Draft Thoughts

Post by Rollo83 »

I agree that Omar might be in a great situation in Pittsburgh. He'll have time to develop with a first class organization. Unless there is an injury situation, I don't see him getting significant time as the Steelers QB during the regular season any time soon. He'll have to attract some attention during his limited chances during preseason and in mop-up duty. Sounds like a Matt Schaub situation is the best he can hope for.

Couple of things I noticed as I watched the draft:

1. How bad are the North Carolina State coaches? Three defensive lineman go in the first round, including the #1 overall pick. Yet, they go 3-5 in the ACC and were only the 4th best defense in the league. Are you kidding me?

2. Mike Kudla (weightlifting record holder at the combine) and Josh Huston of the Buckeyes don't get picked. I guess the wholoe team can't get drafted?

3. Omar goes as the 9th QB taken to Pittsburgh. I think the Steelers were the first team to draft a QB as the "best athlete available." The previous 8 QBs taken went to teams that had a stated QB need coming into the draft.

4. I love that Pittsburgh drafted Omar and left hometown hero Brucie on the board! That's the difference between the Steelers and the Browns. I think the Browns reached for local kid Frye last year in the third round. Only time will tell how this plays out. I am not sold on Frye though.

I'm not really sure how you could reach for anybody in the third round, by that round the draft is really a crapshoot anyway.

I think I'm more sold on Frye as an NFL QB than Gradkowski, if you want to play up the local angle. But you're right, time will tell with all of them.

While I was very happy to see Omar finally get drafted, and also before Bruce, the one stat that will always stick out in my mind though when it comes to these two is how Omar and BG was 0-2 against Bruce and UT head-to-head. Both games, BG coulda, woulda, shoulda won, and both times UT/Bruce found a way to guide the Rockets to the victory. And that will always hurt and sting for me. I don't care if Omar goes on to win a couple Super Bowls and if Bruce is bagging groceries for the rest of his life....I like college football a million times better than the NFL, and as a die-hard BG fan, it pains me to know Bruce and UT got the better of Omar and BG.

But best of luck to you Omar, I hope you have a great pro career.

You can call a pick a reach in the third round. Generally speaking, I think you want to get guys who are capable of starting immediately or in a year during the first three rounds. Then you look to fill depth and special teams on 4 through 7.

One no can deny the Steelers of doing a great job and that is picking the talent on the second day of the draft.
i think first over all is way over rateed..why??? your generally talking about the worst teams in the NFL scrambling to find the ONE person who can them from rags to riches...
Each player in the draft is a quality player,,,the only questions are, do we need a and do we hav ethe time to develop a....

Absolutely. Although Frye was most certainly NOT a reach in the 3rd round...many immediate post draft articles called him the steal of the draft. Some predraft rankings had him as a potential pick for GB in the first (before Rodgers fell). I know that at least one publication had him as the #1 QB in the draft.

Whether Frye ever becomes a good QB is up for debate, but he was absolutely NOT a reach in the 3rd round.

My thoughts EXACLTY, 33. I've said it a few times here before. The only reason I watch the NFL is to see how the BG and MAC players are doing. Who wins and who loses doesn't matter to me at all. I WAS a die hard Browns fan until 1995 when the No Franchise Loyalty league allowed them to be ripped outta the North Coast. This killed all interest in the NFL for me...just like Paul Brown's firing killed all interest for my dad. I bought BG season tix for the 1st time in 1996 and haven't looked back.

That said, I still have the sickest feeling in the pit of my stomach because of these last 2 losses to that school up north. It stings beyond anything. That's what helps make a great rivalry. JUST BEAT THAT TEAM!!!!! I HATE the fact that they've taken 2 straight. Sure we still lead the all time series 36-30-4, but they've taken EIGHT of the last ELEVEN. :vom:
We simply must win at the Glass Bowl this year....period. They won on our turf last year so we must return the favor. ;-) And 2004 was worse than last year. We had them on the ropes and let them come back. Last year, we're up 31-24, 8 min left in the game...and UT is facing a 3rd and 8 at their own 30. Get the stop there and we're in great shape. Even Amstutz doesn't go for it on 4th and 8 at his own 30 in that situation. Or would he?
Needless to say UT converted on a (surprise!) pass to a TE. 7 min later they are tying the score and have the momentum. That SUCKED. LOL.

124 days til kickoff....204 til our date in the Glass Bowl.

Of course, asking our defense to do much of anything last year was simply too much.

FF90, tell me more...I like where this story is going! =D>

FWIW, I feel the same way about the NFL. I grew up a huge Dolphins fan but I probably couldn't tell you who more than 3 players on their current team are.
UT is listed in the 2004 edition of The Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges by Trent Anderson and Seppy Basili as one of the U.S. schools with the “Most Beautiful Urban Campus.”

I don't know, they got pretty good at running long distances after getting burned at the line.
