My $0.02 worth.
New boards and glass will be a MAJOR improvement from every possible prospective; fans and players both benefit...and I don't care if we decided to do it on our own, or if we were forced to do it...I'm just glad it's being done.
You can paint whatever you want on the ice; falcon heads (old or new style), block "O's" or gigantic blown up action photos of Rob Blake, Scott Hamilton and Jessica Simpson...or even Homer Simpson, it just doesn't matter. If the team that plays on that ice is competitive and plays with spirit and intensity, the fans will be there...if they don't...well...
I've always thought the building needed a name, but as mentioned before most of the likely candidates already have buildings named for them (Jerome and Cooper). I don't think it would be proper to name it for York while he's still active as a coach, Vivian and Mason have spent most of their respective careers building (or rebuilding) competing programs within our conference. How 'bout "Class of 1984 Arena"?
Whoever suggested changing to Olympic Ice needs to check back in to the real world. That expansion would be a lot more extensive (end expensive)than just removing a couple of rows of seats on each side. Since the coils and underlying structure that make the ice are all connected in a continuous series, the entire system would have to be replaced. Plus (I'm guessing) that tearing out three or four rows of seats on each side would cripple the strutural integrity of the entire building. The roof is supported by the side walls, the side walls are supported by the side grandstands... remove 7-1/2 feet from the base of each of these supports and the whole building falls in on itself. I'm not a strutural engineer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express recently.
