Hey Guys..Long Time...But Wanted Your Thoughts
Wanted to get your input on a matter that got a short discussion on our board today. Seems like a new rule that could really negatively impact conferences like the MAC.

I could give two bleeps about the ethics of the whole thing at this point. Until the players earn salaries consistent with the money they bring in for the school, that ship won't sail. All I care about at this point is that this rule would eventually screw us. Hard.
Roll Along!
On the bright side, it could help us. Think of a four year back up with tremendous potential that has a strong arm, but has been beaten out by someone that is perceived as a better playmaker. Or someone that comes in with the "starter" tag placed on them and then after starting their first two years is benched in favor of another hot freshmen. Instead of transfering they bide their time as a back-up. The school they play at is OSU or UM. They still have a desire to play and think that if they go to a school where they can actually see playing time, they might get the eyes of the NFL on them. Take Scott MacMullan (sp) who backed up Krenzel at OSU. Scotty Mac was a fine player in high school and was the back-up to Bellisari at OSU (while Krenzel was the third string QB). After getting beaten out by Krenzel, Scotty Mac bided his time, graduated on or near time and still got a National Championship Ring. Despite not playing much in college, he was picked up in the Arena Football League, but was consistantly beat out by players with more college experience. A player of his callibur who knows that he won't play his senior or fifth-year could get their undergraduate degree, then transfer to BG and get their Masters. BG has a number of fine Masters programs in Business, Education, and the Sciences.
Sure, with Josh Harris in the picture he wouldn't have gotten much PT unless the coaches felt that Scotty Mac was a better player. If you don't want to use Scotty Mac as an example, then use Justin Zwick, who was heralded as one that would steal the starters job from Krenzel and others. Instead, Zwick is sitting on the sidelines in his fifth year of school wondering what happened. Under this legislation, he could transfer to BG and be the starter to replace Omar. Then we wouldn't have to worry about an inexperienced QB playing in big games, would we?

Yes, we would have a Big 10 reject who has no experience with our system.cbjhack wrote:Then we wouldn't have to worry about an inexperienced QB playing in big games, would we?
Not what I want for my QB. I remember all of those who were concerned about Omar replacing Josh (and I think he did pretty good). Let's give Freddie Barnes his shot before you start panicking.

MACMAN
You can not hold them back they have a right to go where ever they choose.
Its gona impact the MAC anyway...WE GET TO PLAY THE # 7 school from the big ten once a decade in a bowl game....lol
The students have the right to choose where they go after graduation and if that means they can play for another school that is good. Will it be abused....dont see how that is posible, these student are free thinkers and earning educations, if they want to go to another school they should not be held back or forced to quit the game they love.

Its a dumb rule. If you are going to graduate school you should be a graduate student and not an athlete. You have your time as an Undergrad to play sports. Graduate school is for serious academinc and professional training. In fact most programs will not allow you do have an outside job (specifically science departments, where you are expected to be doing 40+Hrs of research a week). I don't see how any school would admit a student into a graduate program and let him play football. Taking graduate level classes while at your undergrad school (and not yet graduated) is one thing, but once you have a B.S./B.A. you should be done with NCAA sports.

I agree with what you say, PGY, but remember Bowling Green State University's all-time leading scorer in basketball was taking graduate classes at the time he passed Butch.

You either have a very high opinion of graduate schools or very low expectations of student-athletes. What is the difference between someone who works full-time and a student-athlete in terms of going to graduate school?PGY Tiercel wrote:Its a dumb rule. Does anyone know if this rule applies only to football or to all NCAA sports?

Right, but was he just taking graduate classes, or was he enrolled in a graduate, degree seeking program, already having recieved and Undergrad degree. There is a big difference in my opinion. Its not a problem to enroll in some Master level courses while finishing up a BS. In fact if that student really wanted to go on to a grad program it would probably help them. However once if you want to get your BS and move on to graduate school (pretty much indicating that you don't want a career in whatever sport) then you need to give up sports at the varsity level.Dayons_Den wrote:
