I had the opportunity to work/officiate a BG scrimmage this past weekend - here is a qucik update.

First off, the scrimmage at Doyt-Perry Stadium was moved to their indoor practice facitly due to cold and wet conditions at the field. The downside is they ran a lot of 7 on 7 and 9 on 9 drills rather than a traditional game like practice.

When I officate, it's difficult to see the whole field since I look primarily at one player or one area. I did take some notes though and noticed a few stand out players. Overall, I thought the offense was way ahead of the defense.

The young QBs look pretty good and each can run well. I would guess that these guys will 'tuck and duck' a lot more than Omar Jacobs this fall.

The RBs were very solid and quite fast. Dan macon & Chris Bullock did very well and I noted #34 - who is a guy named Curtis VanDemark on the roster, as a big and strong back.

Receivers, #80, Ruben Ruiz, a converted TE, really did a good job as a big slot back. He has to be in the 240-pound range and looks like Tony Gonzalez of the KC Chiefs.

The offense line is really big - I noted #61, a guy named Kevin Mahoney, as a big kid who can pound the defense.

Defensively I did not notice any player who made any big plays, but the speed looked pretty good from the DBs.

Finally, former Colorado coach Gary Barnett was there watching the practice. I guess he hired Gregg Brandon for his first coaching job years ago and they still stay in touch.

Mmm.....interesting. The offense way ahead of the defense? Thats usually the other way around most of the time from what I've heard. Usually its the D that has a handle on the O cuz they have less plays or they are usually better in sync then the O as it take longer for them to gel with all the plays they have to run.

We made Wisconsin's defense look the same way...looked like the spring game and our defense out there!

I'd say we got one more year of struggling with our defense. Not saying I'm not excited for this season, but '07 may be a special team.
