Question about Announcer
Question about Announcer
What was the name of our old announcer? I loved that guy. He had the perfect PA voice I always thought. I am not a big fan of this new guy. His voice bores me

"Old" Announcer
K-Dogg,
The old announcer you referred to was Tom Glick, former Assoc. director of Admissions at BG, and later our NCAA liaison re: rules and regs.
Tom also did the Bball games at AA ...finally retired a couple of yrs. ago... proud to say he was a good friend of mine while I was a HS guidance counselor.

I think the new announcer still needs to work on the football terminology. When the QB is attempting to pass and is tackled in the backfield, it is a sack. Please call it that. All 8 times he said "Stinson the ball carrier and he is tackled behind the line of scrimmage". It is not a running play, it is a pass. He wasn't attempting to run, he was trying to pass. Call a sack a sack. there are other times he does this kind of thing also. I think the guy I was with hit the nail on the head when he called the announcer "sterile". No emotion at all and simply stating in generic terms what happened.

I wish the new announcer would announce the scores of the other games going on as well. The new visual on the score-board is toooooo small to be seen if your at the far end of the field. At the Central Michigan game, the scores of other games were announced constantly, and it made for a more interesting afternoon. ---- Annoucing the scores also brings that informational bit to your attention. One has to remember to look at the scoreboard to catch those scores (otherwise, you'd miss 'em) and that's distracting. Old Is Better!

The new guy may be a bit dry and boring, but at least he has some class. I get sick and tired of these announcers and their whoopla. Also, there is a fine line between a sack and a rushing attempt by the QB so he might not always have the official decision as soon as the play ends. Give the poor guy a chance...he was certainly much better than the last game.
The finest example is that moron who used to do UT basketball. I was at a women's game there once and he was still carrying on after UT made a three point shot when BG had already scored at the other end.
As far as the scores. Don't announce them...we don't need to hear all the OSU fans cheer when ever they are ahead or when Michigan is behind. To fix the size issue, I think eventually they will go to a quicker loop and only show one score...or two...at one time.
What worries me the most is the tint of the orange on the video board. It resembles our old railings way too much!! As Costanza would say..."Pinkish Hue!"

Not sure whether this belongs here, but since this seems to be a thread about mild complaints not related to the team or weather/attendance, I'll comment here.
The announcer still screwed up a couple times when PJ would have a rush and he called him BJ and I believe he once said thanks to "Paul" Sebo at halftime. Also, during the starting lineups, he annouced Ryan Newble as the starter at DE when Crossley's picture was on the videoboard. Now I realize that these are pretty small details and some of the mistakes could have been the fault of others, but with 4 weeks off, I don't think they should have happened.
The team's entrance to the field prior to the game was pitiful also. Before the SEMO game, they showed a nice highlight package with "We Ready" playing. At this game, they just kind of entered the field. I don't think the fight song was even playing (I could be wrong).
Finally, I wish when the videoboard shows the "BG"---> to the west side and "SU" <---- to the east side that we would notice it. I think it would be really cool to get this down, much like "OH"-"IO" at Ohio Stadium to a smaller degree obviously. Overall, I didn't think things were too bad, but I don't care for the new announcer's voice in general.

I wish the announcer would add some enthusiasm to his voice as he announces....talk about monotone. He announces the game like he's doing a public address bulletin or something for AM radio. His announcing sounded more like a reading at a funeral than a football game script. Sorry to be so harsh, but man, I've been to a lot of BCS stadiums and there is excitement in the home PA. We need that too. It's a football game, there's a lot to be excited about, don't put everyone to sleep! Please, spiff it up and get some excitement brewing or find someone else to do it.
GO BG!!!
I understand your point, but when the QB stands in the pocket for three seconds, teammates running patterns on the defensive side of the ball, and a defensive player tackles the QB, it is a sack. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. And that is what happened 8 times Saturday and not once did the words SACK come out of the announcers mouth. That is my point of him needing to brush up on his football cognomen.Redwingtom wrote:The new guy may be a bit dry and boring, but at least he has some class. I am not for all the rah-rah stuff that the announcer could do, but would it hurt to show a little emotion for the home team?
And I noticed too that there was no "staged" entrance for the team. I don't even think the announcer said "And here come your 2004 Bowling Green Falcons!" or anything like that. Maybe the team just screwed up and came out too soon.

Yep, noticed that error also.kdog27 wrote:Did anyone notice that the scores they had up there were wrong too? One time they had OSU winning 14-0. And another time they had BSU playing OSU. These are just the ones I remember

I saw that too. I guess they are still working out the bugs.
One thing I did notice, and I don't want to sound critical of something we just got because it's a million times better than what we had, but our videoboard is very small. It was awesome to see us with one, but I was disappointed at how small it is. Aside from a larger one costing more, I was wondering why we didn't get a larger one since we were getting one in the first placer. That is one of the smallest ones I have seen for football. I also think it sits too far back from the endzone. That may be part of the reason is looks extra small, but I found myself using my binoculars to see the videoboard, especially to read the scores, and I was sitting on the 50 yards line which isn't too far away. It's way better than not having one, but it's certainly on the small side.
I will say, I think the sound-system is much, much better! The music, PA announcements, ads, etc., you can actually hear them now. And I love that Falcon screech!
