If they restricted the option to students who hadn't previously transferred once already, I don't think it would be such a bad thing. It would reward students who did their work in the classroom during their undergrad years, as opposed to the malcontents who transfer because the coach is too mean.

What if the student wants to study a certain graduate program for which his undergrad school was weak, or didn't even offer that program? The student would have to choose between a) staying at his/her current school and taking random classes his/her 5th year or b) moving onto the graduate program he/she wants but not be able to play his/her last year.

Yes, this may hurt some schools, but it would reward "serious" students.

graduate school applicant pools, while smaller, are "deeper," especially at major universities. maybe i'm a bit naive, i don't see many top flite college athletes excelling on the gre, gmat, etc. in order to gain admission to one of these programs just for another year of basketball.

Often times, the real screener for graduate school is getting funding. Lots of time, athletes take graduate classes when they graduate.

This would explain Steven Wright heading down south to play ball in Kentucky.

Someone said he graduated (or will be an August grad).

Guys that are academically borderline freshmen will rarely want to grad school (even if they graduate), let alone have ambitions to do so. Many of these guys will be doing just what it takes to catch up and stay qualified. This rule will affect a very small number of people. Nevertheless, it is in pricnipal pointless and idiotic. The school that takes a chance on a kid deserves better. Grad school will always be there for the rare kid either way.
