That was my thought. It's football. There are no p*ssies in football! Or at least there shouldn't be.Warthog wrote:The pros play outside in Green Bay in January. Why couldn't a northern college team host a playoff game outdoors in Decemeber? That's the advantage of getting a higher seed and having a southern team come up and play in the snow.

The problem is you define "meaning something" as having to have a connection to a tourney. I think its a narrow view of "meaning something" to have to be linked to something you can't win. I'd rather have 5 teams play in modest bowl games than waste all of our time by sending one sheep to the slaughter house each season.hammb wrote:As I've said many, many times. I'd much rather have one team get into a postseason that means something than have 2-3 teams get into worthless bowl games that are the butt of jokes to most of the college football world.orangeandbrown wrote:And four MAC teams would never make the post-season, as we are being told could happen this bowl season. We'd never even get three....or two.
There will never be a playoff, so who cares. The entire debate is a waste of time.

I doubt it. I think realitively few fans would be able to truly follow their team but by TV. The feel of such games wouldn't be remotely close to what folks experience for single bowl games.SaxyIrishTenor wrote:Dedicated fans will travel for playoff games. I wouldn't worry about the fans at all...doughash wrote: but I really see an issue with fans of the 2 final being willing and able to travel for games 4 consecutive weekends, especially around the holiday season.

When all this non-sense got started years ago, people said we had to have the best team decided. Who is to say that the "best" team is the conference title holder? What happens when an Ohio State gets screwed out of that system because they are tied with somebody they don't play, and they went to the "playoff" more recently? Who is to say that a once-in-a-million loss in a given conference should eliminate a clearly better team because they miss the title by an inch?Warthog wrote:Twelve teams, eleven conference champs and one at-large (Notre Dame or other worthy 'BCS' team).
You'll never have a system that allows all those with a legit arguement to play, nor would any system that allows that to happen be viable. Thus, there just simply can't and won't be any system that makes people happy. So why screw three or four MAC teams out of bowls to try?

One in ten BG fans that can go to a bowl, might be able to make a futile playoff game, and most won't exactly because the game is almost unwinnable.Warthog wrote: I understand the issue of fans traveling to multiple games. But schools like OSU, Michigan, Texas, etc would not have any problems getting a huge contingent of fans to show up at any playoff football game. And if a mid-major team happened to advance, they would draw in the local fans to come root for the underdog. If it happened to be BG, I would scrape all the money I have together to go to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity such as this.
And I'd like to have more than a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity such as the occasional bowl game, than wait and die before hell freezes over and we make, and actually win a playoff game....only to lose the next week and end on a sour note.
And why do we care if the Michigans and OSU's can send their fans, we aren't them.

Alright, since we are debating the impossible for the sake of fun, have at this...
Pair all D1A conference with a partner. For conferences without divisions, pair them with another that doesn't, or an independent. Have the conferences proceed on an 11 game schedule. At the end of the year, let the division champions play in the conference title game, with the rest of the conference playing a cross-divisional opponent as their 12th game. Send the winners of each conference title game to play their 13th (which normally would be a conference title game as matters stand) game against the title winner of the partner conference. Send the winner of that to a BCS bowl. Let the top two winners of the BCS go to a plus-one game. The rest of 1A can go along to their bowl games as they do now. There would be no more games then, than there are now. You would preserve the bowl system totally. You'd see new home games, TV rights, TV money, and you end the madness. If you can't get your fill of football from that, you never will.

Relax pal, maybe you didn't read the opening line of this topic. I said "let's have some fun with this." Not freak out about this topic. I know there will probably never be a playoff. I think everyone knows that. But without too much to talk about in the offseason I thought maybe it'd be fun to b.s. about it. If you think it's a waste of time, then why did you just post 5 times in a row? We're having fun here. I like hearing other people's opinions on it. Don't post if you think it's a waste of time.

Geez Nathan, you just wasted 30 minutes on a debate that you just said is a waste of time. How smart does that make you?NWLB wrote:There will never be a playoff, so who cares. The entire debate is a waste of time.

If you can't win your conference, you don't deserve to be there. Get the job done during the regular season and you get your shot at the big prize. I don't want to hear any excuses about this or that. Win or shut up.NWLB wrote:When all this non-sense got started years ago, people said we had to have the best team decided. With an attitude like that, I think most BG fans would be happier if you did just stay home.NWLB wrote:One in ten BG fans that can go to a bowl, might be able to make a futile playoff game, and most won't exactly because the game is almost unwinnable.

I will politely disagree with you here. Winning a bowl game doesn't mean sh!t. Winning an playoff game toward a shot at a national championship is something that you would never forget. I couldn't even tell you who scored our first TD against Northwestern in the MCB a few years back and I was there.
Because those are the schools that would most likely be advancing in a playoff and they would be the fans that need to attend the games to make the system work.NWLB wrote:And why do we care if the Michigans and OSU's can send their fans, we aren't them.

....
So winning our past four bowl games doesn't mean anything? Truly, losing a playoff game you don't have a chance to win anyway means something then.
.....
So if its only about the teams that can advance, why bother sending BG or any MAC school? Because you've just admitted it means nothing, thus there isn't anything to follow or care about from BG's point of view. So give us our bowl games and be done with it.
