Convocation Center
Convocation Center
OK--this should be in the Hoops Forum. but what's done is done.
Well, the Blade reports that the Board of Trustees held their Spring meeting this week and still no news, at least not yet, about the study concerning renovation of Anderson or construction of a Convocation Center.
Here's some speculation.
1-Originally, the study was to be completed by the end of last year. Surely, it has been completed and they are just waiting for an appropriate time to announce the results.
2-I feel that if the study reached negative conclusions, they would have been released quickly. The delay leads me to believe that the conclusions were positive and that some issues, especially financial issues, need to be settled before a public statement is released.
3-Here are some "maybes".
Maybe, after the Board announced a $750 total increase in student fees, they are letting this settle before announcing a Convocation Center project that would involve student funding of some kind.
Maybe they want the fund raising for athletics in the Building Dreams campaign to reach its goal (or come closer) before announcing another fund raising campaign related, at least partially, to athletics. The Sebo Center is nearing its $7 million goal. But the overall goal for athletics is $18 million of which $13 million has been pledged. In the Building Dreams statements I have seen, no specifics have been given about what the additional $11 million beyond the Sebo Center is for.
Maybe a "silent campaign" is already underway for a Convocation Center and they are waiting until some significant headway has been made before announcing the project.
Maybe they are waiting for other kinds of funding, e.g. student financed bonds and/or state funding, to be agreed on.
OK-now here's a couple of questions.
1-Does anyone know anything about decisions/plans that have been made?
Even if specifics can't be revealed, I'd be happy with a " Be patient, good news is coming." answer.
2-As I said, the Building Dreams campaign goal for athletics is $18 million, and this is $11 million more than the $7 million goal for the Sebo Center. Now $11 million is a lot of money. Does anyone know what this is scheduled for?

OK...back to the point at hand.
I do know that quite a bit of the money anticipated for athletics is intended for endowing scholarships. I'm not sure exactly where we are at right now with endowments, but if and when we do get all of our athletic scholarships endowed that will be a huge step forward for the AD and will free up money for other purposes.
But again, I don't know the details at this point. I'm sure an enterprising soul could call the development office to find out if said soul was curious enough. I'm sure that there are at least rough outlines for where the money is intended (but then again, maybe not as allocations are often at the will of the donor...hmmm). Either way, any money coming into the AD for any reason is good for the department overall. Money in one place frees up money in the annual budget that can be used in another place, so don't be discouraged even if allocation categories are not what you had expected/hoped.

Some of the projects included in the money are:
1.new tennis courts to be in the practice golf area
2. a baseball/softball/tennis locker room to be in front of the tennis courts in the same area
3. resurfacing of the track
The initial plans for the locker room project have been available for about a year and I know of at least one major gift toward this project.

Aside from needing a new Convocation Center or a renovated Anderson Arena, it's good to know these other facilities are going to be upgraded too. They certainly need to be as well.factman wrote:Some of the projects included in the money are:

Think of it this way: there probably isn't any ammount of practice that will help your golf game. Just keep drinking.hammb wrote:I still hate that they're taking away that practice area...GRR...

I know I am barking up the wrong tree here, but why is there so much effort put into athletics, when the University Hall trio are about to fall apart. I just dont understand how an academic institution is failing to meet any standards in that area. For that matter South Hall, West Hall, Overman.....they are all turning into shitholes. Effort should be placed there as well....Wrong tree I know, but perhaps there are some others who can acknowledge this fact as well!!!

The entire effort is not going into Atheltics, Athletics is just a small part of the campaign. Athletics is the effort that gets all of the press (after all, how many times have you heard about our lone National Championship this year?)
The state of Ohio (you see where I'm going?) provides money to the university to assist with maintenance of the buildings. We have done some major work in University Hall, Wet Hall, and South Hall in recent years. I cannot speak of Overman Hall because I do not see that side of campus very often.
When a donor gives money to the university, they can pledge it to a specific purpose (i.e Bob Sebo and the Sebo Center) or to the general fund (many of the smaller donations go here and they add up to a nice amount).
And yes, we did win a National Championship this year - in DEBATE!
