Why draft a QB beyond Cutler,

Look at NFL rosters. All the starters (especially established ones) are either 1st round draft picks for the team that they are with, or have been traded or signed as Free agents or are Tom Brady. So what is the point of drafting a QB beyond round 1? Why draft a guy to spend money on him and time and then let him walk to another team. They dont play special teams, they dont really contribute anywhere else, heck Billy Joe Tolliver didnt even know the playbook. What is the point?

They may hold, but a veteran can do that just as easily and they may run the scout team but a veteran can do that as well.

Simms and Frye are the closest but they both are not settled.

Oftentimes later round QBs are taken by teams that already have an established starter. If that later round pickup looks good in backup duty they can often be traded for a higher pick a couple years down the road. That's certainly one reason to take a later round pick.

Plus they are cheap.

Plus you always need at least 2 QBs as only Favre & Manning are good for the entire season as a general rule.

I understand you need more than one QB, but by the time a later round QB has developed to be worth anything they are usually gone.

I'm sure in Manning's case you mean entire regular season.

it was billy joe hobert not billy joe tolliver by the way, don't mean to sound like a smart a$$ but i lived in buffalo when he came in for todd collins and stunk of the joint so i remember it very well.

Ha, i am always confusing my obscure Billy Joe Journeymen.

As a Bengals fan another person made the point that it is good to drafta guy because you can pay him less. I agree with the rookie minimum point. I did not think of it in terms of cash. What does Doug Johnson make compared to Krenzel compared to CFA?

Johnson 585,000
Krenzel 425,000
CFA 275,000

Thats about 300,000 saved....but you have a worthless player IMO. by the time he can play he will be wearing another jersey.

Doug Johnson is going to be far better and more knowledgeable and better for the locker room as a veteran (I dont know his personality so I am ignoring that, if he is a dik I am mistaken). (ANd I dont think Doug Johnson is good) than any 3rd to 7th rounder who comes in has to learn what it is like to be an NFL QB, a system, how to deal with making hundreds of thousands etc. etc.

I am basically debating with myself because I was thinking, "wouldn't it be great to have a QB like Croyle or Whitehurst to develop as a longtime backup," But i think that is make beleive. I think that having Krenzel and Jamie Martin makes a lot more sense then a QB who will leave and play elsewhere when he develops, if he ever develops. There is no reason for this team to even think about drafting a QB and any team that does not get Cutler, Young or Leinart or that doesnt think Whitehurst or whoever can be there starter soon, should not draft a QB.

I think Omar has a huge upside so maybe he is different than the rest of the pack but i just dont see the reason to draft a QB once Cutler is gone, for any team.
