It's simply my personality wouldn't have worked with adminstrators and parents.

Be proud to be an educator....I am!!! Just finished up my 25th year and have no plans on leaving the profession any time soon (that and having kids heading toward college...$$$$).

One of my favorite quotes: "In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something else." (Lee Iacocca)
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

You clearly have never had a parent chew you out. I don't care if you roll with Hulk Hogan; you're wrong and they're right.

I did have the president of the band backers tell the entire group that me and the band president were alcoholics and drug addicts and that we corrupted her sweet young child. Luckily the entire group knows that the lady is insane and is also the same person who accused my sister of being annorexic :?

And that is why working customer service at Meijer is a great job to prepare future teachers for their actual career. I've heard many complaints this summer working there, and in a year, I'll have a classroom of my own to once again enjoy these wonderful conversations with people who clearly know more than I do.

I once had a mother make her kids complain to the principal that I made "inappropriate comments" when I did no such thing. I found out later that the mom was behind it. I couldn't sue (I tried) because the accused has the right not to be identified, so I wasn't supposed to know who said it. They are supposed to have no reprocussions for making an accusation, which seems like a good idea unless someone uses the system to abuse a teacher. When she was one of three people to run for three spots on the school board, I turned in my resignation very soon after.

The education system is fundamentally crap. I am very much for vouchers and competition in education. My union helped me a lot, but I came up with an incredible flexible schedule which was (I think) really creative. I naively presented it. My idea solved all the issues we had set out to reduce. SOLVED. My administrators liked it, but my union said "no," gave me no reason, and even though it would have eliminated no positions, but streamlined operations, they wouldn't budge.

Post-secondary option is something most people love, but parents had to fight against the establishment just to get it, now it is becoming common everywhere. The funding system is backwards; millions of dollars is spent on special needs kids, but they only typically only service extreme low end and ignore the extremely gifted. Don't even get me started on Ohio's educational funding system and our 'leaders' in Columbus.

The only thing that can guarantee your child a good education is good teachers. There are minimums teachers need, and even the best ones can be sabotaged by incompetent administration. It really begins and ends with the teacher. A bad teacher makes good education impossible. A good teacher can overcome many obstacles.

I don't fell like I was that good of a teacher, and the extra BS I had to put up with wasn't worth it.

Hmm....Let me re-phrase that - I was a good teacher. I was a leader, very good conductor, and my students learned, but it didn't matter. I needed a secretary to do all the other crap I needed to do, and with my brain not working normally for so long with Depression and/or ADD (I still am not sure WTF is wrong), I couldn't hack the other crap.

I spent so much time working on the schedule idea I mentioned before. I was part of a committee, we all worked for a long time and it was for nothing because of red tape. I was on something like 4 committees for nothing that year.

Meetings for the sake of having meetings...wasting time on non-teaching BS....I am not going to miss it at all.

I was happy teaching for about 3 years. There is no way I personally would last another 24 years to get retirement. 20 percent of new public school teachers leave the profession by the end of the first year, and almost half leave within five years.

I took a pay cut to go into teaching...I took a pay cut to get my own band. I had to have a levy pass twice to save my job because I was new.

I also hated getting up at 5am to go to work. I like the tonight show too much.

I don't mean to sound bitter, I am not THAT disenfranchised with teaching, but it wasn't right for me. My situation was uniquely horrible.

My best principal said "it is your job to take it." He was right. all you can do is sit there and take it when a parent goes nuts. you can't react, you can't say anything. You have to remain professional.

It made it easier to handle after hearing that.

Been there. During student teaching alone, I was called an incompetent bitch by one guy AND had a parent secretly call the University to demand I be removed from the program. Interrogating the other kids in the classes proved that all claims were BS and I passed with flying colors. I turned one of them into a "teachable moment" and it turned out pretty well. The kid was passing (PASSING!) when I left and his behavior got better. He even nominated me for staff member of the month. However, I chose my words very carefully from that point out, should mom decide I looked at her kid funny. I had a very interesting student teaching experience.

all this teacher talk makes me think again. I was thinking about going planned program and not getting licensed to teach. not sure if teaching is actually what I want to do. i'm goin on my 5th year so i'm not changing my major again. i will get a BS in education. But i really don't have a clue what I would want to do if i don't teach and what can i do with just a BS in education.

those have been good stories, thanks for sharing! makes me wonder about things and if i really do want to spend 30+yrs teaching..

The guy that trained me had nothing but a BS in ed. He got an IT job out of school and has been in the field for 15 years. Not having a workable minor complicates things, but it's still possible to do something else if you can find the right situation.
