NCAA Tourney TV........

Post by Falconboy »

I don't like the sound of this at all.

"25TH ANNUAL NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
For the fourth consecutive year, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN FULL COURT will combine to present all 63 games from the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. During the first two rounds, ESPN and ESPN2 will present 48 games within 12 telecast windows in a whip-around format with home market protection. ESPN FULL COURT, ESPN's out-of-market pay-per-view package, will offer complete game telecasts of all 48 games, while ESPNU will offer 11 of the 48 early-round games on ESPN or ESPN2 in their entirety. The final 15 games (regional semifinals on) will all have national telecasts windows on ESPN or ESPN2. In addition to the Final Four, all four regional sites and women's basketball studio specials will be available in high definition on either ESPNHD or ESPN2HD. The complete schedule will be announced on a later date."

This sounds like I still may not be able to watch the ladies 1st round game in my mobile home which does have espn ,espn2 and epsn classic but thats all. Sounds like you would have to have extra epsn packages to get these 1st and 2nd round games. This stinks royally. Man, living in AZ sucks if your a BG fan trying to get the games from back home.

Tell me about it.

I'll tell you whats worse is that this is wildly unfair to do to women's basketball. ESPN would never do a "whip-around" format for the men's tourney, and to me it shows an accute lack of respect for the women's game. As a firm believer in Title IX, I wish it applied to media coverage of collegiate athletics, too. If ESPN simply does not have enough air time to air both the men's and the women's tourneys, then they shouldn't be able to own exclusive rights to both of them. I'm sure ABC/CBS/FSN etc. would be more than happy to use their air time and affiliates to air the tournament if they were given the chance. The ratings would be at least equal to, if not greater than, normal (daytime especially) ratings.

For me this goes well beyond simply not being able to see BG games, but I do sincerely hope that we end up in either Denver or Tucson so that I can just go to the games. At least you folks in Ohio will actually get to see the game thanks to the "home market protection." At least ESPN got that part right - but something tells me that Ohio State and BG better not be playing at the same time...

First of all what is this whip-around-format anyway? I've never heard of this. I didn't have a problem seeing the ladies last year when I was at at my friends house in Ohio except for the early portion when the where still showing a game that was ending. I wonder if this mean I'm gonna have to go to a sports bar again to catch the game. Hopefully this RT O'Sullvians that I've been going to lately has all the espnu and fullcourt packages. Unless theirs a stinking blackout for games from other regions for espn too like fsn did. Man, this stuff po's me off. I wonder if the're is a another place to stream the games on the net like the Mac Tourney was.

Guess we're gonna have to wait till later this afternoon to see for sure what might happen.

CBS owns the rights to the men's tourney, not ESPN.

Back in '03 when the US invaded Iraq, CBS Sports allowed ESPN to broadcast the first two rounds of the men's tourney as the CBS News division took over the netwrok and focused on the invasion.

And ABC owns ESPN.

I think the "whip around" format is where parts of every game are shown in non-home market areas. 5 minutes or so from this game, 5 minutes from the next and so on. :-k

All I know is I'll probably be getting at least 4 ESPNs for the next few weeks. Our standard package through DISH gives us ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNA, ESPN2A. Sometimes there's even ESPN3A, and ESPN4A. Too bad I'm not a big basketball fan. I'll usually only watch if BG's playing.

Maybe I should have quoted BO for that comment.

So...

Anyone have a clue on my chances of seeing our ladies playon espn at my mobile home? I may have to check out espn.com or something to figure out what games would be available to be seen out here in the BG broadcast wasteland that is Arizona.
