VanDelay's MAC Basketball Awards/Hot or Not

Post by IBleedMACGreen »

Just wanted to let you all know that VanDelay’s latest article is a combination of our MAC Basketball Awards and our Hot or Not column. Will John Bowler get our POTY award despite playing on a team that is 2-13 in conference play? Who will edge out the coaching competition for the Coach of the Year? Find out below!

I may be crazy and way off of base, but how is there atleast not a mention of Somarco for POY candidate? And how is Marschall not even getting a mention for FOY?

If you really want to get flustered with this guy, wait until he posts his football predictions for next year. He revealed on another board that he's going to slot us 4th in the MAC East (behind Miami, Akron, and ......OHIO  )

I can understand why Samarco isn't a POY candidate, because he's on a lousy team. That award generally goes to the best player on one of the best teams. Unless a guy is so outstanding that he cannot be overlooked you aren't going to see that award go to a guy that is in last place in his division.

As for the FOY award, I think Marschall does deserve some mention. I've not looked at all of the freshmen in the MAC, but I did look at Acker's stats. He averages a couple more points a game than Marschall. Obviously Marschall has more boards & Acker has more assists. Still I wouldn't say that Acker is heads & shoulders above him, although I haven't watched him play this year. Both teams have pretty similar records. In the end it's his website and he can name whoever he wants. I think Marschall deserves at least a mention, but you could go either way.

I think it will be hard for Marschall to gain FOY honors averaging 5ppg 4rpg on 40% shooting in conference games, on one of the bottom teams. It may be tough for Samarco to even make 2nd team all-conference this year. It may even be tough for Marschall to make the all-freshman team, but I dont know what the other freshman in the conference are doing stat wise.

You may be right...I looked at full season numbers, forgetting that Eric really hasn't done much in the conference season, although he played pretty well in the 2nd half of the KSU game.

In my mind, it only makes sense that if you mention John Bowler, you have to mention Martin Samarco as well. Because the horrible team explanation doesn't hold water anymore as soon as Bowler is included in the running. I don't know if anyone else noticed this or not, but the article was not written by Nick. It was written by a Dan Whitmyer, who's email address just happens to be [email protected] . Big12-fans.com, oh really.

Also for another perspective, Al Fellhauer on the MRO podcast, said that Martin Samarco was his pick as POY.
