O'brien wins lawsuit against tOSU

IMO, tOSU was so over-sensitive due to other violations that they jumped the gun on O'brien. Apparently the judge agreed.

O'Brien needed to go anyway. He was a decent game coach, but after Redd and Penn left, he didn't bring in any really good players (and he didn't even recruit Redd). He thinks he should have gotten away with giving a recruit $6,000 in cash. I think OSU was paranoid about other alleged allegations and they were doing what they could to distance themselves from all involved. So OSU loses up to $3.5 million from a huge athletic budget, they have Thad Matta as their coach, who is a great coach and they have the best high school player in the country coming in next year and maybe the top overall class. I think OSU is doing just fine....thank you Mr. O'Brien!

Not sure how I would have ruled but definitely feel OSU did the right thing by releasing O'Brien.

Yes, the kid didn't play at OSU, but O'Brien was trying ot recruit the kid to OSU and gave him money. Gieger did the right thing by releasing him. It was a rules infraction.

And I used to like Jim O'Brien as a head coach.

If you read the story, O'Brien says he did not give any money until he know his eligibilty was gone because he had played professionly.

I never really thought that O'Brien was that great of a coach. Matta is a much better coach in my opinion. He is a very likeable person. Funny, I even rooted for him when he was at X. I am a huge UDayton fan. O'Brien is ok, but the coach at Wright State was the bad man in the situation, he will get his soon.

I never really liked o'brien, He had two decent teams that was it. there was something about him that I never liked.

I think even though they lost the lawsuit, they win over all. They are #12, Matta is bringin in top recruits, they are sitting on top of Big 10 and a #2 behind uconn in the D.C. region of tourney right now.

If you ask me, if the judge thinks the firing was unfair, then these should not count as NCAA infractions (afterall o'briend did nothing wrong  even though he still treated the kid as a recruit)

OSU was doing the right thing to get rid of him. they needed too anyways the bball team was on a downward sprial again and this gave them a reason to do it,thats why they were quick to do it IMO

This is bad for OSU. They are already in debt with their athletic fund.

OSU won't make the Final Four. Maybe next year, but definitely not this year. As soon as Dials gets in foul trouble the team has a serious drop off.

Dials only tries about half the time. He is a great talent, but he is like Randy Moss and takes plays off, or so it appears. OSU's downfall in the tournament this year will be if they have an off shooting night. They are winning games right now by making 60% of their 3's and they take 20 a game. They go 5 of 20 one night, they are done because Dials is not the type of player to lead them or at least be counted on to lead them.

I was mostly joking about that part, I think they have a decent chance but i agree that i dont think they will...

They have a lot of guys who can shoot the hell out of it. Foster, Lewis, butler (comming on big time) are all solid for sure.

Dials will try in the tourney..they are a team no one expected anything out of this year and they have as good a shot as any that is not UCONN or DUKE to make it far

Yes, he is. It is really neat to see OSU rebound the way they have from their NCAA sanctions, something Michigan and quite a few other schools have not been able to do.

I still hope Ron Lewis snaps a femur, though. Or something to that effect.

What I dont understand is this,

What O'Briend did, according to NCAA, was an infraction.
So, How can a judge rule he was unfairly dismissed?
Sounds to me like the NCAA should not count these as infractions if the judge does not count them as reason for termination.
But, thats just me and I am much happier with Matta than o'brien
he had the bball team on a downhill slope.
