What's Next for the Doyt?
So, what's next for the Doyt?

I was wondering when we were gonna come back around to this discussion.TG1996 wrote:So, what's next for the Doyt?
I would like to see them get rid of all the trash they constantly play on the scoreboard. From what I can gather from my peer's opinions, there is a lack of a college atmosphere because no one gets to hear things like the band playing first and ten or eat em up. Every time the crowd starts to get psyched up they play some bg commercial on the scoreboard, and I'm not sure what the goal of that is. Are they trying to convince the student body or the alumni or the students parents that BG is the place for their future?
And how about some college football traditional type behavior. People screaming their fight song, BG-SU, chanting with the cheerleaders (I can't remember last time I heard anyone do that), our school seems to have no football traditions and that is part of the alure that schools in the big ten have. If we do have those traditions I must be missing them because I'm never in the student section. For example, and sorry to keep bringing up OSU, but what happens when tbdbitl plays hang on sloopy? you get over 100,000 people shouting O H I O. When the FMB plays ay zig, eatem up or first and ten, hardly anything happens.
Someone needs to come up with some way of instilling pride in the university. We are not a traditional school, or if we were at one point we aren't anymore, at least not in football anyways. Its there a little bit in hockey, and rarely in basketball, but there is nothing in football. Traditions are what give a school pride and we have no traditions so there is no pride. Something as simple as a stupid gimmick could be started i.e. people dressing up crazy, super fans (like the animals), a guy in an orange tux who never misses a game, SNAKEMAN for goodness' sake. If Snakeman doesn't make us proud of our school and inspire every one of us to be insane for our teams then I don't know what will.
I can go on forever and I just might try at some point, but these are a couple of my major concerns/desires for our overall atmosphere. I know some of these aren't issues you can solve with cosmetic improvement or visible changes to the stadium, but when team talk about places that are tough to play like the big house, ND, or Ohio Stadium, they're not afraid of the actual venue, they're afraid of the people in it and the venue's atmosphere. The Doyt doesn't need to be terribly glamorous for me, although I would love if it was, it just needs to be packed full of the mean students that this school used to be reputable for.

That chicken dance by the cheerleaders should be banned. I sat just outside the press box at the Toledo game and could see a monitor with ESPN2's broadcast of the game. I was praying that the commercial would last long enough until the dance was over so that the rest of the country wouldn't see such stupidity associated with our school. I think the broadcast just caught the last few seconds of it.
My only problem with the pole dance is that none of the girls on the cheerleading squad would be doing it, however most of the guys I know on the squad would.Flipper wrote:Pole dance=good (women only)

Increasing the atmosphere of the game is one of the most important things I think. This is dating me a little bit, but back when College Gameday came to BG people were tailgating like crazy right there in the grass. There were rows and rows of cars there, mostly students. All of this was going on and it was raining and about 45 degrees. My point, really push the tailgating before the game. The problem I always seemed to run across is people would tell me they would drink at their place and then meet me at the game. Well, big surprise they never showed up. If the tailgating atmosphere is really fun more people would be willing to stop by to hang out. Another reason people don't want to show up is that they want to watch their team (usally OSU) on tv. The more tailgaters out at the Doyt=more tv's=more people have a chance to both tailgate and watch their team play. The other thing that will get people out the stadium is a home game versus a team the casual football fan has heard of. Students, and especially the alumni mentioned earlier are not going to arrive in droves to watch BG play Eastern Michigan. Now I understand that we can't affect who is in our Conference, but out of Conference games need to be against teams a little more exciting. Instead of scheduling OSU at the Shoe, bring in maybe Kansas State, Pitt, or some middle tier team. Again, I know this kind of stuff takes a lot of work and there are obvious money issues involved since our stadium even at full attendance is no huge monetary draw, but those are the types of things that need to happen. People just need to be brought out to the Doyt and see that it is cool. There need to be some high school football games there, maybe a rivaly game that is big in Northwest Ohio. When I was in high school had a playoff game in Columbus Crew soccer stadium and it was awesome. Attendance for the Crew soccer team went up the following year because the stadium was a little better known and high school football games are held there annually. I know I don't post on this site often and I am sorry for the long winded writing, but I really feel like these are things that have not really been pushed but at the same time could really work.
