Cayla will have to correct/clarify. But it feels to me as if a lot of them almost just don't know what to do without Brett as their section leader.

That could be just my mistaken impression, though. Of course, classes and methods get in the way, too.
Most of your reasons were correct, but there is more. A majority of the trombones this year did not enjoy the leadership they had this year. Part of that can be attributed to Brett's outstanding leadership. In recent years, the bones had always been a close section because Brett compelled them to be. This year the leadership did not do that....often times the leadership members were the ones not attending section events. That lead to problems and lack of respect for their leadership.
Another reason is that most of the trombones did not enjoy band like they had in years past. I heard them say on many occasions that marching band was not as fun as it used to be. I know a good chunk of them did not like the way Dr. Hayward ran rehearsal, instead preferring the way Ryan Nowlin and Jason Sivill did. Another reason that could be was that they had a small...incident with Dr. Hayward in which she got rather upset at them, said something that no educator whould ever say (however funny it may be), which was one of several events that lead to many of the bones dislike for her.
As far as I know, only Rachel and Nathan are doing methods or student teaching. Several of them can not do it because their schedule is too busy, but most of them just do not want to come back.
