One of the clear-thinking UNO fans here...there are several that can attest to my previous postings here and that I'm not a 'hick' nor 'homer' ... just level headed.
Most UNO fans here are probably just here to stir the pot to make things more interesting; a lot like BGBill once did on the relic that Mavpuck has become. The problem is, though, the fans that are attempting to cause a stir here are the reasons I no longer associate with MP anymore...well, some of them anyway. They have little better to do than to attempt to rundown another school purely because it's the 'in' thing to do. Most of what you find there is trite, especially due to lack of actual knowledge of the sport or a general immaturity.
However, that doesn't take away from the fact that we find ourselves once again playing Bowling Green for a playoff situation gone wrong. UNO dribbled a bye down their leg, collectively, by squandering a much needed second point at Western last weekend. By doing so, it really put the peanut gallery ... well; let's just say there are lots of panties in a bunch right now. Losing only 1 game in their last 12 wasn't enough for certain people who frequent the boards there (including one who is apparently best friends with the administration there) and were already calling for Kemp's head on a pike before the bus even left the KZoo 7-11. Needless to say, that's made the natives restless, and it just so happens that we are playing you again in a first round match up for the playoffs.
Granted, there isn't much to do in Nebraska as a whole, but it's hard not to pick on a team that hazed a player with sharpies. Lord knows it's happened to many a teen here, but it's never been anonymously submitted to a newspaper with pictures that were easily identifiable. Tragic as it is, it's something that tends to stick to the mind's eye about a team, school, and to some extent the fans. Like it or not, everyone's associated to something, and you just happen to be lucky enough to have Sharpiegate for everyone to remember. Love them or lump them, you probably can't escape that for awhile, no matter how much you want to tell him/her that it's 'all in the past', or 'that was so long ago', or 'that's not what really happened' after they heckle BGSU with songs of perversion and sharpies.
Hell, I admit I'm guilty of it myself. The first game back from their suspension was against UNO, and I walked around in an orange t-shirt with a few markers asking people to 'haze' me with some nasty saying etc. in 'honor' of the players of Bowling Green State University. I must say, though, I have a really really interesting keepsake now. Nothing is going to change perception but time, and that's just not happening quickly enough for BG. Until then, you're probably just going to have to suck it up and accept it...let it be water off your back.
That being said, I look forward to this weekend and don't carry any expectations into the games. I'd like to see UNO handle the Falcons soundly, move gracefully into Northern where we will again hand them a pair of defeats as we sail on towards the CCHA Finals, and most importantly our first ever NCAA Tournament bid. Is that a given? Not by a long short... Does it have a decent chance? Probably more so than a snowball's in hell. However, it is entirely dependent on the teams that take the ice. UNO could play another Western-esque weekend and get their asses handed to them; or they could play with the same emotion and quality that handed Michigan a 4-3 loss on a breakaway from face-off recently. Which will take the sheet is another factor that remains to be seen.
My biggest fear is the facility. The PTB had to take the ice out for the same high school wrestling championships that forced us back to that dump of a venue the Civic has turned into for the Michigan series. Since then, they have had enough horse-and-pony shows to last a lifetime (literally) and just put ice back in this weekend. Considering we have Lake Dixon on any given night anyway, regardless if the ice is in mid-season form or not, we should be in for a real treat. The dinks that run the show there are about as bearable as Rodney Dangerfield on a 96-hour crank bender. I have no tolerance for their ignorance or their incompetence, and it's a shame that a world-class facility like the Qwest Center (or Omaha Arena for those World-Herald supporters reading) should have to deal with such mediocrity and general sub-par management.
For those of you traveling to our now cow less city, travel safely. You are more than welcome to join the more intelligent of our fans in Section 213 while you are at the games. Granted, you probably won't meet AJMav there, so if that's what you’re coming for...I'm sorry to disappoint you. However, he can be found near the Amber Bock and cheerleaders...let your liver be your guide. (That, or we could point you in his general direction {hint: look for the guy in the Hewson SUCKS jersey surrounded by Douglas County's finest and cheerleaders on the north end of the arena...he's hard to miss.})
Oh, and a final note: Screw Mavpuck and a majority of their posters...they know even less than they claim, and are the reason other schools think we are nothing more than uneducated hillbillies...

What, are you jealous because downtown Omaha doesn't have a Wal-Mart in the picture or what? You'd be surprised what UNO fans can do with Photoshop. "We's mo edumicated than yalls might tink!"Originally posted by BGFalconfromCincy:

Seriously...The one thing I love about BG is that it's a college town. Not a city school like toledo or omaha...

Folks, a few years ago, I spent a week in Western Nebraska. Ogalalla and Paxton to be exact. The folks there were very nice and the food ROCKS!!! Thanks for the kinda words UNOCOACHRAHE. I don't understand why everybody just can't get along. Here's to a great series...wish I could be there, but my wife and I will be in Hershey watching Jordan and Jonathan play (hopefully).

First, welcome back. It's been a little while. You should make it a habbit of coming on over for some hockey talk.UNOCoachRahe wrote:One of the clear-thinking UNO fans here...there are several that can attest to my previous postings here and that I'm not a 'hick' nor 'homer' ... just level headed.
I just got around to reading that post. Very well stated, indeed.
Couple things: UNO fans are the only fans who remember and/or bring up Sharpiegate outside of UT. We don't pay it much mind, but I had to cite that incident as reason for some photoshopped images - which were creative.
Another: To this point, everything has been pretty fun banter. It's hasn't - nor, hopefully, WILL it - fall into a personal p!ssing contest.
Lastly, the naked guy running at the bus was quite funny. The anonymity of it brought out the fun jabs. Omaha probably doesn't have sheep.....but Kalamazoo MI DOES!

UNOCoachRahe--thanks for the post. It is sooo refreshing to find a UNO fan who can post intelligently and not spew the venom we have come to associate UNO fans with. It is amazing how one or two fans (AJ comes to mind here
) can totally turn you off to a team and their fans. Ay Ziggy has tried to be the kind of board where we can discuss sports without the flame wars. A good natured rivalry is one thing but hopefully it won't go too far here. Let's hope for a well played, exciting series this weekend and may the best team (whichever ones show up) win.

Tell me, are you going to discuss hockey? This is the hockey board, after all. Or are you going to continue to bless us with all sorts of .jpeg files and then scamper back to the UNO board to brag about how you just "cranked called" the opposition.
I don't know whether to be bemused or irritated.
Just a little fun, get over it. If you guys beat us, congrats, just f'n around with the pics.

Actually, I can tell you that nobody around Hockey East remembers or cares. The ONLY fans I EVER see bring this incident up are UNO fans. Hell, the people out here don't even remember that BG suspended seven players last year, and that's a large chunk of guys.
Perhaps it's proximity.
Perhaps it's because UNH just suspended seven players, or because Maine suspended five earlier this season (for an exhibiton game, which is still debated), or because Canisius--which has had more than it's fair share of trouble over the past two seasons--kicked four players off the team right before Christmas.
Most people's first association with Bowling Green--and this is because of my proximity--is Jordan Sigalet. Which is fine by me.
