call me cynical, but in today's climate of higher education and collegiate funding, i don't see buildings being named for folks without a large injection of cash. that's not to say that folks who make large contributions don't deserve to be recognized, because they certainly do. it is to say that it seems the honor given to an individual by having his or her name associated with a structure has been replaced almost exclusively by bequest.Falcon Fanatic wrote:A lot of talk over the years has happened regarding naming the arena. I have always thought they should name it after Sam Cooper, but with the pool already named after him, doubt if they would do that.

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

At a public skate session this past season I noticed a subtlty that is pretty cool- on the redline there were outlines of falcon heads all along the redline- some places have zig zags or white squares but there was the white silouhette of the falcon head all up and down the red line.
I thought that was pretty cool and a neat design element.

all bowling green
And I thought that I had noticed years ago that the "blue lines" were really brown and the "red lines" were close to orange... at least that's how it looked through my eyes...Dayons_Den wrote:At a public skate session this past season I noticed a subtlty that is pretty cool- on the redline there were outlines of falcon heads all along the redline- some places have zig zags or white squares but there was the white silouhette of the falcon head all up and down the red line.

That was due to the very dim lighting. It looks alot better with the updated lighting.TG1996 wrote:And I thought that I had noticed years ago that the "blue lines" were really brown and the "red lines" were close to orange... at least that's how it looked through my eyes...Dayons_Den wrote:At a public skate session this past season I noticed a subtlty that is pretty cool- on the redline there were outlines of falcon heads all along the redline- some places have zig zags or white squares but there was the white silouhette of the falcon head all up and down the red line.

They have had those little Falcon heads on the red line for quite awhile now. I thought it was really neat when I first noticed it too!!Dayons_Den wrote:At a public skate session this past season I noticed a subtlty that is pretty cool- on the redline there were outlines of falcon heads all along the redline- some places have zig zags or white squares but there was the white silouhette of the falcon head all up and down the red line.

How about the "Rob Blake Falcons Arena"
Rob is doing a great job tonight for Colorado vs the Mighty Ducks. Rob scored the 3rd goal to go to OT.
If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back now and then to make sure it's still there.

It is great to see that new boards are going to go in. It will be much better for the sake of players. Perhaps they will increase the height of the glass on the sides. Since graduating, I have sat on the south side below the portal's and considering how close you are, you better be watching the game at all times or you are liable to end up like Britany Cecil.* If they don't increase the height of the glass, perhaps some netting might protect the fans. Of course it would mean less souvenirs for the fans, but it would prevent someone from being severily injured.
The lighting this past season was much improved, but still a long way to go. the low ceiling doesn't help, but it also creates noise that you don't hear at the Schott or a lot of other arenas.
While the Arena needs a number of other upgrades, I think a few basic ones that attract the fans and the recruits will do.
As for a name, no one has mentioned Jack Vivian, the father of Varsity Hockey at BG. If not for him, and former president Jerome, there wouldn't be Varsity Hockey. Vivian was the one that pointed out the best chance for BG to win a National title in any sport was in hockey. And that was in the late 1960's.
*Sorry of the Cecil mention, but she is buried about 20 feet from my grandparents. I wasn't at the CBJ-Calgary game where she was hit, but I am a season ticket holder and I work for a sister company of the Jackets, so I sometime feel like I have blood on my hands.

Ahhh.. I *knew* there was another name we were missing... Jerome and Cooper have their names on buildings.. unless Jerry York is out of hockey when the new arena is finished, I vote for Vivian. Even then, it could be "York Rink at Jack Vivian Arena".cbjhack wrote:As for a name, no one has mentioned Jack Vivian, the father of Varsity Hockey at BG. Of course, as was mentioned earlier, the corporate side of things may win regardless.

Believe it or not the glass used to be a lot lower than it is now and people complained when the "new" glass was put it. As students we used to be able to hang over the glass and celebrate with the players. They raised it a good 2+ feet when they enclosed the north end.cbjhack wrote:It is great to see that new boards are going to go in. It will be much better for the sake of players. If they put up netting I hope it's good stuff. I've been in arenas that have crappy stuff all the way around and it's a pain in the ass to watch a game through.

Yeah, I want their opinion weighted heavily.

Read in the Columbus Dispatch a while ago that a very ritzy Columbus area high school received a telephone call from an East Coast institution that was letting them know they found a blog for one of their applicants and based upon what the student was claiming to do, they were revoking the offer of admission and wanted to let the high school guidance office know why.
