I remember 4 years ago when i was a freshmen coming from buffalo, ny(where high school hockey is bigger than football), it totally blew my mind that kids were going home on the weekends to watch the high school football game instead of stayin in bg for the BG football game.
It's cultural.
I lived in Utica and Rochester over the course of seven years and high school football just isn't taken as seriously. I've got a lot of theories on that. I think the strength of hockey is part of it. So is the long-standing tradition of lacrosse, which peels off athletes who -- in Ohio -- would be trying to fit into the football team.

I'm much more insulted by Bowling Green kids staying in the dorms to watch the Buckeyes than I am kids who go home to watch their high school team play. This is Ohio, and high school football is important.
Schad,
I'm surprised that you would say that Lacrosse kids would HURT football. Notwithstanding the old Jim Brown story, many "lax" kids not only play, but star at football as well. Since Lacrosse is a Spring sport, there shouldn't be any problems trying to "fit into the football team".

And before I forget....Go Amerks! That's old time hockey...the kind Eddie Shore, andd Don Cherry and John Bednarski used to play.

Geneva, NY born and raised. GHS '03. Good to see more Section V alums. Other than Whitmore and Mack, who are some other Section V alums that were athletes at BG, if any? And yes, I concurr wholeheartadly with go Amerks! For those who haven't been back to NY in the last few years to the "new" War Memorial (aka Blue Cross Arena), it's great! 11,000 seats and feels like a brand new arena but still has the old War-Memorial feel. The Sabres even play a regular season game or two there during the year, in addition to an exhibition or two.

You know? That's a good point.

All I know is that there aren't many upstate New York kids playing in Division I-A.

Oh yeah, thanks for opening up that old wound. But when you get a "46" on your first College Alegebra test delivered back to you, you kind of have to reprioritize why your at school...needless to say I had a very brief career as a walk on...besides with 2 other freshman on full rides (you all know Gehad Y. right?) it wasn't like I was going to ever sniff the playing field.
And that's the reason why I will never wear/ order one of them brown jerseys that your aall so keen on...I simply had the chance to wear one at one time and not only screwed up the opportunity I drove it into the ditch in flames.

I didn't know any of that Johnny (and, yes, I've heard of Gehad, who still has some places to call his own in the record book, I think).

Obviously, I don't mean to insult your heritage. I tend to think there is something about upstate New York that isn't yielding talent the way Ohio does -- but it may be that the culture up there leads decent athletes who could cut it in the MAC to places like Colgate, Cornell, etc.

Anyway, this is almost totally unrelated, but: I played high school football with a guy named Jay Jacobs. Good guy -- his parents ran the corner store across the street from the high school.

Anyway, I only learned after we graduated, when I saw the yearbook, that his real name was Jihad Jacobs.

He didn't play college ball, but that would have been a wicked cool name -- almost Mercury Morris cool. :)

Schade,

No offense taken....and let's face it, if we weren't at work this morning we'd probably be cracking open a couple of Genny's, turning up some Foreigner before we head over to Nick T's for a garbage plate :-)

Or we could give the folks at AZZ.com a tour of the Pittsford Wegman's, buy some some white hots, head on up to Webster to tee pee Lou Gramm's house, then head over to the HOG to buy Metallica's first album before finishing off the day at that place at the end of Route 590 (isn't it called Marge's?)

I really wanted a garbage plate last night. Nick Tahoe's was great. I miss that.

House of Guitars...man I miss that place. Did you ever notice that every employee knows exactly where everything is

Not sure about what is at the end of 590...I was thinking more of a Chalotte beach...but then most of Azz would want to go fire up the grill over at Holleder Stadium (site of a 29-8 McQuaid arse whopping of Aquinas back in '80), although I am not sure the place is still standing.

Is anyone thinking of going to the away game down in Miami? I just got a postcard for the fall events...it got me thinking about road trips.

And thank goodness, because if they didn't, nothing would ever get sold, for it is impossible for customers to find anything in there. :)

If the Miami game is in November, I may go.

We will have a LARGE contingent going to the FIU game. Of course, it is only a 2 1/2 hour drive for us! It would be GREAT to have a big tailgate party with BGSU fans before that game. I'd be happy to coordinate it if we can get something going!
