He was a defensive assistant on the Minnesota Gophers staff.

His tenure was before my time as a Falcon, and my limited knowledge comes primarily from the Freak's posts about his recruiting prowess/game-day blunders.
Urbie is now, to my knowledge, the last active ex-BGSU head football coach.

Coach Ankney, although not successful BG's head coach, was still an outstanding coach and a pretty personable guy. He was one of many players under the late Doyt Perry that went on to coach at major D1 programs as both a head coach and top assistant. He was a pretty decent recruiter considering that he recruited many of the players on the 91 and 92 teams that won MAC championships and bowl games.
Wish him well in retirement.

1970,
I see your points but as the head coach of BGSU from 1986 thru 1990, he did as little as possible with some pretty good talent. Maybe he just wasn't cut out to be a HC...I don't know.
The one thing I will never forget....my Freshman year, 1986. My dad and mom (both '64 BGSU grads) came up to BG to take my older sister ('87 BG grad), who was a Senior, and me up to the Glass Bowl for the BG/UT game. It was the first time I ever stepped foot in the enemy's stadium. BG was outplayed all night and, trailing 22-0 with less than a minute left, Ankney decides to try a FG. I can remember the BG fans screaming to go for it on 4th down inside the UT 20 yard line. A FG? What good was that going to do? Might as well go for it and try to score a TD. Well, Paul Silvi made the FG and the BG team and fans were laughed outta the GB by the UT faithful for kicking that FG. Now, I know someone may say "Well, it meant BG didn't get shut out", which was true. But come on...
I'd rather just forget the fact the Moe was the HC here.
And the 1988 BG team had to be the worst team in Falcon history....here is a rundown of the 88 results:
West Virginia 62, BG 14
Ball State 34, BG 10
TCU 49, BG 12
Toledo 34, BG 5
Western Michigan 37, BG 10
BG 42, Ohio 0 (See Ohiobobcat? Even our worst team ever still kicked the stuffing outta OH!
)
Central Michigan 21, BG 3
BG 20, Youngstown St 16
BG 21, Miami 21 (BG and Miami 9th and 10th in the MAC that year)
Kent State 31, BG 19
Eastern Michigan 28, BG 3.
Needless to say when Moe's contract wasn't renewed after the 1990 season, there was quite a party at my mom and dad's house that day.

I saw most of these games. The ones that stand out are the WMU game where it RAINED the entire game. The game was so bad and out of hand that the band was trying to stay focused by changing cheers. Instead of spelling "Falcons", we were spelling Hippopotamus....which, thanks to our DM was spelled Hippotamus.Falconfreak90 wrote:1970,

Miami was in the very middle of their longest winless streak in school history. We were their last win in several years. We were also the one's who broke their streak in Oxford in 1990. Even when they were bad Moe couldn't beat them. I believe it was that loss that cinched his being non-renewed.
The man was one of the best human being you could imagine. He just wasn't cut out to be a HC.
CURSE YOU MOE ANKNEY..and enjoy your retirement.

I was at that WVU game; it was the year the Mountaineers finished 2nd in the country, if I recall correctly....but the saddest part was that we were DOWN 14-0 in the FIRST 4 MINUTES OF THE GAME! We fumbled the opening kickoff, WVU recovered, went in on one play; they kicked off again, intercepted a pass at around the 15 yrd. line, ran two plays and were up 14 zip! BY FAR THE WORST football game I've ever seen BG play....
