I have to be very careful of what I say here. Keep that in mind...

Back in the day I used to think CCHA refs were terrible. Horrible. The worst ever.

Then I moved east.

As a group, I don't understand ECAC referees. We've played several games at ECAC sites since I started here and each and every time I'm just left shaking my head. They seem to be making calls based on some imaginary game going on in their own heads, because the penalties they call don't seem to have anything at all to do with the two teams playing on the ice at that moment.

Wilkins was one of my least favorite in the CCHA. He does minor league games, too, and when my friends see him in Cleveland their reaction is the same as mine always was at BG: DAMMIT! It's Wilkins.

But I would take Wilkins a thousand times over Hockey East's Conrad Hache. Hache is bar none the worst official I have ever seen anywhere at any level.
That is a personal opinion. (based on some intriguing facts)

Good ole Two Gun Graff. Usually called penalties two at a time. Wait for reataliation and take 'em both. I'm still waiting for someone to mention Rutherford  :axe:

I'm still trying to wrap myself around the fact that you guys actually know the names of these hockey officials. We've had some pretty bad ones in mens basketball but I don't know any of em' by name, maybe by face or looks.

Well... Its easier in hockey, because their names are on the back of their uniforms.

Oh really? I had know idea the hockey refs had their names on the back. Wonder why that is? You'd think that refs of any sport would want to stay anonymous.

It's always been that way in hockey. It's to make it easier to get personal with your insults!

I know, it's extremely difficult. I mean, it's not like they have their names on the back of their striped sweaters...oh wait they are.

Anyone remember Melinda from the 01-02 season? Thankfully I think he stopped doing CCHA games after that season. Hall and McIncak (sp) are the two really bad refs that are still around that spring to my mind. Granted, I'm not a fan of any of the Head Refs. There's a couple of Assistant Refs that I can tolerate, maybe 3...

I don't remember a Melinda. Are you talking about Tony Molina, who did lines? Oh, the student section hated him. For little reason in my mind... it's not like he's Brian Wisner.

Oh yeah... just an FYI-- Hockey East actually took the names off the officials shirts this year and put numbers on instead. But we still know who they are becase we recognize their terribly ugly faces :)

I could be wrong...I was only a freshman back then...you know young, dumb and stupid. That might not have been his exact name, but it was something close. I do however strongly remember him as a Head Ref, and he stopped refing after either the 01-02, or the 02-03 season (I must confess, my total love of BG hockey didn't start until the 03-04 season, so any details from before then are slightly fuzzy)

Molina was a referree for a few games. He is still a linesman (or, if you want the correct, CCHA term, Assistant Referree).

"Assistant Referee"....which is a pretty funny title, since they RARELY do anything to assist the head referee....

And yeah, Molina sucked too!

It's interesting reading all of this...if you all think Pi, Shegos, Wilkins, McInchak are the worst officials in the league, then who DO you want to work the games?
