It is tough to compete with a state that actually cares about their higher educational institutions. We all know Ohio doesn't.
I'm sorry, what does giving money towards athletic facilities have towards education?

New Mexico has HOW many institutes of higher learning? 43
Ohio? 194.

There seems to be a difference in states there.

I think Krebs said all the right things.

It's an intriguing opportunity for him. If New Mexico finishes in the football Top 25 a couple of times, he will be a big hero. Kinda of a sleeping giant quality to the Lobos, I think.

Obviously, I wish him what's best for him. But, boy, we sure would miss him.

One thing not mentioned is that Dr. Ribeau is planning on retiring in the next 2 years or so. Presidents like to hire their own people, including AD's. Krebs can risk it by staying and getting a Prez that will support Athletics, or get a Prez that doesn't.

Also, Paul is in his mid-late 40's, so if he is going to leave, now is the time. He has another 10-15 good years left in him. Granted Jack Gregory wasn't young when he came to BG, and Andy Geiger was in his mid-50's when he came to OSU, but Krebs has been involved in Athletics at the college level for 25 years. Most University employees, especially at state schools, get great benefits and they tend to max out after 30 years of service. Buy taking a job at UNM, he will not only get a higher paying job, but a bigger bump in his benefit payout. UNM is to New Mexico what OSU is to Ohio. KING S---!

I'm not siding with either party here but the 194-43 difference does not really hold when you compare populations.

Evidently New Mexico has some nice oil $$$$$ brought into the state government coffers.

I know someone who talked to Krebs at the Falcon Club reception on Monday and Krebs commented about the difference in fund raising and how at BGSU he has to go to 3000 people for $1,000 donations and out there, they do a study and present it to the University President and the Governor,

One other thing - Marjorie Krebs' parents live in Midland, TX (so I was told). That would put them closer to her folks.

How many large universities does Ohio have? How many does NM have? It isn't simply the number of schools that matter. Ohio has many more large universities, with many more students, MA and Ph.D. programs, etc.

Of course, this leaves out the important issue of the quality of the universities. Anyone want to argue that NM universities are close to as good as Ohio universities?

Anyone want to argue New Mexico has nearly as many people as Ohio?

If you can't follow the thread, then I feel bad for you. Look, the original claim that started this discussion was that NM "actually cares" about education whereas Ohio doesn't. The claim is absurd on it's face, but some, apparently, believe it is true. Then, someone suggested that the 150 school difference in Ohio's favor might not mean much due to population difference. My claim was that counting the number of schools doesn't mean too much, if we don't consider how large the schools are. In addition, again, Ohio has many more good schools and good programs than does NM. If you want to believe that NM cares more about education than does Ohio, fine. It just isn't a defensible position.

BGSUFalcons,

Are we talking higher education or K-12 in terms of "caring" for education? Because if we're talking K-12, then how many times has the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled its state's funding of schools "unconstitutional?" Ohio has done that 5 times and still nothing has been done to fix it. Making the claim that Ohio is concerned or cares about education is the more undefensible argument in this teacher's mind.

Well, since some like to twist others words, here is the intent behind the post.

Where is this post did I say anything about the commitment to the education provided in these two states? I said New Mexico has the money to fund their universities and throw some $$$ at other things like athletic facilities. Ohio does not. Now lets talk about skewing numbers. New Mexica has 43 universities, but how many are public and how many are private? The same question goes for Ohio. Also, I would presume we are only talking about 4 year institutions here. If your state can fund academic programs AND other facilities you are doing pretty well. Ohio is not in that category and that is a fact. All you have to do is look at the decline in higher education funding to come to that conclusion. If you were looking to move schools would you not take into consideration a state that can chip in as a donor for major projects?
