes, you know people in the MAC NMA will see Harris' absence as a severe weakness, which may or may not end up being true. Let's face it, you go as far as your QB goes, and to the NMA, UT could go the farthest with the (perhaps perceived) best QB in the league, Gradkowski.

Not to mention that almost every one of their recruits is having trouble qualifying.Offensively, they're very strong. Defensively, they suck.

Nah, its been Hackenberg for 10 or 11 years now. Maybe he's the nicest guy in the world, I've never really cared to find out. Ever since I began "observing" him at media events and press boxes, etc, he's come across as arrogant and obnoxious. And as far as "knowing his stuff", I don't care if he can recite the Magna Carta in 12 languages, he's always struck me as an ass, and that's how I'll always think of him. Has nothing to do with what he knows at all, and neither did the "hot sauce post".Jham wrote:Now, it's Hackenberg. I don't have much of an opinion either way about Markey, though I'll agree that the chat had a bit of a pro-UT slant, or at least that it would have been very easy for him to say "BG might not be as good because Omar is untested, yet his surrounding cast will go a long way toward his growth and the teams success." (Which I think he started to touch on, but pretty much left it at "BG better hope Omar doesn't miss a stride from where Harris left off.")
