I think the biggest issue is that Patrick got kicked off anf AT got a slap on the wrist because he may actually be important to the team..its inconsintent. it shows that if your meaningful you will get away with it but if your a nobody in the coaches view your off for good. IT is a bunch of BSSchadenfreude wrote:I don't see any particular significance to suspending AT for a game.
He was charged with a minor misdemeanor. There is literally no lesser crime in Ohio. The penalty is so small on simple pot possession in Ohio that, in some cases, the fact that the cops are taking away the pot can be more expensive than the fine.
I don't think we find out about all the times our players are charged with minor misdemeanors because the police hand out tickets on that order like candy in Bowling Green.
Every weekend, kids can be counted on to take a leak on the Dumpster behind Howards, to order drinks inside a bar even if they aren't yet 21, to express too much disappointment (in a disorderly manner) when cops are breaking up an off campus party.
It should be no surprise that, once in a while, football players get caught up in this.
I don't like this thread because I just don't understand -- and I'm not sure I ever will understand, on a very basic level -- what is making so many of you tick on this.
Why this insistence that AT be made an example of with a suspension?
Is it the belief that no punishment could possibly be appropriate if it isn't something visceral that we can see?
I don't see it that way. I trust any football coach has a selection of effective punishments at his disposal that fall short of something we can see.
Is it the desire to be able to point to a stiff punishment in smackfests with Toledo and Ohio State fans, where for years some of our fans have run them down with the accusation of loosey goosey morals?
Why were some of us laying down that smack in the first place? And what in the world does fear of eating a little crow have to do with what's best for AT and the team?
Is because we fear fans of other schools will call our starting quarterback a pothead?
Who cares what they think? And there isn't a damned thing we can do about it in any case.
Is it the fearsome word "marijuana?"
Once again: It's a minor misdemeanor. This state has been ruled lock, stock and barrel by law-and-order Republicans who, for more than a decade, have never seen a prison sentence they didn't think could be made stiffer. Even they haven't saw fit to change the simple possession penalty.
Perhaps we should reflect on why that is.
The person I admire most in all of this is the city prosecutor, who said he had no idea AT was a football player, and clearly didn't give a rats ass.
I wish more of us could follow that example.
For those of you still fervently searching for moral superiority over Ohio State and Toledo, look at the NCAA major infractions database.
Bowling Green isn't listed. Bowling Green has never committed a major infraction. And nothing discussed in this thread will change that.
The NCAA, quite simply, does not give a rats ass about this.
I think I'm done until the next thread arrives. Hopefully it won't be until Brandon names his starters for the Wisconsin game.
Turner's Court Appearance
I think you might want to grow up a little bit and be a little more realistic. If they cheat every year, or every day and are cheating right now, the NCAA would have them banned from any athletic competition. if your going to argue you should probably not make yourself seem so rediculous.Tricky_Falcon wrote:How ironic coming from a buckeye apologist. You could say the same thing about the osu athletic program. They continuously cheat and they basically get slapped on the wrist. There is never enough punishment so they continue to cheat.tekekini wrote:I certainly do. I am disappointed with the coaches and the courts. They basically slapped him on the wrist and he is getting away with it with just enough punishment to satisfy the NCAA. He wont learn from it, he will do it again, wether he gets caught or not is a different stroy..Warthog wrote:Tricky,Tricky_Falcon wrote:Well coach Brandon wouldn't want you to lose faith in him so I am certain he will now be suspended for the first game. I don't think this warrants a suspension just a lot of running until you vomit. Heck Mr. Discipline Bobby Knight had tokers on his team and did not suspend them.hammb wrote:If AT is playing QB in the game against Wisconsin I will have lost all of what little faith I have in Gregg Brandon. For all of Dakich's issues he at least is willing to discipline his players.1987alum wrote:That's a big assumption.ffejfalcon wrote:Glad this is behind AT now. So what are our chances beating Wisconsin without AT at QB? Assuming Brandon sits him.
Can you explain to me then why Patrick was kicked off the team while you argue that Turner should not even be suspended even though the both pleaded guilty to the exact same charge? Does any one else think the punishments (in respect to the football team) is disproportionate for some reason?
he is probably smoking it again as we speak...very disappointing.
weak disciplinary action, very weak
They're probably cheating as we speak...not surprising.
nobody hear really believes OSU cheats let alone cheats all of the time. BG is no better than OSU in the discipline department. I think OSU has proven to be more disciplinary. They will sit a star player in no time where it is still debatable as to wether or not BG will.
Also, I dont know if I would call a post season ban, final four forfeit, and 3 year probation (all received by the bball team) a "slap on the wrist" not to mention all profits made from the final four run had to be paid back.
the football team would have been punished, if there were anything to punish them for.

Does anyone else find it friggin' hilarious that the four adds on this page since the OSU talk started are:
1.) "Sex Crimes Defense Team"
2.) "Free Ohio State Jresey"
3.) "NotreDameFootballTickets"
4.) "Ohio State Tickets"
Huh?
I am dead serious.

I think you are looking at this wrong. I see it this way and this is only my opinion. AT has been here for about 2 1/2 years and has been great for that whole time. No problems what so ever. Patrick shows up and all of a sudden AT and him get into a problem. Yes, they both committed the same offense, but AT has a history of being a good student and citizen at BG. Patrick has no such history here. Patrick may be removed from the team because he could be considered a cancer and they want to cut off before it even infects the team. While AT having shown he is capable of being a good citizen would remain. Why keep a guy around that right off the bat causes problems. They know AT, they don't know Patrick.tekekini wrote:

This is assuming Patrick got booted, we don't know that for sure. Besides that we don't know what punishment is going to be handed out to AT or what punishment he has already endured. And we may never know. After all, it is now only a minor misdemeanor for disorderly conduct. They were lucky because it could have been worse, but that is all it is. The punishment should fit the crime and not be excessive. If they were found guilty of more then more punishment would be warranted.
AT won't mess up again.

Is Alex Boone going to be suspended for getting a DUI at or near twice the legal limit? I haven't read anything final from Tressel yet in the paper. Unless I missed something, I would say that Tressel has not acted in "no time" with one of his stud o-linemen.tekekini wrote:nobody hear really believes OSU cheats let alone cheats all of the time. Good post Spart43. I pretty much agree with everything you said. There's a lot we don't know that might be going on now, could have already happened, or might happen down the road for both of these guys. I'm sure the appropriate actions have or will be taken to fit the punishment, and for all we know, maybe they have already been implemented, or maybe they are yet to happen. None the less, both guys made a mistake, and it could have been a lot worse. Fortunately, it wasn’t, and I hope it doesn’t happen again. I just can’t wait to see Anthony back on the field so we can hopefully talk about his great on the field performances and not negative off the field issues.Spart43 wrote:I think you are looking at this wrong. GO BG!!!
that was all an assumption. that is an assumption that AT is a good citizen because it is possibly that he was just never caught. he did not decide to smoke marijuana one time for the hell of it. he has more than likely been doing it and will continue to do soBGSU33 wrote:Good post Spart43. MACMAN
I believe that at some point it was brought bare that At told the Coach the truth and in another seperate meeting the other lied.
I tend to belive he got outstead for the lie, as in life a person is only as good as thier word...even in this day and age of contracts and very excessive laws.
the bottom line is this...Believing.
Believe that coach, team and Athletic Department to in to account all of the information( of which we will never know allthe details) and to trust in them that they were fair.
i believe they were fair, and i further believe that if they mistreated players the players would would walk off of a corrupt team. i ahve not seen a steam of cars leaving the Doyt...have you...and agian this all falls on to belief and you can choose to not have faith...it will eat you up, but its your choice.

Cheat: To violate rules deliberately, as in a game
Sooooo, what NCAA rule are we breaking? Even if there is a team rule being broken, that isn't cheating on the football field. Your sense of logic is...odd.
