Ohio's pass defense looks solid
Looking at Ohio's pass defense, the Bobcats have already intercepted 11 passes and are allowing just 182 ypg. Those are some pretty good numbers.
GO BG!!!
Toledo threw for 285 and Miami 268 on them. With that said, I think Omar could easily toss for over 300 on them. As long as he's studied the tapes and their defense and doesn't end up tossing intereceptions, we will be alright. Otherwise, we do have tons of RB's that run on them all day. We will definitely be alright in this game!

I liked the way OU's defense looked in the first half of the UT game - aggressive and swarming to the ball, disrupting plays and hitting hard. The second half they fell apart and were playing on their heels.
The numbers look good, but consider their opponents ...
VMI (a win) has averaged 142 yards passing per game
Pitt (a loss) isn't the Pitt of last year (hello, Larry Fitzgerald?) and is averaging 214 ypg; the Kitties held them under 100 yards.
Miami (a loss) threw for about 268 yards against the Kitties, a shade under their average (278)
Buffalo (a win) has averaged 132 YPG passing. Wow.
Kentucky (their big win) has averaged 168 YPG passing and actually had an above average day (190 yards) against Ohio.
Marshall (a loss) threw for 170 yards, a bit above their 161 yard average.
Toledo (a loss) threw for 285 yards, most of it in the second half, which was below their 310+ yard per game average.
Soooo ... their numbers look good. Their interception total is quite impressive. The Toledo game gave a good window into their team defense - if they're on, they perform like they did in the first half. They dominated Toledo at the point of attack and dirsupted the spRockets game plan. When they get disoriented, they don't have enough athletes to overcome it.
For the record, BG is averaging more than 300 yards per game passing.
The Kitties stopping our aerial assaut ... ?

Without seeing UT's offense this year (oh wait, I saw it LAST year), I can imagine that if you scheme to spread your defense and watch for the bubble screen, UT isn't that tough to stop, if you wrap up on your tackles and as you said "swarm to the ball". If you sit back and let them set up blocks and use their speed, they'll burn ya. That said, while we do use quite a bit of lateral passing, we also open alot up with 8 and 9 yard slants to keep them honest. And as was said a couple posts ago, if they shut down those slants, we'll run PJ and friends up their hind ends. I think as the game wears on, BG will have their way with this team. It won't be 35-0 early in the second quarter, but it won't be in much doubt after that either.1987alum wrote: Soooo ... their numbers look good. Their interception total is quite impressive. BTW, the "finger wag" smilie is top 5 all time!
UT seemed to find the holes during halftime. They ran a little fade-type of pattern with Moore, basically isolating him 1-on-1. When the Kitties decided to fade into deep zones, Brucie toted the rock quite effectively, which really seemed to put their linebackers' heads on a swivel.
The Kitties have a few options:
1) drop 7 or 8 into coverage or a mix of man-zone. Result: Omar and PJ have a track meet
2) Bring the house or a variety of blitz packages, hoping the DBs can cover long enough and/or Omar has trouble finding the correct matchup long enough to disrupt the play. Result: Omar breaks the BG single game passing record.
3) Play aggressive, with a mix of man-zone and modest blitzes and focus on turnovers. This is their best bet, IMO. If they do this effectively and cause and early turnover or two, they can control the game's tempo and build some momentum. I just don't see that happening, though.

Yeah, I like it, too!

I do think, from what little I saw of the UT game and have read, that OU probably has the best defense in the conference.
That said, if they can do what the other OU we played couldn't, more power to them. I'm quite confident in our offense's ability to put points & yards on ANYONE, and I do mean ANYONE in college football.
I'm less confident in our defense's ability to stop teams, luckily Ohio's offense isn't real good. I think that we can dominate these teams with quality defense and no offense. Our best chances for losses are against teams that can also move the ball against us (NIU, OU, UT, MU)

I think OU DOES have the best D in the conf. I said it before, ill say it again. But I think we have the best offense, and will still win by several scores. I dont know why that OU guy came in here flaming, we were giving them credit, just not as much as he wanted I guess.

OU
I think OU's defense is not the concern. OU's defense is VERY oportunistic. They cause turnovers and get after the ball. I do think they looked bad versus UT but, the stats don't tell what happened at Toledo and at Miami. The offense does nothing and I think the defense loses a little bit of spirit after awhile.
This game comes down to the work of the OU offense. The two BIG losses (Miami and UT) were completely on the offense. The defense spent most of the day holding down a 45 yard field while the offense held onto the ball for a long time but did little in the way of yardage.
I don't know the stats but I would imagine that OU's offense averages about 2 yards on first down. It looks good and the scheme is a good one but our boys just can't execute it all the time. We get called for a lot of penalties and give up far too many sacks. If we can't move the ball, it'll be another Miami and/or Toledo game.
I think OU wins...or, keeps it close, if we move the ball. However, I don't think they will and it will cost us in the end.
