Status of program
I dont think the hockey thread is a pissing match. There is no point of a message board if we all have the same opinions. I respect everyones opinion, but when the team we are talking about has had several losing seasons in a row minus the '04-'05 .500 mark there will be some negativety, that is life.
And this was the first year which Pooch did not improve on the year prior.

This thread won't drop into one of THOSE discussions.
I'll sick FF on y'all.
The hockey board is different for the most part. If there are disagreements, it's usually met with logic than with emotion - which cannot be said for other boards.

The purpose of me starting this post was not to complain or suggest Scott and Ron can't hack it. I tried to make a factual and historical argument that we have been down longer and deeper than I realized and from what I have heard and read from other people's thoughts. I had an interesting talk with a BG assistant coach about 10 years ago concerning a kid who wanted to walk on. He suggested that he go to a lesser school like Miami. I like and want passion for the program from the coaching staff but unfortunately his opinion was not to be used in the same sentence as reality. Like it or not, Miami has been a better program than BG's over the past 15 years.
The facility issue rankles me a bit when people suggest we don't need better facilities. It's the Michigans and Mich States who don't because of their tradition and I was trying to inject a dose of reality (less than 6th place ave finish over the past 17 years) for all of us to realize that we need every advantage that we can - Presiden'ts and AD's support, new facilities, big crowds - everything that lives and breathes success. I'm suggesting that for those who agree with me, don't leave a stone unturned to do what needs to be done to encourage the powers to be to make the necessary improvements to the program.
On another note, I am excited about the effort and passion that both Ron and Scott bring and I give them 2 -3 years and the program will be out of it's doldrums. I just think to move it ahead of NMU, Neb-O, Miami these other areas need to be addressed and rectified to make BG the top non-Big Ten hockey school in the CCHA and a frequent NCAA tournament visitor.

I just honestly don't see much support outside those of the hockey program. The administration seems to have the view that all you need is a playing surface and you should be able to compete. Thank God we had a guy like Krebs who had some vision. Hopefully someone comes along and follows through with that vision.

My agrument on this is that a new facility won't bring in better recruits. Now, some may use OSU as a case for a facility bringing in better reruits, but look at the conditions of the OSU Ice Rink compared to the BGSU Ice Arena. That is where the difference in facilities lies. The OSU Ice Rink didn't even have a regulation sized ice. A new facility at BG won't bring in the better recruits. The crowds will. Unfortunately, one of the easiest ways to bring in a crowd (besides winning) is to build a new facility. People will come just because it's new. That's the basis for my argument on facilities. If the coaching staff is able to build a consistantly winning team with the current facilities, in 2-3 years you won't hear anybody talk about building a new building. "Why destory all that history?" will be a comment you will hear quite often.Dublin Falcon wrote:The facility issue rankles me a bit when people suggest we don't need better facilities. Did you steal that from the hoops forum?pdt1081 wrote:If the coaching staff is able to build a consistantly winning team with the current facilities, in 2-3 years you won't hear anybody talk about building a new building. "Why destory all that history?" will be a comment you will hear quite often.

Now, I'm not saying improvements shouldn't be done. There are definately things that need to be done before next season (but that's another thread

As far as I know there are no plans for a new facility, but there are plans for renovating the current facility. Such things as raising the roof, luxury boxes, new concessions, pro shop, etc. There also seems to be consideration for getting rid of the curling ice and turning it into skating ice for practice and youth hockey. (Although the curling ice is unique to this area, it doesn't get alot of use compared to what it costs to keep it there. Making it into another skating sheet will allow them to rent it out much more readily, as well as having two hockey games going on at the same time if need be.) I've not seen the plans, but have talked to those who have. Whether it will all come to fruition remains to be seen.
