These types of things are EXACTLY what the student section should be concentrating on. You wouldn't believe how much it gets into the heads of the players. Especially the goalies. We would get them so rattled that the puck would be behind them before they even knew what was going on. Keep it up!pdt1081 wrote:How about Greene or Ganzak Thursday night? i would like to add that i was almost kicked out of the UM game for flipping scUM the bird...the only way for fans to be intimidating when opposing teams anymore, sadly, is to cuss at them...teams arent intimidated by a fan tell them that they "stink" they get intimidated by vulgar and cuss words, sad, but true

Ummmmmm..... bullshit?
Thing is, do you HONESTLY believe that players haven't repeatedly heard f-bombs and such, enough to let them roll off their backs? Please. For the thousandth time, I'm not trying to go holier-than-thou here, but yelling obscenities and flipping players off isn't a necessity, it's a sign of laziness! Why chant something creative when a "Hey! F-YOU!" will make your friends giggle and make you look cool? And if you think a guy bringing the puck up the ice is going to be shocked into a turnover by someone flipping him off from 10 rows back, you're probably mistaken there, too.

In my opinion, the "It's all your fault" chant may be the greatest ever.

Christ, chanting the goalie's name over and over gets under his skin better than flipping him off.
Think about it: is the goalie looking into the stands to see some schmuck halfway up the arena flipping him off? NO! But a nice, rhythmic chant of his name over and over can be heard, even when he's concentrating on the play.
Admittedly this works better if he's got a name that rolls off the tongue. Crawford-West probably wasn't as effective a chant as say, Ellis.
Best cheer I've ever heard (and I heard this one second hand, I wasn't there). A long time ago Cornell was playing... somebody. Say Colgate for the sake of argument. And Colgate's goalie wasn't the brightest of students. In fact, he was barely elligible.
The cheer: "Gimme an X! [X!!] Gimme a C! [C!!] Gimme a V! Gimme a E! Gimme an O! Gimme a Q! Gimme a B! What's that spell?" [answer back] "I DUNNO!!!! PLAY GOAL FOR COLGATE!"
Not one curse word.

Here we go again
The audile chants that can be heard and are different work the best. A slew of cuss words that players themselves use on and off the ice will not bother them. That's as normal as waking up everyday to them. When players are on the ice during play, they shouldn't be looking in the crowd (I say shouldn't because, well...). There's only one thing in the crowd that might distract them, but I'll leave that to your imagination. And no, it isn't your middle finger
Other chants that work are doing a "play-by-play" of the goalie's actions after the whistle. Spratt always skates over to the boards. Yelling for every stride they take (skate, skate, skate, tuuuuuuurrrrrrrnnnnnn), and every time the hit they post with their stick works very well. Some will even catch on and try to turn it into a game for them. When that happens they no longer have their head in the game and you have successfully helped your team.
The only time I have ever seen "the bird" get to a player was the second OSU game in BG this year. The OSU player ended up in our corner after diving to stop the empty net goal. The kid next to me stuck his middle finger up right at the top of the boards. The player went to stand up and it was right in his face. He punched the glass and skated to the bench. Had it not been the last minute of a game they were losing, there would have been no reaction out of the player.

1) What are you talking about?
2) How would you know?
SHEEEE'S BAAAAAAAACK.

Gives a cleared definition to "put 'em on the glass" I suppose.

I agree that flipping the bird or one or two people letting the F word fly at a player isn't going to work. But when the entire section E crowd booed at O'Neill everytime he touched the puck the other night--that worked!! It even spread to other parts of the arena and when Section E stopped doing it, other sections were. No cussing, no flipping, just good natured booing. I thought it was great. Also, saying Wallace's name everytime he touched the puck got his attention. Those are the things that are going to get under a player's skin.

Keep up that kind of stuff...It gets under their skin, gets their focus off the game and gives us an advantage!!! THIS is the reason that playing in our barn was why opposing teams hated coming here!! GREAT WORK, '58!!!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

The booing everytime one the the ND players touched the puck Saturday night was a good example of what can be done that is effective, funny, and not objectionable. More stuff like that and less crudeness will go a long way.

Notice that O'Neill (who was usually out there for the PP) never got one quality shot off. Here's how it usually went...Falcon Fanatic wrote:WHAT HE SAID!!BGFan wrote:These types of things are EXACTLY what the student section should be concentrating on. If you don't think that it didn't work, then pay more attention. I'd hope to see more things like this. The random chanting of "Wallace" worked too.

There's a reason the military has a PsyOps division. Getting into their heads is always more effective than simply flinging insults and foul language towards them. It's taken a while but, maybe, just maybe, the student section is starting to see the light. It's a hell of a lot funner when you can see that what you're doing is having an effect. It's also much more acceptable to the rest of the crowd and, believe it or not, a good portion of the crowd may even take part, making it even more imposing.
