I would say Purdue's budget is in the 60-75 Mil range. Ohio State's is around $120 MILLION.

This is the biggest news in Bowling Green Athletics in quite some time. I'm surprised that a.) this thread is not much, much longer, and b.) that this is the only thread about it.

I'm just sayin'...

Something is nagging me inside that Greg Christopher is gonna take the BG athletic department to heights never envisioned...I love his resume and the fact he's only 40. Here's a guy that can do some BiG things in 5-10 years and punch his ticket to the BCS school of his choice, if he wishes. Throw in the fact he's a native of Indiana and a MAC graduate? \:D/

I'm looking forward to meeting Greg and watching him rock and roll.

I'm hoping he brings the same enthusiasm and success to BG! Maybe then we won't have to rehash discussion on the state of the Ice Arena and Anderson Arena anymore.....

It is most likely not longer, because I doubt he will stick around very long. a few more growth items for his rez and hes packing...
Seriously if hes "that" good we wont be able to afford to keep him. My bet is he gets the dough for a new arena...b-ball or Hockey (I pray) and hes gone like the wind.

I could care less if he stays more than a few years. Our biggest need as a program right now is fund raising for facility improvement and this guy seems to be awesome in that regard. If he can raise some scratch for the new basketball thingamabob, I may overlook that creepy two-first-name thing he has going on.

Welcome to BG Mr. Christopher. Bring it home.

As far as why this thread isn't longer: It's tough to know what to say.

This is the biggest hire since we hired Krebs, obviously. But many of us don't have the tools to evaluate whether or not Dr. Ribeau hit this one out of the ballpark.

It does look like a good resume. The fundraising track record at Purdue really is impressive.

I don't think now is the time to worry about how long this guy will stay.

He arrives at a athletic department that is in a pretty good position. It has a lot of good people -- people who seem to like each other -- and our progrems are in decent shape right now.

What he needs to do is move the ball forward and put us in position to maintain this level success -- and build upon it -- for the long term by getting some faciliites done.

If he does this, he can write his ticket and we will be an even more attractive opportunity for the next person.

We shouldn't sell ourselves short with worry about how long people will stay.

There are intangibles to Bowling Green that don't fit in a brochure and can't be detected by national sports writers. Bowling Green is a community of nice people. People who interview here and sense that want to be here -- and if they can sense it, chances are we want them to be here, because that reinforces the community we have.

I know that last paragraph seems rather Zen, but I mean it, and I think a lot of you know what I mean.

Yep, the first time I set foot on campus, the place just felt like home. The atmosphere is pretty laid back (even when school is in session) and you run accross an amazingly small number of jerks....even in the more "townie" oriented places.

Krebs, Meyer and (temporarily) Dakich have shown that success at BGSU can translate into larger opportunities. As a result, we're going to draw interest from talented people on the way up the ladder. Greg Christopher certainly seems to fit that description.

Congratulations to Mr. Christopher on getting the AD position. I do not intend this to be bad comments about him in any way. But here is why I am apprehensive about this.

We have put such a HUGE focus on the fund raising issue, I am not sure we paid attention to the entire requirements of the position. Reading over the job posting, I was wondering if the athletic department was being converted to a branch of the Red Cross. And whenever Dr. Ribeau or University officials spoke of the positon, fund raising was the focus. Not about building programs (football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, etc) that have the chance to compete for MAC titles year in and year out. IMO, the more successful a program is, the easier it is to raise funds. So the two go hand in hand.

Again, this is not meant to slight Mr. Christopher whatsoever. Given what the powers that be set out to hire, he looks like a great choice. I just hope we didn't focus too much of the probverbial tree and didn't notice the forest around us. :?

Successful fundraising and winning in the high profile, revenue sports frequently go hand in hand.

It's debatable as to what comes first in the cycle. Winning in football begat the Sebo Center, which in theory will lead to improved football recruiting and additional victories.

It's in Greg Christopher's best interest as an AD and a fundraiser to have strong, consistently winning programs, especially in the revenue sports. The money raised will go towards additional facilities which will enhance the programs even more. Of course, talented development people find a way to bring in the dough regardless of the circumstances. Christopher comes from a situation with a large and wealthy alumni base but only moderately successful revenue sports to bolster the cause.

Hopefully some locals can get to the supposed 3:00 official press conference today and provide a report. SID offices for the most recent MAC AD hires have provided press conference transcripts, video links and reaction from Rick Chryst, the search principals and past coaches the person has worked with.

So far, we've got a couple sentences from Ribeau and Christopher and two quotes from Purdue people. Hopefully the press conference provides more insight.

Well, the threads not longer because its easier to speculate and ruminate on why we didn't go for it on fourth down the in third quarter of some game than it is to try and figure out whether this guy can do the job or not.

It doesn't mean people don't think its important.

My take is that I like what I see. But, by definition, we have a guy we have picked up on his "upside." Another approach would have been to go and get a guy who had been a successful AD at a smaller school, etc. In that case, you'd have questions--just different ones.

As for "learning more" in the press conference, I wouldn't count on it. Everything will be optimism and excitement. Like everything else in life, it will be results that matter. Can this guy run a MAC athletic department and bring us success on the field consistent with the way we all believe BG should do things?

We're going to find out.

Amen, Flip. That's how I felt as well. BGSU may not be the prettiest University setting (ala OU and Miami) but you will not find better people on any campus in America. I made more lifelong friends at BGSU than I did in 4 years of high school...and Dover is a pretty close knit town. There's something very special about BGSU...the people. And you can't put a price tag on that.

Of course, my parents are both BG grads and my older sister, Brenda, was a Freshman in 1983 when I got my first look at BGSU. It just seemed like the coolest place. Had my younger sister, Beth, not transferred to Kent State after her Freshman year at BGSU, we would have been 5 for 5. She was thrown out of the family for doing such a despicable thing.
