I was with ya until the last sentence, Zom.

I'm sure the family of Maggie Dixon will beg to differ about the worst sports story of the last two months, much less the year/decade. :( Stretch it that far and there are many more worse stories, I'm sure.

Well, OK, TG, I'll concede that one. Just trying to wrap up for Brazil & Croatia. This one should be a cracker!

Mmm, the kind of picture you see in a magazine where the winning caption wins $20,000. I won't be drawn on that one - too risky.

I heard about this yesterday at work....at Meijer in Findlay. I asked a customer how she was and she said, "I'm mad at Ben Roethlisberger." Me: "Why?" She then told me the story to which I was shocked. I've seen first hand the importance of wearing helmets on bicycles, so to me, wearing one on a motorcycle should be done every single time. I'm glad to hear that he is okay. The customer, although disappointed and quite frankly irate with Ben, said that it was a shame because he was being stupid but his stepmother is so nice.

According to my dad, this story has an ironic turn of events. He heard that Ben's stepmother Brenda was on her way at the time to shoot a commercial for the Chunky soup that other NFL players with their mothers have done. So she was one her way, but it's unfortunate that it was under these circumstances and that the commercial shoot will be delayed, if not cancelled.

I also feel bad for Ben's dad right now. In an article in the Findlay Courier, it said that Ben's mom Ida had died in a car accident when Ben was 8. It would be hard to deal with this accident after already losing one family member in a similar fashion.

The latest update is that he's now in fair condition, expected to remain hospitalized for 3-5 days. He has a mild concusion, fractured both upper and lower jaw bones, broke his nose, has several lacerations to his head, lost 2 teeth, and has chipped many more teeth.

He lost two teeth? Lose 30 more and he can move to West Virginia.

2 of the three saddest cases I had in my years as a claims adjuster involved motorcylces. I had to deal with the parents of an 18 year-old who was killed (maybe) racing his buddy on a moonless night on some godforsaken country road out by Fremont and I had a case similar to Ben's where a helmetless rider in his 20's had a car turn in front of him. He shot over the car and hit the curb head first. He spent several months in the hospital in Greensprings learning how to feed himself again.

You won't catch me on a motorcylce...too many dumbasses ride them and too many dumbasses don't see them in traffic.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I hate Ben Roethlesberger. I hate him with a passion. I will never be able to forgive him for what he did to our Falcons in 2003. The fact that he plays for the Steelers, although it is pretty tertiary to me, doesn't help.

That being said, I really, really hope that he is able to make a quick and speedy recovery. I also hope that he will learn a lesson from this and conduct himself more maturely in the future. Unfortunately, I think we all need a catastrophe from time to time to teach us as we grow. Sadly for Ben, this one really hurt, in more ways than one.

Actually, over at www.miamihawktalk.com they have a "get well" thread going that is going to be sent to Ben in the hospital on Friday. I've been contemplating adding to it for a couple of days, but I think I will now. I encourage anyone else here who feels so inclined to do so as well.

There is a similar thread going on over at the steelers scout.com board. There has been a huge outpouring of support for Ben throughout the Pittsburgh community, and throughout the very widespread Steeler fan population. However, in a lot of cases, it has been oddly mixed with wonderment/anger/confusion as to the decision that led to the accident, along with legal licensing information that is still being investigated.

Live and learn Ben.

I have many thoughts on this whole thing, but only two really worth mentioning, as the others have, for the most part, already been stated.

1.) Winslow's was a "fluke" in the eyes of the owners. Ben's will (or at least should) be an eye-opener. I think we'll begin to see some clauses in contracts now.

2.) I wonder how the driver of the car feels right now, knowing the entire city of Pittsburgh has it out for him/her.

The MHT thread has been a great deal more civil than that. Just another reason why I like collegiate sports more than pro! :P

Grant,
It's true, according to what I read in the PD....his "temporary" license expired in March...obviously, never got it renewed or took final test.

Heard that yesterday afternoon.

For a guy with a degree from Miami, he sure acts like it's from Marshall.
