I know very little facts in all of this. Now with that being said I find that is awfully convenient that the stud recruit receives a slap on the wrist and they guy nobody knows about gets booted. Once again I know little, but that just looks bad.

Bingo -- and you know a lot more about the situation than Joe college football fan. I like to be able to chastise the Toledo's, Ohio's and OSU's of the world while still maintaining some semblance of a high ground. Having a drug dealer on the team and not suspending the starting QB (if that's what happens) for a drug violation sure doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy about being a BG fan or alum.

Regardless of the severity of the offense, the buck needs to stop HERE.

Having said that, at least AT hasn't been spending his free time punching horses.

you could work for ESPN...or CNN with that kind of spin.
We had a team last year that played VERY undisciplined football throughout the year. It was especially evident on special teams when our coverage units refused to stay in their lanes and constantly allowed big returns.

As for the leadership, anyone who didn't see a general lack of leadership on that team was blind. They folded like an origami bird the second Omar got hurt, and didn't recover for a couple games. They have consinstently for the past 3 seasons shown the inability to be prepared in big games, especially on the road. They have also failed to make any sort of consistent halftime adjustments.

Yeah, in my humble opinion our coach lacks leadership in a major way. If he lets AT play without any sort of game discipline he's also proving that he's no better than Amstutz in the discipline dept. Coach Brandon may be one helluva X's & O's strategy guy, and he may know football better than Paul Brown, but I don't think he's anything better than mediocre as a leader...and I think that's giving him too much credit.

That's a big assumption.
If AT is playing QB in the game against Wisconsin I will have lost all of what little faith I have in Gregg Brandon. For all of Dakich's issues he at least is willing to discipline his players.
Well coach Brandon wouldn't want you to lose faith in him so I am certain he will now be suspended for the first game. I don't think this warrants a suspension just a lot of running until you vomit. Heck Mr. Discipline Bobby Knight had tokers on his team and did not suspend them.
Tricky,
Can you explain to me then why Patrick was kicked off the team while you argue that Turner should not even be suspended even though the both pleaded guilty to the exact same charge? Does any one else think the punishments (in respect to the football team) is disproportionate for some reason?
I certainly do. I am disappointed with the coaches and the courts. They basically slapped him on the wrist and he is getting away with it with just enough punishment to satisfy the NCAA. He wont learn from it, he will do it again, wether he gets caught or not is a different stroy..

he is probably smoking it again as we speak...very disappointing.

weak disciplinary action, very weak

That's right, I forgot about Patrick lying about the situation.

So that now begs the question, lying to the coach gets you kicked off the team, but pleading guilty to disorderly conduct gets you what???

for real, lying about it gets kicked off the team but you might, might get a one game suspension for pleading guilty? what kind of BS is this? Lying about it should not matter..it doesnt change the fact that he and AT BOTH got caught with it?

I agree with a lHammB, umm warthog and whoever else made the comment about how some of you would flame UT or OSU if they allowed a slap on the wrist if Troy Smith got caught with Pot..but it is OK when AT does it.

Atleast Tressell, kicked his player off the team, revoked his scholly, and did NOT let hiom back on the team.. he has to make his way back. Yea it was trafficking but atleast he gave a deserved punishment..

I'm not saying AT should be suspended for the season but neither should Patrick..I think they both should have gotten 2 games. I dont think 1 is enough and 3 would have been too many.. 2 would make them think about doing it again

How ironic coming from a buckeye apologist. You could say the same thing about the osu athletic program. They continuously cheat and they basically get slapped on the wrist. There is never enough punishment so they continue to cheat.

They're probably cheating as we speak...not surprising.

I don't see any particular significance to suspending AT for a game.

He was charged with a minor misdemeanor. There is literally no lesser crime in Ohio. The penalty is so small on simple pot possession in Ohio that, in some cases, the fact that the cops are taking away the pot can be more expensive than the fine.

I don't think we find out about all the times our players are charged with minor misdemeanors because the police hand out tickets on that order like candy in Bowling Green.

Every weekend, kids can be counted on to take a leak on the Dumpster behind Howards, to order drinks inside a bar even if they aren't yet 21, to express too much disappointment (in a disorderly manner) when cops are breaking up an off campus party.

It should be no surprise that, once in a while, football players get caught up in this.

I don't like this thread because I just don't understand -- and I'm not sure I ever will understand, on a very basic level -- what is making so many of you tick on this.

Why this insistence that AT be made an example of with a suspension?

Is it the belief that no punishment could possibly be appropriate if it isn't something visceral that we can see?

I don't see it that way. I trust any football coach has a selection of effective punishments at his disposal that fall short of something we can see.

Is it the desire to be able to point to a stiff punishment in smackfests with Toledo and Ohio State fans, where for years some of our fans have run them down with the accusation of loosey goosey morals?

Why were some of us laying down that smack in the first place? And what in the world does fear of eating a little crow have to do with what's best for AT and the team?

Is because we fear fans of other schools will call our starting quarterback a pothead?

Who cares what they think? And there isn't a damned thing we can do about it in any case.

Is it the fearsome word "marijuana?"

Once again: It's a minor misdemeanor. This state has been ruled lock, stock and barrel by law-and-order Republicans who, for more than a decade, have never seen a prison sentence they didn't think could be made stiffer. Even they haven't saw fit to change the simple possession penalty.

Perhaps we should reflect on why that is.

The person I admire most in all of this is the city prosecutor, who said he had no idea AT was a football player, and clearly didn't give a rats ass.

I wish more of us could follow that example.

For those of you still fervently searching for moral superiority over Ohio State and Toledo, look at the NCAA major infractions database.

Bowling Green isn't listed. Bowling Green has never committed a major infraction. And nothing discussed in this thread will change that.

The NCAA, quite simply, does not give a rats ass about this.

I think I'm done until the next thread arrives. Hopefully it won't be until Brandon names his starters for the Wisconsin game.

Yes. Yes I do feel it is disproportionate. Patrick should have been allowed to stay on the team, but instead of Ben Gay on the jock, he should have been made to wear a bra, garter and Chanel No. 5 for the first game.
So you are saying that being a woman is a punishment????? What are you from Iowa? :axe:[/quote]

No, I'm just saying wearing Chanel No. 5 over Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamond perfume is a severe punishment.

Its sooo long before the 1st game. Being a teacher I know that if punishment doesnt come right away, it has little to no effect. I'm not sure what the right punishment is, but sitting him for the 1st game of the season is too far off. Maybe make him do some crappy chores or extra work outs, or call the team together and talk about his mistake and apologize, but not bench him for 1 game that is 100+ days away.
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

Well said, SF. As an outsider, I don't know what really goes on inside those walls. And as a dude that used to toke up daily back in the day, I can't pass judgement on AT. Personally, I think pot should be legalized. Alcohol and tobacco cause much more damage to society and yet they're legal. But that's my view.

I trust Coach Brandon and the staff to take the proper action in this matter.

You admire a supposed city leader who doesn't pay any attention to the community? How the hell does anyone in that town with an IQ over 50 not know Anthony Turner? If the general population takes its lead from these people, no wonder there is so much apathy for the athletic programs.

That reminds me of a TV story I saw about the Cowboys "excessive behavior" back in the early 90's. Aikman was mad at Switzer for not punishing players who missed curfew/skipped practice/whatever. Switzer said "What do want me to do, Irvin threw the party - you want me to cut HIM?" Aikman responds "No, but you cut that guy and that guy and that guy (lesser players)" :P

A lady beside me at the spring game was talking to her husband as if AT was not going to play against Wisconsin. She seemed like she was a football parent, so I am assuming that she got this from her son.

As always, you make some very good points Schad. I don't necessarily disagree with all of them, I just see things from a different perspective.

I don't think this is about the substance of the offense. I think it's about symbolism, leadership, and discipline. As Hammb has stated, our team played very undisciplined football last year. I'm not a big Urban fan, but look what happened to BG, Utah, and Florida when he came in and instilled some discipline and character in his players. You saw the direct result on the field. Giving the starting QB, the leader of the football team, no game punishment for a run in with the cops (no matter how small), sets a horrendous example for the rest of the team, the school, and the community.

Bottom line, our starting QB, or any other representative of the University and everything associated with it, should not b e f***ing around with drugs. I don't care if it's pot, cocaine, acid, or friggin' cough syrup. I don't think this conversation has anything to do with the severity of the offense or the assertion that pot isn't really a big deal. I don't know if that assertion holds water, and I really don't care. If Gregg Brandon or Sidney Ribeau were caught with drugs, I'd expect them to receive some kind of public and substantial punishment. It should be no different with AT. He's not a helpless kid. He's a young man that made a choice to accept a much greater responsibility and a decreased level of privacy in return for the opportunity to receive a quality education for free, play the game he hopefully loves, and perhaps prepare himself to make a career out of football.

I think and hope that Brandon will suspend AT for the Wisconsin game. If he doesn't, I'm done with him. My opinion doesn't matter all that much, but that's what it is.
