The Krebs Legacy, what is next?
The Krebs Legacy, what is next?
The Krebs family will be missed. This being BG, we are losing a friend as much as an AD. Most of us here knew him, liked him, and have felt BGSU athletics were safe with him on watch.
Paul took BGSU athletics in directions it needed to go, and has created a sound foundation on which it can go even further. I think it will take time to count the ways things have changed at BGSU. As the next wave of change comes with a new AD, it will become even clearer how much of it is possible because of Paul Krebs. I think the standards Krebs established and the challenges coming, will require a very intense, high-energy person that can keep-up with them.
In that vein, I think the hunt for a new AD will be an exciting time. The entire University and Athletics program is in a very different place than when Ribeau or Krebs took their positions at BGSU. Krebs is departing at a time when a lot of talent will be in one place for the NCAA tourney and meetings.
Now we should turn to what is next. Will we get the Lobos in a home-and-home football series? What qualities do we want to see in the next AD? What is the image we want the next person to strike, as far as representing BGSU athletics, alumni, and the larger community?

I suppose much of this depends on who the next AD is. Do we hire from within, somebody like a certain person that has been mentioned in the past? Or do we look outside and seek somebody that could take the job by storm? Do we want a person that delegates the administrative parts of the job, and functions as a fast moving promotional type?
And will Krebs take certain people to UNM that came to BGSU with him?

Personally, I think someone within the program would be the best fit. Especially since we're in the middle of a lot of planning/building I'd hate to see projects get scrapped midway through. Their focus as an AD should now be improving facilities.

This is what I would anticipate.NWLB wrote:Or do we look outside and seek somebody that could take the job by storm?
The possibility of Krebs leaving has been with us for a while, and it doesn't seem like an obvious in house candidate is at hand.
(No offense to those in the athletic department reading this. I don't know you. Just a hunch.)
I don't see how any projects would be srapped because of an AD change. If anything, it might speed some projects along, with a new AD generating interest among alumni and booster groups. This new person, in particular if it proves to be an outsider, would have the advantage of making the rounds of donors with a clean slate. An internal canidate, depending on whom that would be, might not have the same advantage.
However, there are options for internal canidates, and I think that isn't a bad route either. BGSU does have a record of drawing strong canidates from the outside, and it shouldn't be a route to avoid.

Janna Blais would be a pioneering hire. (Arizona State has a female AD who had years of coaching experience as a volleyball coach at USC.)
In the spirit of innovation, she could name Curt Miller as head coach of the men's team (pre-emptively taking him off the market for greedy women's programs) and promote Jennifer Roos as head women's coach.

I think there is one other person, whose interest in the job I just really don't know about, that would be head and shoulders above either Jim or Janna. I'd tap Blais as most likely to move onto another school, be it UNM or otherwise. Jim is good at what he does, but trying to envision him as the head of all operations is tricky. I think we might have seen him making more speeches and putting himself into position before now, if the job were of real interest to him.leardm17 wrote:Do you think there is any chance we hire the AD from within? I think there are BGSU alumni at certain major 1A schools that might prove interesting canidates.

Krebs
Krebs was a solid AD for BG and will be missed by your school and by the MAC as a whole
The few times I spoke to him (including this past weekend in Cleveland) he was always a class act
I wish him well at his new gig
